In the third edition of MMA Roots, Sherdog Brazilian correspondent Marcelo Alonso recalls the history of Japanese Samurai Yuki Nakai, the 150-pound fighter who in a single night defeated two heavyweights and marched forward after suffering permanent vision loss to face Rickson Gracie in the final of 1995’s Vale Tudo Japan tournament.
Being blinded in one eye, Nakai retired from combat but dedicated his life to bringing jiu-jitsu back to Japan. In the video Alonso, who followed his saga since Nakai’s first trip to Brazil, brings some interesting details about the Japanese icon’s martial arts journey.

Everyone Rickson Gracie fought in MMA were inexperienced pro wrestlers. Yuki Nakai was the only legitimate martial artist Rickson faced in MMA. And the guy was small and had just been through two wars with heavyweights and literally had his eye gouged. It was an unfair mismatch from the start. It's a shame there was never a rematch and a shame Rickson never tested himself against other advanced experienced fighters.

Almost everyone, Masakatsu Funaki was a legit Japanese badass heavyweight impressive record and wins over Ken, Frank, Rutten, Mezgar and Yuki Kondo just to name a few. This was Ricksons only true test and yes he should never have fought Yuki due to weight difference

Rickson's reputation is certainly inflated and I wouldn't rank him particularly high among that era's greats. That being said: he beat Funaki, who was one of the best early mma fighters.
