That was helpful. My pink foam board bench work has been sitting around for a couple of months because I’ve been struggling with how to make it look like the track fits the landscape. I think you’ve hit on something that can get me started again.

30 years ago I thought there was a Z scale layout in my future, but it never materialised and finally I donated the few items I had to colleagues. Now I'm fully content watching other people building small(ish) layouts I "could" have done but never did.

Always time to start. Make a 2'x4' N scale layout that you can store under a bed. Or a 6"x1' diorama for a shelf. Just try. :)

Always enjoy your videos. J&J used to make two foot long plaster splints that we used in the E.R. Just a cardboard box filled with pre-cut strips. The rolls work too, although I usually use several layers.

For all of you foam cutters out there, check out the Bosch foam cutting jigsaw blades. I have been using them and it is a real game changer when cutting the thick foam sheets. Clean and quick!

You made it look easy. Due to the geographic area I will tend to create with my layout most of the track is above the scenery or at the same level. I can use similar techniques for some of my lower wetter scenery areas.

The one thing I have realized is that many store colors are too bright and need muted with dirt. Then unless its a golf coarse, it will be more of a blend.

Great video DJ and I too was wondering how you'd hide the risers w landscaping etc! You definitely did it and nobody would ever guess there were risers underneath it. Thanks for the great video! I really liked the idea of putting 1 inch foam between the track and the edge of the layout. I need to explore that more. I gotta say, I am not a fan of S-curves on layouts. Do you encounter a lot of S-curves in your job as an Engineer? Cheers and take care.

Yes, a funny story. Years ago a train dispatcher rode my train from Connellsville to McKeesport. He was shocked that it is all curves. He said "On my screen, its a straight line!" LOL!!! Not much straight tracks because we parallel rivers and around mountains, so my layout represents that.

Some of the first road trains I ran were in the Mid-West. Flat track. Very minor grade changes. You could hop on your power and literally take your consist to the next point without ever being able to look back over your train. Piece of cake. Then I ran over mountainous terrain on a regional railroad that had been built over an old logging railroad. I could sometimes see my 60 car train twice. Very different railroading. By the way, on my HO layout where I needed an S curve I made it as gradual as possible.

Can I assume, D.J., that you're using the Woodland Scenics' risers so you can have below-track scenery more easily. That appears to at least be part of its purpose. I really like the outcome of your efforts. The before/after difference is amazing.

I'm definitely feeling stuck, but this really helps! I"m also doing N scale Kato Unitrack. I have my track plan, but haven't decided if I want to model East Coast or West Coast. I live in Pittsburgh, but I grew up in CA and feel kinda nostalgic.

depending on the size of your layout you can do both :) Even a smaller layout can have two scenic areas like the greenery and waterways of Pennsylvania on one side and the California gold country foothills, Sierra's, or Southern deserts with a scenic divider to separate them. @@maxmillianlanders3148 I too have a small n scale layout. I expanded mine to 2.5'x4' so I didn't have to have a really small radius to my oval. It is a double track, and I have 3 stub end (?) sidings, and two places with turnouts between the inside and outside loop. Of course, I've always wanted to make a mountain, so I'm making it on one corner. I've put 2" foam on a piece of hard board and glued it with gorilla glue. I've just drilled down for wiring, which is just track power. I'm not worried about any light for buildings or lamps. Of course, with the mountain it won't fit under a bed now at all, but it would have before. If you have a place to put a wire shelf on a wall, you could probably fit it up there if it was simple enough.

Hi :) It's funny how "tastes" can vary. ;) Myself I really don't like using plaster cloth and sculptamold :P In fact, except the paint and the glue, I am avoiding anything which is wet and takes time to dry. I directly carve all the rocks and ground shapes in the foam itself. Cheers ! :)

@@djstrains Hehe, but some people really love this chicken wire ;) I forgot to mention that one more reason for avoiding plaster and sculptamold is the weight. I can move my network modules alone as they weight less than 10 kilos per square meter each ;) I have 2 smaller networks build on a standard styrofoam sheet (125 cm by 60 cm) and I can move them alone with no issue :) . But what is nice is indeed to see all possible techniques :) Have a nice day ! :)

Curious: Wondering if you have played around with modular modal RR systems. I am currently working on some T-Trak modules, and really like it a lot. It is not the most prototypical system, but I love the flexibility and simplicity of it.

I have a small SUV. I bring a steak knife in the car and cut a 4'x8' sheet in the parking lot. Most sheets already have precut lines at 16".

I guesstimated 2 inches from the edge of that remaining piece, since it was the same curvature.

How about full strength white glue for the foam layers?

Id advise against that. White glue is for more porous materials, so it won't bond well. Liquid nails and hot glue adhere better and permanent.

@@djstrains Thanks, I did not consider that, although I can get white glue for free. I’m always looking not to spend a lot & use what I’ve already got-if I can find it! The south shore of Lake Erie, where I hail from, has fantastic RR museums in Conneaut, Oh & North East, Pa. where they even have a Little Joe electric! Worth a road trip “ mup-here” from Pittsburg.

i have used full strength Elmer's Glue All with good results. I have read it's different in make up than Elmer's school glue. I have tacked the foam down after application and used cans of food or books to hoId the foam in place until the glue dries. So far after being down for a year it is holding well. I buy it on line in 32 oz containers since it's cheaper than buying it in the store. I use the glue for everything on the layout that needs gluing down.

@@djstrains I like your style of narration for your videos, bro. Really laid back and supportive of ppl getting into the hobby. I've been using a plaster cloth called "rigid wrap" I ordered from Amazon. It's almost identical to the WS and SE products although it doesn't seem to have as much plaster packed into the mesh, but you can get a 5 lb roll for about $25 I think which is pretty good considering hobby name brands are pricey lol. It doesn't have pre-cut sections though either so I put it in a shoe box with a slot cut into the box and pull out what I need and then cut it off with scissors. All in all, I really like it. It does the exact same thing as the other brands but I can admit that the name brands have a bit more ease of use.
