Modbus function code 1, also known as Read Coil Status, is one of the fundamental function codes used in the Modbus communication protocol. It is primarily used to read the status of coils in a remote device.
In Modbus, a coil refers to a discrete output or input point that can be in either an "on" or "off" state. Coils are typically used to control digital outputs such as relays, solenoids, or indicator lights. Function code 1 allows a Modbus master device (usually a controller or computer) to request the current state of one or more coils from a Modbus slave device (such as a PLC or a remote terminal unit)
In more detail, when a Modbus master device sends a function code 1 command to a Modbus slave device, it requests the status of a range of coils. The command consists of the function code 1 followed by the starting address of the coil and the number of coils to be read.
The slave device, upon receiving the command, retrieves the current status of the specified coils and sends a response back to the master device. The response contains the requested coil status information packed into bytes.
The Modbus function code 1 command and response typically use a simple binary format, where each coil status is represented by a single bit. The status of multiple coils is packed into bytes, with each bit position corresponding to a specific coil. The first coil status is represented by the least significant bit (LSB) of the first byte, and subsequent coil statuses follow in the same byte and subsequent bytes.
