Great to hear your stories and explanations. They bring me back to when I was a kid--nearly all American kids summertime was baseball time. When the family was piled into the car for some outing, I'd always look at the roadside lawns and fields, imagining if a baseball field could be put in there. Ted Williams was my idol... anyway, I sort of got other interests in my teenage years and after, but your talks have got my back into baseball and learning about the game that were never really talked about in Little League and Am Legion league. Thanks for the great talks.
Was there noticeable confidence issues for those that would play in the MLB and then get sent down, especially those bubble players that would go back and forth? Also was there a time that you questioned your ability to play at the pro level when playing AAA?
In club level as a catcher. I cut the elastic out and rolled my pants down. I hated them up. And I didn't wear club Sox. I had ankle Sox as it's to hot in Australia for long Sox's in catchers gear. But you do mess your legs up knee bent slides. But I liked head first unless I was steeling 3rd so I could hook slide (pop up) hoping for a over throw.
just subscribed to your channel...love the material. Big Yankees fan so loved hearing about their rules! Any organization you enjoyed playing for most?
When I was with the Marlins, in rookie ball you had to be clean shaved and curfew was 11 every night at the team hotel. The levels above though you could do anything.
The idea for making your player wear them up or down is seeing how a prospect will listen, also will they put the team above themselves. Kind of a silly thing on showing shock or not but we do the same thing in the military. We got showed one way to fold our cloths in boot camp. When they check your bunk if it’s not folded like that, you get shit until you correct it. I follow the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp here. They don’t have a rule about socks, would be surprised if that doesn’t change with Jeter ruining the Marlins. Great video!
The insights you provide are interesting to me even though I am not a team sports type of person, though I did study some spirts medicine in a program at Wake Forest/Bowman-Gray. So my enjoyment from sports comes from either actually playing individual sports such as tennis, swimming, golf, track, bowling or being on the sidelines with players during games. But watching sports? Never been to a professional game of anything except sumo here in Japan. BUT your insights are cool. So, could you maybe do a clip commenting your career in baseball as to whether or not it was what would be considered ‘typical’ for those talented players that actually make it to MLB as you did?
you seem like a great guy matt i have had the dis pleasure of meeting and hanging out with a few pro athletes that played with guys i played with either in college or high school and a few wer ego maniac jerks ben roethlisberger married 2 friends of mine sister that i playd with in travel ball... he was one of the biggest jerks. iv ever met he didnt tip the bartender and was rude to all of us during the whole golf outing and no one was being a fan boy or anything we just treated him like one of our team and he was a jerk!!! you seem like a down to earth guy thanks for that
What’s up Matt?! Just found your channel a few days ago and you got me hooked! Very cool and insightful, got the wife into it too lol. Love the new intro too dude, keep up the great work!
Thanks!!! I'm glad she enjoys also! My wife makes fun of me for my videos lol. Trying to get her to come on a video with me! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Lol your story about the Yankees shaving rule and you not knowing how to shave and bleeding and everything reminds me of when I was in boot camp and seeing guys do the same thing. Seeing the instructors react to that was hysterical. I hope the Yankees guys had more mercy on you lol
moedanglez I think it would be funny if his wife came on for a sec to tell the story. You know her version would be funny as hell! Of course he may get shit for not knowing if they were engaged or not at that time. Lol
Thanks for your videos Mr. Antonelli they are very informative. What do MLB players use for a slump buster? I've asked this before but wondering if you could answer it in the best way possible.
I always have a hard time remembered what the unwritten rules are lol. I feel like I know them all, but don't know if they are unwritten or not haha! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I really like your videos, great channel and super interesting. You have a very patient, clear and direct approach. So yeah, thanks so much. I have a question. A lot of times batters look super bored while at the plate. Bored like they'd rather be anywhere else other than right there. Obviously they're not, they're top level pro baseball players but what are they thinking when they're standing there, waiting for the pitch? Thanks much!
Thanks!!!! Most looked bored because they are trying to stay calm and slow the game down. It's almost like the opposite of football. Need to be calm and relaxed, yet focused and ready to attack. It's an interesting dynamic. Thanks for watching and commenting!
“Look good, feel good, play good” is definitely a real thing. I hated my face mask my freshman year in college football and it absolutely affected me on the field. It shouldn’t have but it did.
Hey man! I don't know how I ended up on your channel, but I am glad I did. It's really nice to hear your insight on a variety of topics. Truth be told I am not a baseball fan, at all. But somehow I find this very interesting. So kudos on making it interesting. I'd like to offer an idea, that would help someone like me understand better. Maybe throw in a few pictures or graphics in the edit. Especially with the socks. I have no idea what you were talking about. Thanks for making great free content - keep it up!
hi I was scrolling thru my UTube and found you. Thanks for answering ? I always thought about. But when you say at the beginning hi fellows I am a 61 year old woman who loves the game of baseball so why not just say hi all .
Matt, did you struggle with your career ending? I only played some indy ball and called it quits do to!injury but when i was done i really had a hard time. I felt a void in my life. I now play competitive slow pitch and that does help.
I really like these baseball stories. Since you mentioned socks...can you explain the whole hi-stirrups/sanitary socks thing? What purpose do they serve? Protection? I tried wearing some to a softball game one time and all they did were fall down over and over. Lol. I always liked the look of those late 50's teams and their baggy uniforms...but I don't think I'd want to wear them. Ha.
I wear the high ones. I originally used those ones because when I played 2nd and SS the long ones got in my way and when I moved to LF I just kept them.
Not sure about now, but as i remember, first contract Red's players had to shave and wear stirrups. the ones playing at league minimum, about ten years ago.
When I was a kid dreaming of being a ball player, I was always worried about the uncomfortable uniforms! The polyester was so bad that I'd wear long underwear underneath despite the summer heat. Seinfeld even made an episode about it!
I wish I could meet you, and see if I could hit one off you.. haven’t swung a bat since rec league , but I had a .500+ average but I’m 24 now so I doubt I could hit a ball off a tee haha
Antonelli, can you share your opinion on the Mark McGwire Sammy Sosa homerun chase and were they treated like Milli Vanilli because the steroid era of baseball. What's your opinion of college players getting paid playing football and basketball? High school player can sign professional baseball contracts but have to be 1 year removed from high school to join the NBA and 3 years removed from high school to join the NFL. Do you think Lavar Ball JBA league a nice alternative to college basketball.
We get our specially made by the company that produces them. You should be able to find some online. I think most companies make them. Tougher if you just try to go to sporting good stores. Good luck! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I use to attend the Rivercats! I would purchase the flex plan, I think was what they called it, you would get 40 passes for the season and use them any game you wanted. It was a good time!
Dude I hated teams that I played for that made you wear pants up and stirrups. I'm a straight pants down guy, and definitely don't feel comfortable playin like that. That's how it was at Western Oregon when i was there. How comfortable you feel in your uniform definitely affects play in my opinion.
I’m so curious to know if all star players have to follow some of the mundane rules. Like if a dudes smashing 60-70 homers do you think the Yankees would make him shave if he didn’t want to
Frank Robinson was the judge for the O's in the late 60's. He once fined the bat boy (Jay Malzonne) for dropping a baseball or not holding a sign properly. Malzonne has lost his hands and had to use hooks. The O's treated him like anybody else. Kangaroo courts can be great morale builders.
Uniformity is part of being in a "team" environment. This comes from the military I believe. Personal appearance for a team should be very important. Like it or not...you're part of an image a "product". We had many of the same rules when I played hockey ages ago.
11:40 Were there a lot of players who didn't speak English? I thought there were a lot of Black guys playing only to find out most of them are Dominican or Cuban or something.
I wear knickers anyways so wouldn’t as big of a problem for me but on the socks but I could see it being a problem for others, but the beard I’m rule I’m 17 and mine grows like a 40 year old lol
We are the same age. I looked you up because I thought "man he's young" having never used a real razor. You must have waited until your were in yout mid 20's before you first shaved lol?
WOW. . . . . his Yankees coach was RUDE when he said "go shave your effin face". . . . . I hate facial hair on myself, so I wouldn't have a problem shaving, but i would have told him not to talk to me like that. . . . . Trust me, everyone deserves respect. . . . . . . . . I wanna know who that coach was that said that to you, Matt. . . . . He was rude as hell.
Now it's all I use, but I became a grown adult long before I learned how to use a real razor. A few years ago I went on a trip with my wife and forgot the cord for my electric razor and had to wing it with stuff I borrowed from her dad. It took me like two hours to get it done. I had to google "How to shave with a real razor" like a stooge.
@@AmericasComic legit laugh everytime that line is brought up.....if you listen to them do commentery on that ep they talk about how Mattingly wanted to keep saying the line
CalledFromPalmdale part of the job. I don’t think an mlb player worth their salt is going to make a deal out of it, they’re just there to get their reps and move on.
