Not sure that does anything with balls and strikes: Media: "Mr. Ump, why did you call that game-deciding pitch a strike when it was a ball?" Ump: "It looked like a strike to me"
@@probaddie456 as with anything in life. You’ll perform a duty differently if you know you’re held accountable. If you know you can mess up with no repercussions. Then who cares
@@joshx413 I can only see this being helpful in cases where an ump consistently turns in below-average performances game-over-game. But fear of "being held to account" isn't going to help anyone see pitches better. That's a fundamental problem of human perception.
@Brandon Lynch 😂😂😂 my parents came to every game that I played in HS and college. Now they come to watch me umpire! So I had coach have a response like you and say “No one came here to see you, you know that right”?! I laughed and then point to my parents and said “they did!” He got red in the face and walked away! Do me a favor and tell me what rule number 1 says in the official baseball rule book. Come back and comment!
@@socialumpire rule book is irrelevant to his comment about how umpires effect the outcomes of games 😂 no chance you can defend nearly any call in this video
It won’t happen until it’s tried and proven at the minor league level to the point of getting the 3D aspect of the strikezone. One thing you gotta know is the TV zone is only 2D
@@dominusdelupis3045 the 3D models are after the fact and not an accurate representation of the zone. It’s never calibrated to the batter and every 3D model looks the exact. No two strike zones are the same. They have to figure out how to accurately use Questech in game real time to calculate PX & PZ scores to use the computer in game!
Fuck that it’s already bad enough they extended the playoffs just bring up the umpires from minors that are more accurate and swap them with the shitty ones in the mlb down to minors
@@caseymurray4195 there’s a thing called a union that doesn’t allow for this mindset. If it wasn’t for the union umpires would get fired everyday just because of public opinion
Do you cry over hitters swinging at balls and looking at strikes too or just umpires? Hitters job is to hit so if they don't hit .1000 you should cry over that bc it's so easy and nobody should miss. Do you cry over fielders too who make errors yet mistakes should never happen bc it's their job not to miss right? I'm confused do you also cry over cat hers framing which is meant to fool an umpire? Kinda seems dumb you whine about umpires doing their "job" when mistakes happen you lmfao ☠️🤣
It's embarrassing how confident some umpires are in their incompetence. You would think they would watch tape of their mistakes and get better. I understand that it is very difficult to determine exactly where a ball is when it's travelling so fast...but some of these umps need to improve. I can see an inch or two off the plate...but some of these are missing by 6 inches or more.
The entire logic of framing is stupid tho. The strike zone is over the plate not the catchers mitt lol. I shouldn’t complain the Yankees have one of the best framers in the league but it’s still dumb
@@kentkuduk3108 it’s quite literally impossible for the human eye to judge from the plate to the glove. An 80mph pitch would give the umpire 0.03 seconds to determine that.
lots of people don't understand just because the ball is off the rectangle strike zone projected on TV doesn't mean it didn't get the plate. very first pitch in this vid for example, anyone with a brain can tell because it crossed to the right over the plate, it was a clear strike from the umps perspective.
@@RobL350 The umpire isn't even directly behind the plate. They're looking at it from a skewed angle over the catcher's shoulder. Balls that go wide right or wide left should be easy to spot if they _don't_ cross the plate. And then you have Angel Hernandez whose strike zone is wherever he feels like it.
@@AdderTude 0:02 - 0:03 this umpire clearly has a perfect view of the ball. And the ball moved from the left to the viewers right (umps left) and must of, IMO clearly, crossed the right of the plate from camera angle's perspective (umpires left).
hes a better guy than me just off that, but then again he is just a rookie so under those same circumstances i would also just walk away and beat up a pillow
@Brendon Buffaloe i mean most rookies dont want the bad name as just a rookie, even though its a bad call its 1 strikeout out of the many to come fir him
Nobody expects a home plate umpire to be perfect every game, but these misses are absolutely brutal. Makes you wonder how the players manage to hold their tongues so often. If a wired court is good enough for tennis, then why won’t baseball go to a wired plate so that the strike zone is not only consistent, but totally accurate. The human element be damned…
That call Strikeout call to Contreras at 1:29 doesn’t even look bad anymore when compared to the few that came before it in the compilation, and that’s saying something
I would not be able to hold me cool. When you’ve worked so hard to get to this point and you’re trying to win your city a world series… this is unacceptable
Just like if you get payed to hit like you should never miss or look at a strike or swing at a ball. You should be hitting .1000 since umpires shouldn't miss either. Especially fielders too like if you make an error that cost your city wins then you should be thrown out bc mistakes can't happen ever
And I'm pirate ejecting someone before the home plate meeting is impossible. The umpire literally does not have control of the game until the home plate meeting. You could literally talk as much s*** as you want to an umpire all the way up until that point, but until then the umpire has no power whatsoever over the game. It's kind of surprising how MLB umpires don't even know the rule book.
It might be time to get rid of home plate officials and replace them with something else. 😂 Like seriously. Do they get their paychecks reduced with these bad calls?
True I think we should also get rid of hitters too and use robots, just like the umps there is no reason they should miss a strike, swing at balls, and not hit .1000 like it's their job to hit so they aren't allowed to make mistakes that change the game. Same with fielders we need robots and take their pay bc no way should any human getting payed to field ever make and error or mistake in the field that could hurt their team. Crazy how dumb people sound when you realize mistakes happen ☠️🤣 like you're crying over only umps why
I've seen a lot worse. A couple of observations: If they put in automated umpires, we will find the strike zone is in reality very small, and pitchers will have to adjust their delivery, assuming the computers are programmed according to the rulebook. The high strike zone will be much more honored, and pitchers will pitch higher, which will make strikeout pitchers more dominant. Without the soft inside and outside pitches being called strikes, though, I think scoring will go up. As for now, they know who the good home-plate umpires are. They have the statistics. The best solution is to identify the best and have them assigned as permanent home-plate umpires, whatever crew they are on. Of course the union won't let that happen, is my guess.
they have to bring in the automated strike zone and make it so umpires are not immune to discipline and heavy fines for terrible calls no matter what they are! like A.J pierzinski said to an ump..'do you have any balls in that bag that you can see"?
Wow, these are baffling. Imagine being one of these umpires and being shown this. I umpired college ball and never had a bad call like these. I feel sorry for them.
no need for balls and strikes called by humans. use digitial. the tech has long been around. I was brought up on baseball but do not watch anymore because of this bs.
If they're not going to use technology to get calls rights, change the pay structure for umpires... Pay them $1000 a game minus $100 for every pitch they call incorrectly
Two things in MLB now. ZERO accountability for MONEY and ZERO accountability for awful Umpiring. It's 2023 and it has NEVER been this terrible. Egos are completely out of control and the Puppet Commissioner is absolutely ZERO help. The only recourse is for people to walkout or just not go.
Credit to the catchers with framing on some of those pitches, the ump’s can’t see what we see, but some of those are absolutely egregious. Especially the ones in the bottom of the ninth with RISP, straight up blowing games. Absolute joke. Can’t wait for robo umps and challenges on strike calls to put these clowns in their place.
Should be able to fine ump.s Guarantee they’ll start making better calls if they have a certain number of ball/strike/safe/out calls. I’m think if they miss more then 10 as a ump calling balls and strike and more than 3 calling safe and out they should get fined 3k and additional 1k per incorrect call after the fact.
Teams should have the right to appeal at least a couple of calls per game. It shouldn't take too long as it is displayed in the virtual strike zone after every pitch.
Problem is, you could have filled up hours upon hours of pitches similar to these on the season. It would be one thing to call a corner strike and then call a pitch just off the corner a strike, but too many times a pitcher can throw the ball in the same location 4 straight times and have the count be 2-2. As a pitcher and a hitter, that makes your job harder. If a guy behind the plate is consistent, you can adjust, even if it is adjusting to balls being called strikes and strikes being called balls. Consistency is the key. But these umps nowadays are nowhere near consistent, other than the idea of being consistently bad.
You have to get the sense these umps know they will not be punished. With technology, fans and players know immediately if the correct call was made. Perhaps if MLB starts fining umps for missed calls it might improve. I doubt it, so we might as well just implement the robo umps behind the plate.
Umpires themselves are making the case to go to some sort of automation calls behind the plate. I believe they are still needed on the field but home plate? Not really. Plays at the plate can easily be settled by replays.
Even as a Marlins fan some of those calls were really bad for our opponents like how can you call some of those pitches strikes when the ball is clearly like full seven to nine inches off the plate doesn't even make sense at all.
some of those called strikes were outside all the way from the Pitcher to the catcher.. These umpires are blind and trying to hurry the game up. Time to replace them all.
1:44 I like the dude that just walked away without arguing, alot of these players would just chew people out especially me, I would get so mad that I would throw I bat at the umpire.
I get the whole “dropped third strike” rule where you can run, but what about being able to challenge called third strikes that are clearly balls, I mean if it’s right on the black, dead outer edge of the strike zone that’s one thing be aggressive and choke and poke that ball but if you see as a coach the catcher clearly have to frame the ball 6,7 or even 8 inches or more off the plate it should be a thing where you can be like, “I wanna second opinion from replay”. I know it probably doesn’t make any sense but that’s just my opinion
Okay people. The little white box that appears on the screen is not always an accurate representation of the strike zone, neither on the corners nor at the top and bottom. Additionally, the dot that appears is not an accurate representation of where the ball crossed the plate, which is critical in determining pitches on the corners. These graphics are creations of the TV networks. If the technology were that good it would be used in place of human umpires.
Or you could just totally miss his point and be a dick. That works too I guess. No shit, some of these are close, but the ones that are a half a ball outside look WAAAAAY closer live and without that little white box there (fyi the umpires don’t have that box as a reference). He’s saying the strike zone is 3D, not a flat box. The ball can hit the zone and then land in the glove outside the zone
