Excellent video, much more detailed than the last video i watched from another tuber as all he showed was brushes on a bench, no fitting like you did, you could teach him how to make videos lol, i love how you totally stripped the motor to clean, most people are lazy and just charge disabled people for a new motor as they can't be bothered getting their hands dirty, them fibre glass pens are brilliant, I've been using them on circuits and rc motor comms for years, well done again, great video.
Thank you for parts 1 and 2 of this video. I have installed a new brake, and a new potentiometer with new wig wag. I have a Shoprider Allrounder. From following your instructions, I took the motor out and used an air compressor to get rid of all the carbon powder waste. I also used "electronic contact cleaner" in a spray can to clean motor. I also used a glass fibre pen to clean it up. I installed 2 x new 43 carbon brushes. On the test ride Scooter started out perfect. Then it began not moving after I stopped and taking off with a jolt. The jolt got worse when I stopped in the supermarket to put shopping in my basket. It stopped completely and did the beeping. I got off and disengaged the brake into neutral. Pushed it a little and put the brake back and was able to drive again. Each time I stopped I had the delay, the jerkiness and the big jolt. Half way home I lost speed. In total I did about 4 or 5 km round trip. In the end I completely lost speed and came to a complete stop. Had to push Scooter home about 600 metres. However battery indicator on dash was still good. Could you please advise what I need to do next? Signed, Immobile in Australia
@@tomjacques4 the commutator is clean now. The brushes were not bad but l replaced them this morning. I had all the symptoms of your video to begin before l took the motor out. But after my few km test ride l have lost all power and had to push Scooter home at the end. Also going down hill was scary. Thank you.
@@michaelunderdog5039 have you checked the brake? Is it dimming on while you driving or is it sticking , Have you run the motor with 24 v. applied. Seee when it stops and then goes again dies it take off very fast
@@tomjacques4 Brake was not sticking. It was not engaging. Coming downhill was scary. I was slowing down / stopping by turning key off. On test ride at the beginning I engaged wig way and there was a delay before take off and then a jolt. This got worse. At the supermarket it delayed and then jolted forward. I had been off the road for months. Purchased new brake. Purchased new potentiometer with wig way. Spent quality time cleaning motor. I thought motor was beautiful clean. The situation has gone from the problems you describe in your video to zero movement. I had to get off. Disengage lever at the back and push home. Is it possible that I have ruined motor by using a little bit of spray from a spray can a product called "electronic contact cleaner"? Tom, this is my 2015 model. When it broke down I went and bought a 2019 model, but it broke down with similar symptoms. I do a lot of stop starting because of exercising my service dog alongside of Scooter. Was going to start working on the 2019 next. I installed brand new brake and potentiometer. Not sure what you mean by applying 24 volts. Could you please direct me to what that means? Thank you so much for all your help. Michael
@@tomjacques4 Dear Mechanic, How do you run the motor with 24V applied? I purchased a multi-meter.What do I set it to to test 1) the motor and 2 each battery please?
Thanks, very informative video. You should be useing a copper or hide hammer on that aluminium casing. Also motor was a bit ight after reassembly just tap the top and bottom casings end on to relieve the tension of re screwing caps on
Steve Ashcroft A good point Steve, I have used a copper hammer in the passed put the effort to release a seized disc sometimes requires more of a solid impact. Mind you not many people have one.
I would say that is not normal because a break should never get hot it's just for stopping power nothing else The Pride power wheelchair user my name is Cruz definitely something you can call the manufacturer or or the company was you can speak to a certified Tech specialist for Mortar repairs
Hey brother how you doing I just found your Channel I like how you're helping that poor young lady is there's a lot one people like yourself no there's a need for what you do Mark listen to uses brother where can we get used parts what are power chair because there are a lot of places that say they sell used parts but they still want season 1 big money and I'm talkin about life 500 to $900 per motor and that is just estimate if you can believe that thanks a lot brother God bless you
Thank you for info’ that has helped to rectify my problem, what I have noticed is that the rear wheels are able to be stopped by hand when they are in motion,is this a thing that is normal.🤔.
Sir I am very impressed with your skill and very competently executed your repair on this particular scooter ....my scooter is very like this one and has shown exactly the same problems....i would be gratefull for any advice u could give me....do u get to luton mabe or know of someone a professional as you
Very useful video. I did mine but I can't use it now as I can't figure out where the the black bent washer goes. It flew off when I took brush department off and have no idea where it came from. 🙃
Loving your tutorials , i have an easycad powaglide and its showing a fault but cant find any info at all , got power and lights are bleeping but will not go , maybe need new brake or throttle pod ??
Difficult to say what the problem is until we can see maybe a video of the problem. And the flashes or beebs. Also what type of power module that is fitted. If you want you can send us a video to tomjacques@btinternet.com
Giesbert Nijhuis dome this once on an old obsolete motor with a bearing puller, or you could use a couple of screwdrivers but be very careful not to damage the windings. You will notice if the bearings are gone as the brushes are worn more to one side.
Cleaned loads of these motors out over the years. Messy job but it does prolong the life of the scooter a bit more . Don’t do too many of these videos though or I’ll be out of a job 😆😆😆
Hi well thank you for showing me what I been looking for but I need to know how to adjusting the steering rack bar front wheels on my shoprider rocky 6 do you have a video for it that area thank you from Doug
few years late i know - but couldnt you file the high spots off the commutator so a wider brush would have a larger surface area to run on [albeit warn to heck!]?
Hi best thing is to stick it in a lathe and take a bit off. Don’t use a file lol. Can’t use a bigger brush as it has to fit in its original brush housing
@@tomjacques4 oh yes of course - but i was thinking of us "d.i.y'ers" who dont have a lathe lol- was thinking file, followed up by 600 grit wet n dry {or 1000 if you want to go that little bit extra lol) Have your website on favourites bar now - as my dad, the wife & a family friend all have scooters - the tiller knuckle on the wifes gogo sport is starting to wear/slip so will be looking for a replacement soon. Thought about ebay but im guessing its a design error so all second hand ons will be similarly worn [metal too soft?]
Great video thank you from across the pond. Let me ask you I have a pride scooter that 10 years out of production. But don't have the money to buy a new chair, are these brushes and bearings specific to my motor or are they universal because I tried calling for matienace and they won't touch it because pride no longer makes parts for this chair. But the motor I suspect uses parts that are probably still made. I think just because they can't get them from pride , it has something to do with their warranty on the work they do. But that's not an issue for me to go ahead with my own repairs. Can you help me out with some advice and is there anyway to find out the parts and numbers I need to do this before taking it apart? Thank you from California
Thanks for such a helpful video. Could you please advise, would it be possible to clean out the motor using a mini air compressor that I would buy off ebay? Thanks. Michael in Australia
@@tomjacques4 - Thanks mate, you are a legend :-) - I have a little air blaster that runs on CO2 cartridges. It looks like a tyre inflator but its designed as an aggressive dog corrector. My service dog and I have heaps of trouble with off leash dogs. I haven't used the dog corrector, becoz it will scare my dog. So........... I am going to try cleaning the motor with that. Thank you so much!
@@tomjacques4 - wow, of course...... Thank you so much for your reply again. My friend who always kept my Shoprider on the road, suddenly passed away last month. Just watching your work, and you being kind enough to reply is really helpful as I make this transition of trying to step up (as best I can) for myself. Thanks mate.
I have a motor at the minute that is making a scraping/grinding noise, I think its the bearing. can these be changed or greased up at all? Or do I have to buy a new motor? Shoprider sovereign deluxe 4mph
Yep problematic that one… if its stuck then you will need to break it into pieces mind you make sure every thing falls out, so hold it above and insert screwdriver from the underside ensuring you don’t damage commutator break of little pieces at a time or you can dismantle the complete motor.
Once he buy is removed then I just pull it off. But recon your jammed solid I use a ultra long H/D punch and hit the inside of the wheel hub mind lubricant it ever so often. Now this can be dangerous of causes it could pull out the axle shaft out. Then the axle has had it. I have used gear extraction tool on the wheel and put as much pressure on it then hammer from the rear. Once I had to cut the wheel off not to cause damage mind you only 1in 30 odd years.
@@tomjacques4 thanks I thought I'd ask I thought maybe there was a special puller tool for taking them off I've chipped up a few wheels trying to get them off most are not to bad but a couple off them have just been so tough, thanks for the reply great channel great videos
@@tomjacques4 Hi Tom thanks for the reply 43 was to big for the mercury m44 I have I've tried 42 I had to file them down to fit but don't work to good it's my mother's scooter and don't seem to be able to find the original carbon brushes anywhere online for the mercury m44 any ideas where to find original brushes for this scooter please and thanks for the help.
toyotapaulip Hi mmm must be a USA scooter as don’t have that one in the UK. But looking at the pictures looks like a colt. And over here they are fitted with S drive controllers and 3 flash codes means motor issue so check all connections between controller and motor also brushes. If you are unsure you can send us a picture of your controller.
Hi Tom thanks for sharing your knowledge of repair, I am a Canadian with a rear axle movement I don't think wheels should move right to left by a 1/2 inch, I find it is rubbing and drain battery fast then normal. Can I put a spacer or washer to stop the moving right to left or is the axle broken ? please advise Tom, Thomas
Hi Thomas, your correct should not have that travel... take the wheel off and check to see if the cir clip has broken or slipped off.. you should see goove on the axle where the circlip should be located. that stops the wheel from moving close into the frame work and rubbing.. if you are not sure then take some pictures and send them over.
@@tomjacques4 Thanks Tom I believe I know what you are speaking of ( it is a clip with to holes in the ends ) I don't have that tool, I will need to ask a friend. So if I replace the clips it should correct the problem?.
best check to see if thats the problem take the wheel off and have a look. some scooters may have a spacer ... this could of been lost when a repair is carried out .. like a punture repair.. or if your back wheel has been knocked then it could of pushed the wheel against the cir clip forcing it out of its grove. hence causing the free play.
marco teves hi difficult to say as have not seen your product but I would check brushes and springs brush guides also clean commutator and blow out motor with air to remove and excess dust
Having a complete nightmare trying to undo one of the long screws that go right through the motor, it was so unbelievably tight I've ended up rounding off the screw head. Any advice on how I could remove this screw? Thanks
@@Ninko85 good set of vicegrips that have good teeth and jaws not too wobbly, clamp on as tight as you can, give it a good jerk counterclockwise. If you go slow they might slip off. This is the best way I know how, no guarantee, cross your fingers, pray, keep rabbit foot close by, say some words in voodoo, and good luck!
Sure can. But I always check the commutator for damage, #cleaning and this can only be checked by turning or picking the scooter causing the commutator to turn.
Andrew the bearings inside the motor housing are sealed if worn replace them with a new bearing. Don’t grease them as you may contaminate the commutator.
find a bearing house for cheap bearings mobility price ££££ for a bearing from them ( it worked for tractors' and motor cycles )££ simples btw brushes are known as carbons ( its what they are ) , at least you dont need seals
