This single shot is so LOADED too; how much of a shadow Aeriel casts on Suletta, that all around it is desolation and war but Suletta still looks upon it like a sister after everything its done. Just how much it dwarfs her is so symbolic of how much more value their mother places on a literal weapon over flesh and blood. Nuts!

And as Suletta is stepping forward you can see how much care was put into animating the gust of wind, and the weight it has against her body, matched with her expression; the detail in this OP is amazing

People seem really fond of the series, and Aerial units are selling like hotcakes. There’s hope.

Come to think of it... It also foreshadowed pivotal events. Suletta and Miorine are shown in different frames, foreshadowing their parting ways. Quiet Zero appears on the title screen for a second. Sophie and Norea disappear in the distance, foreshadowing their deaths. Suletta looks at the Aerial flying away, foreshadowing that she would lose it. If it follows the same trend as season 1, I'm guessing that we will soon get a new version where Suletta flying the Aerial will be replaced with her new Gundam, the "Calibarn".

I started to like this opening a lot more. Yoasobi's Shukufuku represents the Slice of Life of the first season, while Slash is more Gundam-feeling

I don't think he's supposed to be based on Jerrid. Given the Revolutionary Girl Utena story, character & thematic parallels, I'm pretty sure he's supposed to be an analogue for Kyouichi Saionji. Both characters are introduced as obnoxious, possessive jerkasses providing unwanted attention to the main character's future love interest, which causes the main heroine to intervene and end up in a duel with said jerkass. The main heroine ultimately emerges victorious and is then surprised that they end up 'engaged' to the girl they helped out, who in turn is revealed to be prize of a dueling system waged within the school. Meanwhile jerkass stubbornly refuses to give up & tries to redeem his honor but instead ends up getting repeatedly humiliated and ultimately expelled from the school. Its during their time of expulsion that jerkass undergoes character development and ends up turning out to be a much more complex character than what they initially appear. I should also point out that the writer for series, Ichirō Ōkouchi, actually got his start writing the light novel adaptions of Revolutionary Girl Utena, long before he hit it big with Code Geass, so the parallels are almost certainly deliberate rather than coincidental.

This is true, until you go deeper into the first opening, The Blessing. And I mean by getting into the lyrics itself. What WFM does well that not a lot of anime do these days is that it tells its story vividly outside of the actual anime through its music and other media. Of course, you can understand the story well without diving deep into the music, but the music gives the audience a deeper understanding of the story. YOASOBI gives us a gift by giving us an official English version of The Blessing. It is also confirmed in the official music video that the video and the song itself is based on a short Prologue story called Cradle Planet. Both the story and the song is told through the point of view of Ericht (Eri) Samaya. And it definitely hits different when you consider the recent episode. Below I'm going to go deeper into it (SPOILERS FOR THE WITCH FROM MERCURY) Eri looks after Suletta and treats her like Suletta is her little sister. Cradle Planet goes into details how Eri saw Suletta grow up in the MS, the story goes all the way until Suletta is about to be enrolled in the school. It even gives us a scene where Suletta actually teaches Eri a lesson about not running away. (which I mention because of an important piece of the song) It also goes into details, in the end, how Prospera is actually sending Suletta to the school as part of her revenge plot and Eri wants Suletta to not be part of it at all, but at the time she does not defy Prospera. Thats pretty much Cradle Planet. The song itself does a really good job bringing Eri's emotions and feelings and thoughts from Cradle Planet into lyrics. It talks about how, more than anything, Eri wants Suletta to be free. She wants Suletta to take on life that is not determined by someone else other than Suletta (this greatly hints at Prospera's control). She wants Suletta to run her own life and determine for herself where she will go (Cue the lyrics "It's your life, your story, your way"). Eri remembers Suletta really depending on Eri for support (cue the lyrics "As to scoot, holing up as you ran up to me. So, you climbed up in the cockpit and stayed inside". One of the few things that was directly from Cradle Planet). But Eri acknowledges that Suletta, over time, is not the same girl always crying in her cockpit. ("Before I realized, you grew up to be powerful"). Eri pretty much gives Suletta her blessing to take on life without depending on her. Until Suletta takes that step, Eri swears to be by her side. Which takes us into Episode 18. Episode 18 (Season 2, Episode 6) has Eri pretty much saying "time is up". Going back to Cradle Planet, Eri never wanted Suletta to be part of Prospera's revenge. She wanted Suletta to be free and have control of her own life, as greatly depicted in both the story and the song The Blessing. Eri only mutually agreed to let Suletta go to school because Suletta always wanted to go to school. In Episode 19, Eri decides to rip the bandaid and tries to force Suletta to stop depending on her or Prospera. That it was time to let Suletta free, that Suletta should no longer be apart of Prospera's revenge plot. We will see on Sunday (and the episodes aftterwards) if Eri is successful (SPOILERS OVER) Sorry for the essay!

It's actually still very much in line with Utena thematically, characters and story. Even timing and tonal shift as our two leads get closer. Fantastic in near every way offhand so far.

I'm actually glad that it has nothing to do with Evangelion becauae people praise Evangelion as if it was the best mecha anime ever, when in reality it is NOT. It's a ahow with symbolims that mean nothing to the series with a protagonist that never grows.

Why is Suletta's brainwashing a "weak link"?

@@Peasham People are attracted to characters with a will and mind of their own; even Nika, in her weak and effectively under-control position, is fighting for her ideals and getting her ass kicked for her beliefs. Suletta has sort of kind of started to question her mom, but it's going very slowly. Don't get me wrong, Suletta is compelling, but she abandons her own thoughts and submits to her mom too easily right now, and people who are under someone's control are not as intriguing no matter how strong they are in combat. It would be nice to see her rebel.

@@tokitobe2450 I can't describe to you the amount of brainwashed characters who people adore more than non-brainwashed characters, you have no idea what you're talking about. Not to mention, most actions she took she STILL took of her own free will, using the brainwashing phrase by herself to motivate herself into doing things, I've never seen that in media in general prior, and a character whose brainwashing is mostly used by herself to help others is nothing I'd describe as a "weak link". Not to mention, it's glaringly obvious Mio and Aerial are gonna help Suletta break her brainwashing, this is both spelled out in the English version of the first opening song and obvious considering Mio basically loves Suletta and very much knows that she's brainwashed by Prospera.

@@di-gun5791 I like Elan 5. He's doggedly determined to live, which is a healthier attitude than Elan4 and Norea, which was more like "coping with a crappy existence". Have to say I don't really get how Suletta can be a viable romantic interest for Mio at this point -- she's emotionally like age 10. Any groom/bride who is blindly obedient to their Mom isn't ready to partner with anybody so I hope they help her grow really fast. I feel sympathy for Suletta but she's demonstrated very little growth compared to the other characters, even Chuchu.
