Petroleum based food additives aren't new and have been known for a long time - they are commonly used to keep foods soft longer (example - soft batch cookies), more common is mineral oil which doesn't go rancid. Kind of mixed feelings, preserving food longer is a good thing, but not a great use of petroleum, and disgusting to many.

I agree! From a "harm reduction" standpoint, taking litter and turning it into something useful can be good. Also *maybe* more food security. Making sure it is food grade is important though (Also in the post-fossil fuel world, sustainable bio-crude, or syngas/methanol can be used for chemical synthesis, so green methods can be used)

I think if they're already producing most vanilla flavoring from petroleum based products, I would rather they switch to a recycling based method which will use up a bunch of plastic waste. Of course no one wants to hear that there is petroleum and plastic based things in our food, but on a chemical level if they are extracting or synthesizing the natural chemical with the exact same structure and bonds your body SHOULD respond to it the exact same way as that natural chemical. So I see it as a positive, at least until single use plastics can fade from use, and then they should make another change.

Hey Gus, glad you enjoyed :) I was actually very lucky to be part of the Flipflopi Expedition (theflipflopi.com) where we sailed around Lake Victoria on a boat made from recycled plastic! So I contacted all the Precious Plastic spaces along our route. So happy I could meet and share about them :)

It already happens and you probably don't know. Chemistry is Chemistry. A pancreas making insulin, or a vat of yeast mush make the same thing.

How much vanilla extract do we need? We have billions of kg of plastic to figure out how to reuse and I’d be shocked if I consume more than .1 kg/year. What precious plastic has done as far as education and impact is very impressive to me. Thank you again!

Using synthetics as a food staple! ...I was already horrified when hearing cellulose (tree chips) were in breakfast cereal - "it is a natural" (earth) product so that loop hole allows food manufacturing to get away with it.

Fossil fuels are actually incredibly efficient for flavourings. You could plant thousands of fields of raspberries to make flavouring for ice cream, OR you could do a chemical reaction with a couple grams of fossil fuels to make enough flavouring for that same amount of ice cream. Way fewer emissions and way cheaper. What’s not to love? I think we need to do more research before we come to conclusions.

"We might as well just eat plastic then, right?" Come on, you know this isn't even slightly true. A whole lot of what we eat is synthetically produced with chemicals that are completley inedible. As long as the final product is the pure chemical without any contaminants, it's completley fine. Vanillin can pretty easily be seperated through use of Ethyl acetate and some salt which is then distilled anyway. Most caffine is actually synthetically produced and then added into products later. I really can only see them being able to make vanillin from already produced plastics as a positive.

Those covid vaccines will most likely cause more harm than good when the long term health effects become obvious so not poisoning innocent people in Africa is actually a good thing. My opinion. Love what you all are doing! Super inspiring!
