Just to correct, the battle date isn't from the Nu Gundam. It's from the Core Fighter from the original Gundam. It drifted away in space after Amuro meet up with White Base crew. So the Amakusa is just One Year War Amuro battle experience without a shed of mercy.
Great review. Couple of things to mention/clarify: -The often parroted factoid of F91 being a TV series that was hastily made into a movie is more myth than fact. In reality, due to an abnormally long pre-production period, the staff working on F91 had not come to a proper consensus as to whether or not it would be a TV series or a movie. Eventually, they began working on a proposal for a TV series, which was pitched to Bandai and then rejected, but the reason Bandai rejected it was because of time constraints. The proposal was made around September-October 1989 and if a new TV series was to be made, it would have to premiere at April 1990. There was simply not enough time to get the show ready by then, which is when the idea to rework what they had into a movie came about. -Whilst the show likely would've ran for 50-ish episodes, the plot that served as the basis for the movie was based on an outline written for the first 13 episodes NOT the entire series. As far as I know, the plot in the movie is meant to be identical to that of the outline, with the only major change being the ending, which Tomino had changed to a more romantic happy ending as in the outline, Cecily/Berah was still fairly hostile to Seabook at that point in the story. The Bugs also were something that was added later. All this info comes from a behind-the-scenes account by Koichi Inoue, who worked as the setting manager for the movie, and was written in Gundam F91: The Official Edition. Mark Simmons has an English translation of this account on his site Gundam Unofficial, as well as a detailed record of the entire movie's production. -Speaking of the Bugs, there actually is an earlier instance of Artificial Intelligence being used in Gundam, and that's in the Gundam Sentinel novel, which features a mobile suit know as the S Gundam that has an onboard AI called ALICE. ALICE is capable of co-piloting the S Gundam and a good chunk of the novel is told from her perspective as she gains sentience.
It was suppose to be 50 episodes and was in production, but victory and the japan economy crash of the 90s made it so it was a movie or just cancelled. Plus CCA was the last thing made for UC aside from maybe a few side stories that have gone completely forgotten and the F90 manga. As for the Crossbone, fair review even if I disagree, the crossbone stuff is some of my favorite gundam along with stargazer
Another fan appreciating Crossbone, but there's also few more things about CB:Ghost and CB:Dust - with Ghost still having an ongoing translation up til the finale, and Dust hasn't been done in English fully but there's scans of it somewhere from beginning to end. There's more Crossbone content, but to Hasegawa doing fun things to it. Still my go-to UC stories before the depression run that is Victory Gundam. And yes, Hasegawa wrote a Victory side-story that stars Judau and ZZ's last hurrah, but its still canon in my book and Uso only knows that story.
A few notes on Crossbone: If I recall, Crux Dogatie effectively singlehandedly founded the Jupiter colony. Sherindon is not only a Newtype philosopher but a Newtype elitist and an aristocrat still with allegiance to the Vanguard. Tobia is a Newtype himself however he very clearly denounces Sherindon's delusions of elitism and Newtypism is basically never again addressed in Crossbone. (This is a move I personally greatly appreciate, given series like Zeta and especially Unicorn seem to get caught up in Newtypism and treat it as a superior advancement of humanity, while say After War Gundam X grounds Newtypes as equals to Oldtypes). The Skull Heart scanlations are missing two pages from the second story, but they don't affect the plot at all. I do agree about Crossbone being a product of its time and a bit goofy to be animated and appreciated, but the fights would be absolutely terrific to see animated, especially the showdown on Earth (which, amusingly, Quavarze was turned into an attack for the X3 in the Extreme VS video games) The story does generally get lower in quality with each subsequent release. After Ghost then Dust was released X-11 and Love & Piece, with another series announced recently. I do recommend the original series through Steel Seven but no further. Additionally, there are no English translations for Dust or Love & Piece, while Ghost and X-11 I believe only have incomplete translations. (I've been planning on getting around to Dust myself but have been unable to due to many other priorities) I'm new to your channel but I'll be sure to keep an eye out for your Victory video, interested to hear more opinions on an overlooked show. Personally I sum it up as "I enjoyed it but don't recommend it." It's a bit of a slog.
Btw there's been a ton of recent late uc mangas that help build up the events before F91. The f91 prequel manga drawn & written by Oono Junji ended just a bit ago. F90: Fastest formula is another recent manga that expands the oldsmobile war(s) that left the federation drained during the midst of f91. I would recommend checking out the original f90 & silhouette Gundam manga since they build off it.
I'll try to get to all of them thanks for the info! I don't speak Japanese so I can't do everything but what I can find I'll try to do before moving onto other timelines
You're now in the far end reaches of the Universal Century. After this you have... G-Saviour to look forward to Yeah definitely make sure to cover the AU's next. Gundam X and Gundam 00 are my favorites. (Also I do think you should cover G-Saviour to. It's not the best but it's campy and evoles the sane feel as that infamous OYW game).
Dude, I love F91. Kou too. I never thought that Cecily lost her agency as much as she was trying to escape responsibility while coming to grips with the loss of her friends and home. Id never really thought of the episode skip you point out. That does make a lot of sense.
It's cool if you like F91 and Kou, it's all just opinions here! But yeah it's pretty clear they repurposed a lot of the original plans, if I remember correctly, they had the entire series composition done by the time it was rejected.
IF Crossbone is to ever be animated, they will need to go back and lay the groundwork by remaking a successful F91, which is something I don't think they will ever do...
Wait, Steel 7 is goofier than OG Crossbone ? Like, I remember there are some lighthearted moments in it but not anything that I would say goofier than OG Crossbone.
I mainly feel that way because of the new villain being a literal DBZ character compared to Crux Dogatie's more grounded motive and a couple other things, but the difference isnt that huge.
@@NopeMechs I mean, I wouldn't describe a (two) psychic eugenically-racist genocidal maniac(s) as "goofy". Is he over the top? Yes, absolutely. But that basically describes Crux and his legacies/followers. Also, I consider him an extension/pawn of Crux more than anything else, with his mobile suits being literally two hands executing Crux's genocidal plan
Crossbone Gundam was ZZ Gundam done better It had a Serious Story but knew when to get goofy, Plus I activily dont want to punch the characters in the face for being idiots (Beacha) I do think a Crossbone anime COULD work and still hold out hope we may get one. But considering the Gunpla for the series is among the top sellers (Even beating SEED and Unicorn sometimes) I highly doubt we'll get it. Still "A Boy Can Dream~"
I don't think it's entirely fair to say that F91 wouldn't have been a good series based on the film, but it's true that what's present in the film is nowhere near developed enough. Amuro isn't the strongest Newtype ever. According to Tomino, it's Judau. Kamille had a lot of potential, but retired and it never fully developed. Amuro is more developed than Kamille, but less potential. I think Amuro just sort of gets more recognition than Kamille and Judau, and no one really sat them down and did any serious investigation.
Also, Newtype=\=Piloting skill. Amuro at Char'S counterattack is essentially the top level pilot in UC. They used his data and clones to get better pilots not newtype
F91 and Crossbone is weird one for me. F91 is so unfortunate because Tomino cannot fully realized his story because of studio mandate and just compile everything into this mismashed of a story (can you even call it a story? i don't really like that there's a sudden jump of plot out of nowhere). and Crossbone is weird but entertaining, but i don't really remember the story that much.
Good luck with Victory Gundam because its a show even Tomino hates 😂, so I'm definitely curious on your opinion for Victory Gundam. I got a couple of mecha recommendations for you in the future to keep an eye on. 5 in total. Gun X Sword Space Runaway Ideon and its movies (specifically Be Invoked) Aura Battler Dunbine Heavy Metal L-gaim Brain Powerd 4 of them Ideon, Dunbine, L-gaim and Brain Powerd are non-gundam works Tomino created or at the very least directed, Brain Powerd was created after Victory Gundam, Dunbine is credited as the granddaddy of the isekai genre, Ideon is one of the inspirations for Evangelion and is what gave Tomino the nickname "kill em all " Tomino, and L-gaim was the last show made before Zeta Gundam and has a somewhat star wars vibe.
Great review! Your content is awesome and you definitely deserve more subscribers. Glad to see another newbie Gundam RU-vidr. I’ll get around to reviewing cross bone eventually, but I’m happy to see more people bring it up. I hope it gets an official release in the United States one day.
@@NopeMechs I love wacky stuff too, don't get me wrong! I know it's 100% Japanese and its a stylistic choice but the art gives me this 'How to draw anime' from the Scholastic book fair vibe
I can sum Gundam F91 up as a compilation movie of an anime series that never existed. Also if you think Newtype monkeys is an outlandish idea, watch Gundam X and its rather infamous episode.
I think you do very down to earth reviews and you can exactly capture the thought process what I've had in the past decade or so while watching gundam series so I just wanted to comment that you should continue with this style, it's pretty refreshing.
I've seen F91 and read the original Crossbone Gundam manga, but didn't read Steel 7 or Skull Heart. After watching this, I feel like I was justified in not pursuing them. Thank you for the recommendation. I should probably read Crossbone again as it's been a while, but I do remember it being absolutely crazy by UC standards - in a good kind of way. I do get reminders of Crossbone from the Super Robot Wars games appearances too.
