In Part 3 of my Building an On30 Swamp Trestle series, I get needed building supplies, and start the trestle build and install.
The MCL Co. is my fictional On30 narrow gauge Louisiana swamp logging model railroad. The original large layout was moved twice, the last version was dismantled about a year ago and is slowly being rebuilt as a shelf layout in a spare bedroom/office of our new home.
One of the fun aspects of my model railroading experience is sharing my modeling with you, through RU-vid and model railroad publications, such as the On30 Annual!
Be sure to "Like" and "Subscribe" to my swamp logging RU-vid channel!!!

For my HO trestle I'm using kindling from a round of firewood - looks great!

Looks great! Never feel like you need explain or apologize to the “craftsmen” or “Rivet Counters!” You are promoting the hobby and this video does a great job of making it less intimidating to someone thinking about jumping in. Looking forward to seeing more!

Bamboo is a grass - you get a different cell structure, so it takes stain differently than pine or basswood. or poplar. I'm pretty sure those dowels are 6mm diameter - roughly 11 3/8" in 1:48 scale If you have a table saw, some scrap lumber, and some time, you can crank out some custom stripwood. If by some chance you have one of the super-fine small table saws such as Micro-Mark offers, you can make scale lumber with a good finish, and much less wastage for the saw kerfs, Works really well as a second strp after you rough out some 1/4" or 3/8" or even 5/8" pieces with the standard saw.

I build just like you do and I don't give a hoot as to what other people think. I like the way you build. Great video, BTW. Thank you for sharing your amazing layout with us and for all the hard work that it takes to document it.

Hello from OZ Just remember a lot of loggers used RAGE (rough as guts engineering) to get into the cutting areas. The main line to the mills would be to a higher standard of construction, but how much of a higher standard is questionable. If it looks right and works it is right. Do not apologize for your work just do the best you can with what you have, it is a hobby not a wage paying job. If it provides you with personal enjoyment and entertainment then you must be doing it right. I don't think I would have done anything different construction wise, but some nut bolt and washer castings or prints would have made a nice finishing touch before the bents where slotted in. It might also have been wise to base coat paint the swamp before the bridge went in. It will be a pain to paint now the bridge is in. That was a comment with some thought that will be 50c please LOL Don't disturb the water you don't know what's lurking below. regards John

Most of the bents have not been adhered down to the water surface… so I can gently lift them up to paint beneath! Thanks for your great comments !
