You need to do some research on this, darling. These are just models they don't represent all women from those times. I bought vintage lingerie from the 40s-70s (such as a girdle), and they are not painful, nor restrictive, but helps me in having a good posture and lovely sillouhette.
Most women wore some sort of undergarments to support and enhance their figure. But it wasn’t out of insecurity or something that was painful. Fashion evolves, that modern day logic really doesn’t work. Wearing garments that enhance the natural figure doesn’t mean they didn’t “embrace their natural selves” it’s was fun and harmless.
@@JudgeJulieLit I mean most corsets if worn correctly are great for support but of course if they were worn too tight it could cause damage but working class women in the past have worn stays and corsets just fine.
The beauty of a corset is one thing. The way they would fit a woman's abdomen is another. It was either comfortable or uncomfortable. Maybe, it was a matter of getting used to the way they felt. Thanks for uploading.
Well. I bet many girls wished the reversed in the 1940. The problem then was that you misshaped your innerorgans and could not move, the problem now is that you cover your whole skin with shades and highlights and the you are so thin you do not have the will to move.
@@zeecaptain42 pregnancy "misshappens" your organs more than a tight corset does. As to not being able to move you had women who were mountain climbing, bike riding, and performing all kinds of physical activity in corsets
I know. It looks so beautiful on her its breathtaking. Oh wait. You were making an ignorant comment relating to the myth that its pretty much impossible to breathe in a corset. This corset ONLY nips in the waist. The corset is patterned so that plenty of room is allowed for the ribs - hence why you can see the shape of the rib cage so easily. It perfectly follows the natural line of the ribs without compressing them, focussing the compression on the waist alone. So plenty of room for breathing.
i understand where you are coming from, but i do have corsets and i wear them. If i so much as tightened it to the point where my stomach caves in a little more than it shld, breathing becomes a problem. you start taking quick shallow breaths instead of slow big ones. Even my friend says the same thing, and she goes all out with her corsets. So pardon urself for being ignorant about what i know.
fruitcakeasylum You really shouldn't be getting issues breathing in your corsets. Are they custom made? Or are they from somewhere like Corset-story/Corsets-UK etc? Because those are VERY poorly patterned in that they assume the corset needs to be 4" smaller than all the body measurements, not just the waist so put far too much pressure on the ribs (and hips). You do have to breathe differently whilst in a corset, but for me its no issue as I naturally breathe more from the top half of my chest. So since I already breathe shallowly it makes absolutely no difference to me. My corsets are also custom made to my measurements and so I can take a full deep breath in them if I need to do so. :)
Oh forgive me for trying to make sure someone stays safe! No its fine, I'll stop and let people hurt themselves doing something which could be done without hurting them. And just let corsets continue getting a bad name due to people using them incorrectly. Sure. That's much more responsible.
Scarlett O'Hara revisited! Remember the scene in "Gone With the Wind" where Mammy is lacing Miz Scarlett into her dress to show off her 17" waist? Incredible the things women have put up with over the years in the name of beauty ... matter of fact, still do ...
the 17" waist was a Hollywood fantasy, next to no women actually did that. Corsets on average would reduce the natural waist down 2-4" and the natural waist was around 27".
@@erwin669 Agree. I used to have a 26" waist when I was in my 20s, and I reckoned I was too fat. Barbie is a totally unrealistic representation too - no real woman has a shape like hers.
women back in the day: this is normal for us, we've spent more than 10 years rationing thanks to the war and great depression our waists are naturally tiny We modern folk: Yikes can you breathe... They: Yes cause we buy corsets that properly fit us and don't get them from Wish
Fascinating (from a fashion history POV) archival footage...but the extreme 'hour-glass' figure (waist shrinking) enhancement (via the corset) is a bit disturbing to this viewer...what women had to endure to appear attractive according to some mens' taste! Fortunately, wmoen who wish to modify their figures have far more comfortable 'shapewear' alternatives (as opposed to more 'radical' surgical or dietary ones).
***** Before telling me off in such detail i would like to point out the key word ''look'' in my comment. I never said they ARE suffering if they were, clearly the model would look uncomfortable, and im also well aware that they wouldn't make piece of clothing to be worn the whole day painful. I merely said just from how close the corset is to the ridge of the ribs, makes it look like there would be constantly rubbing and causing discomfort when she moves.
lexi neal Nope. My natural waist is 26" and usually I don't reduce by all that much. I can reduce down (for very short periods of time) to 20" but mostly only go for a 2" reduction as my hips are 12" bigger than my natural waist so 2" waist reduction makes them even more curvy looking - they'd be 14" bigger than my corseted waist. Current world record is Cathie Jung with a 15" waist. I don't wish to train that small myself.
I've run to catch a train whilst corseted and was no less out of breath than I would have been if I hadn't been wearing it. I was running late that day so actually had to jog and then sprint from my home (usually a 20min walk) to get to the station on time. I managed to get there in just over 10mins. The corset was custom made to my measurements though and so it fitted me spot on everywhere and didn't compress my ribs at all. Just the waist.

I'm pretty sure any woman at a healthy weight would pull this look off perfectly fine without the cinching and the padding. To me there's no denying that pulling it all in like that is less than good for the human body. It doesn't matter if all the "harm" that's done is having decreased circulation for a few hours; that isn't technically nothing. 9-9 I mean, I love corsets and I think the model's severe look is cool and all. It's just common sense that you give your organs room to function.
***** there r two possibilities by which women agreed to wear that near suicidal thing.1)they were really dumb which cudve been true coz most of em were uneducated.2) men might've lured them into wearing it which is a way of forcing
***** heterosexuality?where did that come from?im talking about an undergarment here....& besides these things were b4 the 20th century where women didn't have any type of right or voice to make a "choice" here.
The final look of this is not dissimilar to what a victim of anorexia nervosa appears to have been reduced to at the final stages of the disease. When brain cells are damaged and there is no way of return. The difference is that the rest of the woman looks healthy as far as the non constricted parts of her body go.Mind you this is a model who even back then they were standing 10 to 15 cm taller than the average young woman of the day, offering a rather cringeworthy exaggerated look.Just for some food for thought as to what impossible standards were and still placed in front of women ,how similar they remain but for the different means of achieving them.
@@leenmattar3983 the corsets today are safer thing is some may not know that people wore corsets loose back them it was made for a frame media the one told them to wear it tight.
The corset disappeared while there was a shortage of servants. If all women must wear corsets then half of women being servants. Or alternatively, women must live in a community. A completely different possibility is that the corset changed so that women can wear it alone.
Women of all classes wore corsets, either you learned to lace it yourself, which is not hard at all, or you got a family member to help. It did not "disappear because of the shortage of servants"
