there are even a few kiwi voice actors throughout the movie I notice straight away, like moana’s dad and the fisherman, even tamatoa- and as an australian the new zealand accent is even rly distinct from ours so not noticing it is interesting. may just be that kiwi actors get even less of a chance to use their real accents in mainstream hollywood films than us, so it isn’t recognised as kiwi in the US, etc.?
@faureamour
@faureamour Год назад
@@seesawseesaw It can be really hard for Americans to recognize the difference between the Aussie and Kiwi accents. It's probably what you're saying, that we just don't hear it frequently. It has some Melanesian elements in it too, the Kakamora is a legend from Solomon Islands and they’re definitely not made of coconuts, but actually the cultures of the pacific can sometimes overlap, like in my part of Melanesia we also believe we become sea creatures when we die.

Fun fact: Moana setting and inspiration is from all the Polynesian cultures mixed together. Like for example, some of the songs are sang in Tokelauan language and the costumes has like a mixture of Samoan and Tongan traditional clothing..so its all blended together beautifully. Fun fact about newborn turtles: a big thing that's always made clear is that if you're going to help them find the water, you absolutely cannot carry them there. They have to find it on their own. Fun fact, Polynesians discovered Aotearoa New Zealand. According to ancient Polynesian folklore, the North Island of NZ was named “The Great Fish of Maui”, the South Island was named “Maui’s Canoe” and Stewart Island was named “The Anchor Stone”. After the discovery of Greenstone (Jade) the South Island was given a second name “The Greenstone Waters”. It would be amazing to see a real movie “Maui’s Final Quest”. The black patch her and grandma were dancing on the beach was a patch of black lava called pahoehoe (sounds like pa-hoy-hoy). I'm crazy lucky to live Hawai'i Island and the islands are made out of 2 types of lava.. the smoother kind that flows out in layers of ropy sheets (like the piece they're dancing on), and the other is a'a (sounds like ah-ah). It's gnarly, sharp, jagged stuff. So some beaches have smoother pahoehoe on them, others the rougher a'a (that the ocean smooths out to some degree, over time). Happy birthday Bryce! So the stories of Maui are part of New Zealand’s legends and myths and we have a Language here called Maori and the word Moana literally means Ocean and Heihei is the word for chicken and poa is short for poaka which means pork 😂😂😂
@hankakah4180
@hankakah4180 Год назад
Pele and Maui are common in many Polynesian cultures. In Hawaii we are the Kanaka Maoli, and our language used to sound like the Kanaka Maori until the Missionaries came and changed our letters to represent K for T, L for R, to fit their printing of their bibles which then preached as their GOD that Hawaiians should listen to, and not their own. Our chicken is moa, like your huge flightless birds that became extinct. Our Pua'a is pig, like your poaka, while we use a glottal stop or 'okina to represent a missing consonant. You might still say Tahiti, while Hawaiians say Kahiki, you may say Tapa, but we say Kapa. You may say aroha, we say aloha. I was told of New Zealand Maori elders who came to the Island of Hawai'i to the southern most point of the island, and they chanted a chant of where they came from. The came from a place called Hawaiki, where there were cliffs and mooring holes. If you go there, you will see the cliffs and the boulders along the shoreline that were drilled with holes in which to moor their canoes to. When the Maori elders saw these, they cried, as their chants were real, that they understood where they came from.
