The maximum data transmission speed for MODBUS (or for that matter any bus) depends on physical layer, distance, number of nodes, bus capacitance, etc. With RS485, MODBUS can easily achive max speed of more than 10 Mbps and can go as high as upto 50 Mbps. Also, for RS485, max. cable length is 1200 meters.
