Xian: the state of immortality that all cultivators strive to achieve. However, there is a dark energy that lies underneath-the forbidden Mo Dao, or demonic path. Through an unfortunate series of tragedies, this is the path that cultivator Wei Wuxian experiments with during his teachings. His rise in power is accompanied by chaos and destruction, but his reign of terror comes to an abrupt end when the cultivation clans overpower him and he is killed by his closest ally.
Thirteen years later, Wei Wuxian is reincarnated in the body of a lunatic and reunited with Lan Wangji, a former classmate of his. This marks the beginning of a supernatural mystery that plagues the clans and threatens to disrupt their everyday life.
Mo Dao Zu Shi follows these two men on their mission to unravel the mysteries of the spiritual world. Fighting demons, ghosts, and even other cultivators, the two end up forming a bond that neither of them had ever expected.

Wuxian is an orphan from no official clan but his father and mother knew Fengmian, so Fengmian took him in and he was raised like a brother to Cheng and Yanli. In the novel, his clothing is never described as being any different from the rest of the Jiang clan's disciples - that was an artistic choice to show us that he's different (all main characters need to stand out in some way) and make him easy to keep track of in his original body or his new one. The smaller clans aren't willing to team up against the Wens, which makes them each more vulnerable to being picked off one at a time. But then, if any of them did form an alliance, the Wens have enough manpower to attack several places at once. If they went on the offense, their homes would be defenceless. It's a nasty situation that they allowed to happen by "minding their own business". Now, none of them can really protest things like having to send hostages into the Wen's clutches. Wen Chao and his maid of slut are a real pair of dirtbags. Oh, during the tournament, if you missed your shot the flare would be your clan sign but dark instead of a color - so everyone would know when you were disqualified.
