Modeling a Slot Canyon

Return to Horse Thief Canyon! In this week's vid, I get back to work on Thunder Mesa's slot canyon after a long hiatus. Horse Thief Canyon was inspired by real places in the Colorado Plateau country like Antelope Canyon near Lake Powell. I model this deep, narrow canyon using sculpted layers of extruded polystyrene foam board finished with Sculptamold, spackle, and acrylic paints.
Thanks for watching, amigos!

So good! I love the things I learn watching Dave work. It's been so helpful. The SculptaMold baggie trick alone is priceless.

The shadows of the train passing across the walls of the canyon below the bridge and interacting with the blue ambient light is honestly one of the coolest things i've seen on any layout

Now you did it, challange excepted in n-scale. I have a spot on my layout that needs a special type of canyon.

Thanks, it's so inspiring. I've been rebuilding damaged wood bridges I've had kicking around for years and same same with old structures. Along with that I've built 2 ore bins from coffee sticks and food sticks and a couple of structures too. I need to get to work tho on my track plan for my new studio. Hopefully that purchase goes thru by end of summer. Thanks again, Thailand Paul, Agent D&RG Ry owner of The 4 Ton Mine.

Terrific job again. A couple points. I have whined, carped, & complained incessantly about influencers battling smoke NOT TO REDUX their techniques or styles. But with your fearlessness to go back to basics shows how you can restart, not just for your long-term subscribers, but for newbees, to our art form. Congratulations. Second I love the way you installed a cyc infinity accent light. Great idea. Next you mentioned how you buy ground cover paints by the gallon. Unfortunately, if you have a customized hue. But buy a decent volume once a year, or two, the color matching can be off. This due to the age of your chips light fade. Or the base hues may be out of production. We'll my main paint store guys do a spectroscopy to match my original order. When I pickup my order they have a print out of the percentage of concentrations. With a swatch of the actual paint. That print out goes into a frosted plastic protector. Then into a binder for safe keeping. And future orders. Lastly, "Native American" ridge. I'd like to make a real prototype example. Before the pandemic I traveled Historic Rt. 66 on my way to my daughter's family in Mesa, AZ. Along the way I came across a road side Hopi site between Holbrook and Winslow. I'm sure there are hundreds of such cliff side dwellings. But here's a heads up for ya'. Again great job. Jim

In Northern Arizona, North of Lipton on the way to St. Michaels is a very unusual rock formation that forms part of the Bkack Creek Canyon as the creek flows down toward the Rio Puerco. The entire wall of the canyon curves from the top of the canyon down toward the earth. You can see all the strata make the grand turn from the hundreds of feet at the top all the way down. It is one of the most memorable geological sites I have ever seen.

Your model of the deck truss is very good with 2 exceptions: where are the iron or steel rods holding the top chords to the bottom chords and a wooden deck truss would be supported on the bottom chord.

Hello Dave, I am new too your channel, just sitting back on a Saturday night enjoying your videos. I am amazed at your work and your attention to detail with the landscaping on your layout, model kits and building structures. Great video capturing, lighting and editing too! Thank you for sharing your talent with us.

I've done something similar to yours, there's an easier way to do it. Instead of the extruded polystyrene, grab a basic foamboard or peel some foam core and make your layers with that. It takes more time in cutting, but a lot less in shaping since you, largely, only need the vertical work for shaping parts and is as solid when it's all together. When gluing sections together, I use 2 pairs of 123 blocks positioned to keep two corners straight.

I always looked for this type scenery when searching YT and never really found it. Until I came across your channel and recently subbed. Ever considered showing the fireworks and how you did? I looked for a bud and only found the vid of show. I’m sure there’s plenty out there but I’d like to see on your layout with your explanation.
