Starting with solid density, bond energies and using the conservation of energy & momentum; a simple one dimensional chain model of e.g. N4 decomposing into 2 N2's gives a velocity of detonation, detonation pressure, and relative effect that are within 25% of the experimentally measured values. These theoretical values are invariably larger than what is observed primarily due to the Boltzmann distribution and the reversibility of steps in the reaction near the detonation temperature.
