I made a replacement paddle handle for one that broke, and thought it would make a great case study on a number of modeling strategies and techniques. Here's a link to view the model in Onshape:

This is definitely one of the most impressing Onshape videos I have ever seen. I absolutely love the high fidelity feature scripts that enable you to do things that would be almost impossible otherwise. Thank you for sharing!

This is one of the best surfacing demo's for Onshape I've seen to date! Soo many little tips along the way that carry so much importance. I can't wait to try some of the feature scripts used here on my future work projects. Great looking paddle board handle and excellent content! Thanks Evan!

Thanks, Nick! That means a lot. if you didn't notice, all of the custom features are linked in the video description as well as the handle model itself. I forgot to mention it in the video.

Great video with a lots of details. A little more advanced than what I'm capable of. Would be nice if you could make a video with step by step demostration of you doing the complete handle. Thank you very much for the great content.

Thanks so much! I'm sure I'd enjoy making a more step-by-step video of this or other models, but theres enough else going on right now that I'm not sure if or when it would happen.

How is it that you only have 628 subscribers????. I've been using OS for nearly 3 years, and I just learnt more in the last 37 minutes than I have from watching all other CAD channels combined. I'm going to have to watch it over a few times to digest all of the info. Between your videos and your excellent feature scripts, you do far more for the community than you get credit for. Thank you!

Thanks, John! That means a lot. I try and pack it in there because people can re-watch or slow down the video if they need to. I just wish I had more time to dedicate to videos and features.

Great video - you've given me a lot to think about and new-to-me capabilities to explore. I was impressed by your use of lofting; I hope you can do a video on that topic one of those days.
@ovyl
@ovyl Год назад
Thanks, Kevin. I'd like to do some more videos like this in the future. Any thing in particular that you commonly try to model and struggle? In the meantime, there are already some great surfacing-centered tutorials in the Onshape Learning Center (learn.onshape.com/).
@kjquiggle
@kjquiggle Год назад
@@ovyl I should definitely revisit the learning center, but videos like yours are a big help in knowing what to look for. I think I am at the not-a-noobie but not quite intermediate learning stage, and that means there are OnShape capabilities that I am only vaguely aware of - it makes it hard to look for something when you don't know what exactly to look for. I have looked at the learning center tutorials on lofting, and although they are a good start I found them lacking in the details of using vertexes, guides, etc., and how these functions work together - or not. I think your paddle video took me up a level on lofting, so it may well be that things that seem obvious to you are a good lesson for the rest of us mere mortals ;-)
@ovyl
@ovyl Год назад
@@kjquiggle There's definitely a bit of a plateau going from beginner to intermediate because so much of the learning content out there is for beginners, and falls off pretty sharply past that. I'm trying to take this to the other extreme, where I assume some intermediate level, knowing that if it's a little over some heads, the most driven people will at least know what they want to learn now , which seems to describe you. I'm glad this video helped you level up!

_"Why spend $30 on a new paddle when I can spend $30 worth of filament and several hours of my own time [designing one]"_ it's so true!!! You never see it in the adverts, but that *IS* the reality of owning a 3D printer 😂 classic line 👌

@ovyl
@ovyl Год назад
thanks, Jonathan! I hope to eventually make some Featurescript tutorials, but until then, watch my "Global Variables" video. It covers some featurescript basics and has a nice build of skills to it as you go (even though the Variable Studios have since been added to Onshape, making this actual workflow pretty much obsolete). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uB43P7LqkHw.html Also check out my reply to a similar question here on the forums where I outline how I learned it: forum.onshape.com/discussion/18181/learning-featurescripts#latest
@jonathanhutchinson5649
@jonathanhutchinson5649 Год назад
@@ovyl funnily, I’ve probably watched it around 5-10 times I’d say! But wait how do variable studios make it obsolete? You mean in so far as you can share variables across a single workspace? I suppose all that stuff tucked up in a featurescript does still have the benefit of being able to apply more advanced logic. Having long formulas or conditionals in those tiny little input boxes sure gets frustrating, what I wouldn’t give for a little resize handle! And also adding comments as you say.
@ovyl
@ovyl Год назад
@@jonathanhutchinson5649 Oh nice! Okay that reaffirms the need for more FS focused videos. You're right that it's not totally obsolete, but the "Global Variables In Onshape! 😱" clickbait is less enticing now, haha. They've also added the "description" field to the native variable feature so you can add your comments there too. It's still a good way to build in some complex logic, and not be stuck in the tiny edit box. I've definitely submitted an improvement request asking for a bigger box to write in.
@jonathanhutchinson5649
@jonathanhutchinson5649 Год назад
@@ovyl the description in native is nice. Yeah to me Featurescript seems like a bit of an exclusive club? Does it suggest that there’s a really small user base of modellers trying it out? It’s great for something trivial but as complexity ramps up I do feel a bit landed into a corner. Especially when you’ve completed all the available training and you’re left wanting. What I do like about the getVariable, is that it can take in your configurations as well. I use it to take in configuration data that is there more as a ‘bounds’ rather than exact need to fit that dimension. Plus more importantly I can manipulate that value dependent on three or four other things without it making 20/30 variable lines in the feature tree
@ovyl
@ovyl Год назад
@@jonathanhutchinson5649 I don't think anyone wants Featurescript to be an exclusive club, but it's a steep learning curve. Most of the people who are best at it have other code background. I don't so most of my features are still a result of stubbornly fumbling my way to something I want, which is a skill in and of itself, and a great way to learn. Starting out, I was missing semi-colons all the time and couldn't even figure that out. I'm starting to reach a level of comfort that I can knock certain things out pretty easily now. If I make videos about it, a big theme is going to have to be "how to learn Featurescript" not just "how to make X feature".

Hi there, thank you for your video. I just want to start by apologizing for my English, it was translated in Google Translate. I would like to know if you would consider making a video of your handle. where you draw it step by step. for my part, I will be able to learn a lot more that way
@ovyl
@ovyl Год назад
Thanks, Dan. I do not plan to make a step-by-step video for this model, but I hope to do some more step-by-step kind of videos in the future. For that kind of thing there is already a lot of good content out there made by Onshape and others.
