This (no metal) method suites those who like to build fence in place with plastic into 1/4 inch substrate comprised of (1/8 Balsa & 1/8 Cork). This (dry fit) model component basically completes all the primary build structures on section one - The HO Scale 'River Road' Diorama Shelf Layout.

I've been going back through all the old videos because I miss Glover Road. And watching that final ops session when all the former scenery was being moved off the layout on that flat car made me kind of sad, so to see that dozer at the beginning of this video put a smile on my face. Seems like it was yesterday when you were announcing Glover was coming to an end but that dozer reminded me that River will still have some DNA from Glover. It's been pretty fun to go hey I remember that tree or that dumpster used to set next to the old cold storage.

Nice fence, tarp really makes the overall fence come alive. I have done similar fences for Formula 1 racing tarps using printed parchment to embed admarks, then going over with a wash to bring out the text within the paper. Excellent job. Talking about the airbrush vs spray cans. For those on the fence. You can use just air to move and push your wetter paints, to age areas. And you can also use water or solvent, to partially expose areas of interest. Also use 3/10 saline mix using acrylic, to pull color in, giving an caustic, chemical-burn look as well. Again, great job.

Looks good. I used wedding veil also on my "N" scale layout which was built about 6 years ago. The veil was attached to a large frame I made and all of the cuts were on the bias (45deg) so the chain link looked like the real thing. After l painted the veil a flat silver while stretched on the frame the fence was cut at .75" which was about a 8 ft high fence. My fence posts were 2" finish nails and the top if the nails l flattened out and drilled a hole in it for the top rail to go through. My top rail was .032 safety wire that l pulled straight. The veil was attached to the fence posts with carefully applied ca glue and as for the length of my fence posts after the posts were installed on the area of the layout l did not have any wobble at all in the fence. This system does work better than plastic fence material that others use.

Nice looking stuff once again and glad you inform people on color changes for different angles. Also you have more restraint than I . The work and materials is your choice , so if you want to work with plastic oh well. Also the same type materials bond and join together better...common sense. Anyway the warehouse's paint is looking good.

First thank you for this channel, so glad I found you. I am back in the hobby after a 30 years hiatus flying helicopters, airplanes and jets, still doing it but missing the creativity of model railroading. I had planned on a grandiose layout but your channel, which I have avidly watched for the past few months, every single episode (almost), has made me think twice. Why not do a few shelf layout, that I will join in the end but allowing me to tackle many unrelated interesting scenes? Not sure how it will go but I have plenty of new techniques to try out thanks to you. Sorry for the lengthy comment, I could have rambled on a lot more but lets say I love the trees I am building following your techniques and my (poor) abilities.

It's called tulle and pronounced like tool. I would never use plastic for my fence posts. That looks extremely difficult. My soldering skills are much better than my gluing skills so I'll just use 18 gauge wire. When using wire poles and rails you can just use your soldering iron and melt the bottom instead of trimming. Cheers from eastern TN

Indeed Boomer, those fences indeed aren’t aluminum but steel sendzimired with a zinc coating. The dull grey look is the zinc layer patina. Love how you built this fence, the shadow effect you achieve with the airbrush is absolutely awesome, and oh so simple. Those tarps, what can I say more? The true epitome of the postage stamp scene?! Another real to life looking project for River Road! The wind blown tarp really sets the scene. Also, the shading of the fence from black to silver creating shadows is exactly how chain link fencing really looks. Amazing how you know to do that! Boomer, I keep a list of all the numbers and sizes of the Evergreen products you show. But is there a specific size overall that you generally use to confirm to the HO scale? CHEERS
@boomerdiorama
@boomerdiorama 2 года назад
Evergreen has product listed specifically to HO Scale in terms of dimensional standards. On the other hand, most of it is sized to any scale depending on the ruler. I always take my HO Scale ruler with me to the hobby shop, etc., to scale out the size in the package to make sure. It only needs to bee close for me if I am not working from a scale drawing which would demand otherwise. ;-)

No idea why this popped up. I have done real fencing and, with modern laser levels, post hole diggers, etc, you can build real world fences like this that look unrealistically real. Takes a couple of years, even more, for mesh to stretch, occasional post get bumped out of true, concrete to get stained. Concrete gravel boards are a problem because they stop hedgehogs from moving between gardens.

Does the tulle come with different size holes or is it all the same? Just wondering because I don't want to buy some and it's hole size be more akin to 1:35 scale rather than HO scale. I'm guessing its probably the same but guessing has got me in trouble before. Using the crepe paper to simulate tarp was a surprise to me because I've seen tissue paper used mainly as a material for making tarps. This is a different effect than laying over covering something wanting the tissue paper to take the shape of what you're covering more and what you're doing here you want it stiffer so it looks more tight since its hanging vertically. Looks awesome. 👍

Why not super glue?
@boomerdiorama
@boomerdiorama Год назад
When it comes to plastic to plastic solvent is the correct adhesive. Super glue has no "shear" strength because it is a "mechanical" bond, not a chemical bond like solvent is. Models that are built with Super Glue tend to fall apart after five years as the CA turns brittle. It doesn't melt or weld the plastic together. On the other hand, CA (Super Glue) is great for metal to plastic, wood, glass etc, if the surfaces are textured and not glassy smooth.😁
