The Modal Electronics Argon8 is a digital 8-voice polyphonic synthesizer with 32 oscillators and 120 morphable wavetables. Further, it contains numerous static wavetable processors (including de-rez, wave folders, wave shapers, phase shapers and rectify) that can be applied to the 120 wavetables to further alter the sound. On top of this there are another 8 types of oscillator modifiers including: Phase Mod (FM), Ring Mod, Amp Mod, Hard Sync and Windowed Sync.
The Argon8''s digital filter is a two pole morphing resonant design with multiple filter types. The filter can be morphed from low pass, through band pass, to high pass and also has a notch configuration. The three dedicated envelope generators (for AMP, MOD, and FILTER) and two-audio rate LFOs further expand Argon8’s soundscaping possibilities. There is also a versatile 8-slot Mod Matrix that lets users knit modulators together via 11 mod sources and 52 destinations.
The Modal Electronics Argon 8 also has a 4-axis joystick that can be assigned to various modulation destinations and virtually ‘locked’ when desired. In addition there is a 512-step sequencer with four recordable parameter animations, and a programmable 32-step arpeggiator with rest capability. Oscillator mixer, voice drift and width controls can be used to create massive stereo soundscapes, and the FATAR TP/9S keyboard supports velocity and aftertouch. The Modal Argon 8 features multiple keyboard modes including: Mono, Poly, Unison 2, unison 4, unison 8, Stack 2 and Stack 4. There is also Glide/Portamento with both legato and staccato modes available.
The Modal Argon8's effects engine offers waveshaping distortion + three independent configurable stereo FX engines, including: Chorus, Phaser, Flanger (Positive or Negative), Lo-fi, Tremolo, Rotary, 3 x Delay types (Stereo, Ping-Pong, Crossover) and Reverb. The Modal Argon 8 has 500 patch memories which are all fully editable, and ships with 300 factory programs and 200 user patch spaces. A further 100 sequencer presets and 100 FX presets also come with the synth.
The Modal Electronics Argon8 digital wavetable synth has a distinct sound and allows for creative music and patch design. The oscillators, wavetables, filter and effects all work together synergistically to give the musician a varied palette to work with. Although it is a digital synth, it has a certain warmth to the sound that I find it quite pleasing to the ear. In my opinion it seems to excel at doing lush pads, soundscapes, ambient drones and industrial distorted patches but it can also do bread and butter sounds as well such as leads, organs, basses etc.

Wow You really did end with the most mysterious epic sequencer ever, starting at 28:21. This really shows what this beast is capable of. Sounds like a complete ambient berlin schooled song.

@@Soundsauca 4 voices on XD vs 8 on Argon, full ADSR on Argon vs limited on XD... XD does have custom digital osc though + analog... yea, tough choice. Haven't tried XD myself but it also sounds nice. :)

@@Soundsauca Had the same doubt, but ultimately resolved for the Argon8. I already have a Minibrute2 and the Minilogue XD seemed to go in that direction sound-wise, while Argon is a completely different and rewarding approach.

I really hope Modal is selling a ton of synths. They damn sure deserve it, the argon is an almost magical synth. The modal 008 is one of the best analogs I’ve ever played. Good stuff guys. AND GREAT DEMO!

I wonder if I got the argon8m desktop unit if it would be too much overlap with my asm hydrasynth or are both totally different? Loving my hydrasynth but would love to have argon8m as well to pair together.

Both are wavetable synths, the Hydra has more routing and modulation capabilities, but the Argon8 has a different sonic flavor. I'd say they complement each other well but depends if you really need more than 1 wavetable synth.

I haven't tried Korg Wavestate but I did own a Wavestation. Wavestate is a sample-based synth and IMO is great for evolving cinematic soundscapes, big ambient pads, and sequences with lots of moving parts. It also seems to require a lot of in-depth programming if you really want to get into the deeper features. It also has 64 voices which is great for lots of notes. Argon 8 is pretty much a hands on digital wavetable synth, it excels at morphing wavetable type sounds and can also do ambient pads and a lot more. It is less complicated to program but only has 8 notes and a more limited sequencer. If you want sampled sounds (ROM) as oscillator source, then Wavestate is the choice. If you prefer wavetable sounds and morphing through wavetables, Argon8.

Thanks for the great presentation. I have been looking for a wavetable synth for more ambient applications. I was going to get a Korg Wavestate (as I have 2 Korg Wavestations), but I have no room for another keyboard. This unit fits the bill and seems to have wonderful functionality. I am picking it up on Wednesday...looking forward to it. Thanks again.

It’s so strange that we are getting analog synths these days with sequencers and multitimbrality but digital synths like this and the HydraSynth seem to totally ignore these features. Although this does have a sequencer it’s just weird I can’t do splits on a digital synth and there’s also no hold function for the arpeggiator. Just weird little things like that seem to be oversights.

There is hold function for arp - pretty sure its hold Velo button beside joystick, then tap Note (Y+) Sustain button near joystick. Might require pressing Shift mode first.

Splits on a 3 octave? They could have done it maybe for the 8X, I think the processing power would be pretty huge though and push the price point up. As it is for the price it's bloody fantastic

@@Dudderlyful My 3 octave Korg Wavestate uses a standard multi-sample patch and can be stacked or split across the keyboard. Plus, it sounds absolutely incredible!

Hello guys, Im new to synths, and willing to buy my first one. I need to take a really hard decision between the ARGON8 and the MINILOGUE (not XD). I like the sounds of both, but I have noticed that in most of the videos the argon8 is much "colder", while the minilogue is "warmer". cant really describe the different, but something about how the minilogue cuts through my ears is different. is it even making sense? maybe I just didnt hear enough? How can I make a proper decision?? Thanks in advance.

The Argon8 is a digital synthesizer (wavetable oscillators, digital filter), whereas the Minilogue is an analog synthesizer (analog oscillators, analog filter). As such there will be a difference in sound as you noticed. Analog generally tends to sound "warmer" than digital. It depends what type of sound you prefer, and the capabilities you are looking for. The Argon8 is 8 voices and Minilogue only 4 voices. The less voices = less notes you can play at once, which could be limiting for strings, pads and sustained notes. I should add the Argon8 is more complex than the Minilogue so it may be a bit overwhelming as a first synth. If you are new to synthesis, the Minilogue would be easier to get to grips with.

I heared the Cobalt8 after those comments, and it really seems better for my needs! Like something between the minilogue and the Argon8. A little less biffy than the minilogue, but something about the Cobalt8 character got me

So it this the bass monster i think it is, and that the skulpt was? I cant tell now but i recall being blown away by demos i saw a few months ago. Just wondering if my memory is correct. Can owners confirm?

It can certainly do big basses, but I'd say its strengths lie in pads, leads and non-traditional wavetable sounds. I did showcase some patches in this demo that have a lot of bottom end as well.

@@synth4ever yeah i was being lazy by asking. I was on my cell at the time so i couldnt catch any lows, lol. i'll do some more listening now that im on a PC. I recall hearing amazing deep DX style bass coming from this thing. and the skulpt was really amazing too. I just couldnt tolerate how cheaply built it was. I have never owned a synth that plasticy and it was worse by miles. it's a familiar cheapness, but i couldnt think of an example of other products that are built that way. Maybe near a happy meal toy and im not even trying to be hyperbolic. it is VERY thin and light plastic

Tough call, depends if you want analog oscillators and how many voices. XD is only 4 voice but has analog osc + wavetable osc whereas Argon8 is 8 voice and is all wavetable.
