TechnoBuffalo There's a reason Used Model S's from 12-15 are so cheap, they also have a risk of coming with several issues from the factory and things service centers have/could never fix; could be a very costly investment if you're not under Tesla's direct warranty. One Example being the door handles getting stuck.

ZambonieDude - Actually you are a bit off. There really are no issues on the Model S from 2012 to 2015 that Tesla can't or could never fix. That is entirely incorrect. The most common issue on the very early door handles was a micro switch failure, where the handles wouldn't sense touch if they retracted (they auto retract after about 45 seconds if you approach the car and don't open the door). They re-designed the handles with a better micro switch, and if the handles ever got repaired, they got the newer generation handles that are rock solid and pretty much have zero issues today.

In those other years, if you lost your keys, you potentially lost your car. There was no easy way for the dealer to stop the car from working with a stolen key short of changing the ignition lock, all the door locks and the trunk lock. If you lose your phone, the lost phone can be deactivated from the car. If you lose your wallet, chances are that nobody would find the card or know what it is, but the worst case scenario is that they know that it's for somebody's Tesla. I am not in the habit of losing my wallet, and it's unlikely that if a stranger found it, that person would try to steal my car. But the worst case scenario is that you have Tesla get you new card keys.

Having owned both the 3 and S I find it hilarious how reviewers think having *less* physical control is better. When you get hit with a sudden downpour the last thing you want to be doing is scrolling through a bunch of menus to turn on your wipers to an effective speed... or trying to drive and adjust the air vent/control through the touch screen. The lack of a driver instrument panel , cross traffic and pedestrian alerts, or REAL blind spot monitoring is not a great/cool/innovative thing either... although some of those issues are with the S as well.
@farmedb314
@farmedb314 5 лет назад
Push the button on the end of the turn signal to turn on the wiper if needed. The also turn on automatically when rain is detected. I didn't know that S had blind spot monitoring, or that 3 did not though.

If I had the money, I'd grab a model s. It has a soft spot in my heart that the model 3 just doesn't have. It looks like a cheaper tesla, which is what it is, and I have to say, it's like 70% in beauty in my opinion. I'd wait for the S refresh and lease one. Thinking about it right now bc my lease is almost up on my current car

Jason Donohue I thought i was the only one. Yeah, it looks cheap. Plastic hubcaps on a $50,000 car. In terms of design they went backwards. Waay backwards! Model 3 looks alot like a Citroen C4, from 2004, wich also had a digital central display. Only much smaller. Even a new Jetta looks more beautiful, and has a steering wheel display! I get it. It's highly advanced car. But why they didn't bother to make it a beautiful car? That is just really weird.
@jasondonohue2714
@jasondonohue2714 6 лет назад
Dan _ I know what you mean. But honestly think about it. I was thinking about this last night, Elon Musk is pretty much selling cars for his tech company. Tesla is a tech company making cars. Their first 3 were great, and I see the design they're going for here, with autonomous driving around the corner (more less). But the car can definitely look better.

I wholeheartedly agree that the 3 looks like a cheaper version of the S, which is not a bad thing. It’s a less expensive car. I’m surprised to hear this guy say the S looks outdated because even though the design has been out for several years, it looks way sexier and enticing than the 3. Maybe I’m biased because I took delivery on a Model S late December and it still feels fresh to me and I don’t see that feeling going away anytime soon. If you’re still on the fence, I’d say go with the S because you will get your $7500 tax credit (which I just filed for yesterday). You will miss out on the tax credit and waste time waiting for the Model 3.

I tried both. It's very clear that they've cut expenses wherever they could with the model 3, because I found it to be about twice as noisy as the model S. I just couldn't take the amount of road noise, so I ended up with a model S. I really like having that extra screen info right in front of me, and I also very much like to have a heated steering wheel since I live in Norway and my fingers get freezing cold during winter. Not to mention the powered hatchback, which is quite a bit more convenient. It's more expensive, but in the end I have no regrets. I think I would be constantly annoyed and miserable due to the noise etc in the model 3. I suppose some people don't mind some noise, but for me it's a big deal. Overall I just found the model S to be way more comfortable. I guess you get what you pay for. :)

I've been considering buying a Tesla for a while. I tested both the model S and the model 3 and I was surprised by how noisy the model 3 is compared to the model S. Perhaps I have sensitive hearing, but the road noise was just unbearable to me. The model 3 had about twice as much noise as the model S! Also, I didn't like not having any info right in front of me. I found the extra information provided right in front of me in the model S to be very convenient. The model 3 doesn't even have a heated steering wheel, which is almost a must for me since I live in Norway, and it gets freezing cold during winter. I tested both. I found the model 3 to be just too noisy. It had about twice as much road noise as the model S. It doesn't have a heated steering wheel, powered hatchback or air suspention, which is quite convenient. Especially if you live in a colder climate like I do. Being able to raise or lower the car, as well as having a heated steering wheel is quite convenient during winter. I also don't like the minimalist dash in the model 3. I like having that extra screen info right in front of me. Especially the zoomed in GPS and autopilot info right in front of you is quite convenient in the model S. in the model 3 all that info is packed into one screen in the center of the dash, and that just makes it slightly harder to make out. I found that it took more of my focus away from the road because everything got more cramped, which made it a bit more difficult to operate. I was considering the model 3, but I ended up with a model S for these reasons. No regrets :)

@evolv.e
@evolv.e 5 лет назад
Keyur Patel regarding sound system and suspension, I’d recommend playing the same tracks in both cars to see which you prefer as sound is subjective to the listener (personally, I prefer the S Ultra High Fidelity Premium sound); The suspension is more objective, however, the S longer wheelbase yields a smoother ride, and even smoother when coupled with the air suspension (which I love). If you’re more interested in throwing it around, the lighter, smaller 3 is more track ready.. especially the P3. They’re both great cars, so if you haven’t done so, make an appointment at your local Tesla showroom to drive both. Should be easier to decide immediately afterwards. Hope that helps 🙂

I have driven the Model S on several occasions. It’s really a beautiful car and luxurious, it is also large, deceptively so until you sit inside. Yes it is fast but you don’t see S owners generally “ getting on it”. That would be a statement the S owners don’t seem to want to make. The S is too dignified for that. The Model 3 I have owned for the last 2 months and it is definitely a sporty car, dare I say muscle car, it’s hard for me to keep my foot up and I am 65! You can forget the advertised 0-60 times, this is about a 4.5 second 0-60 car and as stated in the video, 0-30 in either car is faster than just about anything on the road. The Model 3 begs to be raced around not something you would likely do in the S. One thing I have noticed in stop light a -go-go, just about everyone looks at the 3 and sees Tesla, because the 3 has not been out long and not everyone is sure it is a 3 but they know it is a Tesla. As a stated , the S does not seem like owners take particular advantage of the power at the stoplight so I am puzzled why almost every car concedes at the stoplight to the 3. Maybe they are just being polite to the old guy.
@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn 6 лет назад
Most people slow down a little when they get older. Glad you still enjoy acceleration. :) Agree with all of your comments. Model S is a larger, heavier car that is less agile and responsive than Model 3. 1,000 pounds less weight makes a big difference in how Model 3 feels. It's also much more capable on the race track due to the lighter weight and resulting greater energy efficiency. All have excellent suspensions, steering, and extremely low center of gravity due to the battery pack being at the bottom of the car. Due to that, even the large, heavy Model S drives like a much smaller, lighter car. Model 3 makes even better use of that design. Did you know that the Tesla S/X/3 rear suspension is nearly identical to Ferrraris, and very similar to Audis in front? Like Audi, Teslas have a virtual steering axis which makes the communication of what the front tire contact patch is doing much clearer through the steering wheel. It tells you exactly what the front tires are doing. Outstanding suspension designs is part of the reason Teslas drive so well, along with the extremely low center of gravity.

model s is smoother, faster, and had more storage (double) despite being only slightly longer. I personally like the model s handles way more despite breaking semi often in earlier versions. I was between a new 3 and used model s and I am very happy with choice of s after driving both. my second car is a mini cooper, felt too much like model 3, so I went with the S over 3 for all those reasons. I also really like the mid screen + dash screen vs just center display in the 3. lastly exiting the model s having traditional door handle vs the button. model 3 has had doors breaking using the handle that is only meant to be used when power goes out.. otherwise button to exit doesnt feel intuitive to me or more so passengers who won't intuitively know to push button on door vs pulling the (slightly hidden) handel inside m3

I just got a S P100D, it now has the fast touchscreen (MCU) that the 3 has and a slightly updated interior. I could have ordered either car, I went for another S. The cargo space is double and I can afford it so that was a good chunk of why I bought it.

wouldn't have poked it at all in 7/2018...you got supercharging and the full credit at least the thing is 150k. 1/2 yr old models with 4000 miles on them going for 120k tesla gives away floor models of the p100's for 128k, videos on youtube showing it even, technically 120k as credit is intact i was honestly surprised. thing depreciates about 20% day 1 thing depreciates like mad as its horribly overpriced to start with, 75k more over base for 150 horsepower for that money you'd expect a whole 2nd drive train battery and motor with 200kwh and 900hp....instead you get the 25kwh 20k battery upgrade (which itself is laughably overpriced at 700$/kwh) and 150hp more over 100D thanks to larger motor worth maybe 10k? 30k of upgrades for 75k more, its teslas cash cow and hasn't been touched in nearing 1.5+ years now. not to mention its battery is 4 years? old, refresh will see the newer cell outputting more power, for less money likey 85D 120D P120D not only more kwh but newer cells putting out 800hp+, if the price stays at 150k maybe its a decent value roadster coming at 200k for a true sports car with 200kwh and 1000+hp, you'd actually be getting your monies worth 50k more for 100kwh more battery, a bargain as 100D owners are paying 20k more for 25kwh now. and some 400 more horsepower in a significantly lighter car. a 200k 1000hp+ 600 mile range roadster will make a 150k 650hp 300 mile range S look questionable at best cant think of many cars out there that charge 50k for 150 horsepower more, pretty expensive tuner job

@Leo9ine
@Leo9ine 6 лет назад
FYI - 18 inch wheels give a softer ride than 19s, not stiffer. The difference you're feeling is the coil springs on the 3 vs the air suspension on the S, not the wheel size. Still an awesome video though, keep it up!!
@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn 6 лет назад
The factory tire pressure on the 18s was 45 PSI for efficiency. But that also makes them ride harder. Elon tweeted that 39 PSI in the 18s would ride softer at the cost of a little range. Tesla has already softened the suspension on Model 3 compared to this very early car.

Great video, but I'm not sure the comparison with a 75kwh model S was a true measure of why people buy that car. With a 75kwh battery, the range is going to limit it's use as a full size sedan. So it would be more fair to up this to a 100kwh and then compare the price difference for that so that the two could be compared as they are... equal in use but for different markets perhaps. Good video of both cars though.

Also a mayor reason to go for the S instead of the 3 if you have the money, the S can be bought and driven now. I you are making the choice right now and don't have an early spot in the model 3 build queue, it might be years before you get a model 3. I believe it is something like two years minimum if you order one today. So that's also a pretty big reason to go for the S(or X for that matter).

I heartily agree with video about huge differences. I drove the X, S, and 3, 2018 versions. At my age (58) two aspects are paramount-- Noise and ride; S is vastly more refined in both. I also agree that model S interior, including vents, could use refresh, more like Model 3 which is superlatively uncluttered and future-proof. Another comparison, reference. My Mazdaspeed 3, with lighter aftermarket wheels and higher-profile, quiet tires (Continental DWS), is as quiet as the Tesla 3 (I dare say that!). My Mazda doesn't quiver (overshoot, or porpoise) on uneven concrete highway, where Model 3 does. Unique to Model 3 is suspension noise, a "clunk" over bumps-- makes the ride seem worse. No car is best in every aspect, including price. Hard to regret purchasing any of the three Tesla 2018 models. Tesla drivetrain are best passenger car drivetrain, for performance, efficiency, and emissions. A tidbid: Seats folded, makes a bed 6'+ in Model 3 and 6'4"(?) in the S. And to opt away from Model 3 gray wheels to more popular silver, results in a larger diameter which necessitates lower tire profile, placing rims closer and more susceptible to road hazard. Another advantage, Tesla S.

Having had a BMW i3 for 3 years I traded it in for a BMW 440i Convertible which I have been driving for the last couple of years. Now with the newly installed photovoltaic panels on the roof of our house with 12.5 kWp I decided to get back to electrical an chose to trade in the Porsche Panamera Turbo with a Tesla Model 3 Performance. And gosh this was a good decision although Teslas lack a lot of sporty drive comfort Porsches have but their technology is just ahead of all other car manufacturers by ages.

I would go for the model S and here is why. 1. I don't like the 15 inch touch screen that is universal, that is a huge distraction for me as a driver. 2. I like the split screen on the 17 inch monitor vs the 15 inch portrait view. It eliminates blind spots better. 3. While the space is nice in both cars, I still think the Model S gives a better ride and I don't want to feel every bump on the road. 4. Free refueling is a big draw for me. With a high price tag with the 3, I would not like to add extra money just in charging the car. 270 miles per charge is huge especially since I may only drive the car 30 miles per day. Those are my 3 reasons. I don't need a supped up Model S but a moderate Model S is a good buy for me.

I needed this video. THANK YOU. I'm trying to make this decision right now before the Model S tax credit expires and the free supercharging goes away. But with 1 kid and another coming in the next year or two, I have little doubt that I need a Model S. The only alternative would be a Model 3 plus a compact SUV like a Rav4 or CRV. Model Y would solve this problem too!

If you bought at the right time model s 75D was only $5,000 more dollars then average cost of the model 3. Also the warranty is drastically better on the model s plus free supercharging. The only thing I liked better about the model 3 was the vent but if you never tried it you won't miss it. I like to wake up to billion-dollar views in the mountains and on the coast. Sleeping in the model s is very comfortable the back fits a queen foam mattress. And we moved up from a Prius. The model 3 felt about the same size too small for my family.
