It got really bad after the early 2000s. You don't own a car anymore, the car owns you. On the flip side... The problem with owning older cars is the quality of the replacement parts is getting terrible. It's almost like it's on purpose to sabotage older cars and try to force you into the newer cars.

@Callsign_Sturm

@nathanielmorey2800 Yeah and sellers know this so it's hard to find non OE quality parts. Most cars will last an extremely long time with basic maintenance and derusting measures. Shocks and suspension parts are consumables. Exhaust and cat is a consumable. O2 sensors and mufflers are consumable. Engines and transmissions can be rebuild cheaply and correctly with RU-vid and some manuals. Have a cheap backup car, keep it reliable and rust free and then work on your primary when it goes down.

The real issue with new cars is the total loss of privacy. If you have a newer car, you are being monitored. Period. Most people are clueless about it. Naomi Brockwell covers it pretty well on her youtube channel. It's one of the reasons I'll never buy a new or newer car (that plus all the useless safety features and the prices).

Safety features aren’t entirely useless. I have a 53 year old sports car. No crumple zones. There’s no way in hell I’ll drive it with my children inside. As for prices, they haven’t changed. I look at my sports car as an example. Costed my father 2 years wages for the low end of the income spectrum when new, 3.3k at the time. If I look at a modern mustang what do you know roughly 2 years wages for the low end of income earners, at least in my state. It’s generally the same deal with other vehicles. They didn’t get more expensive, your money just became ever more worthless over time.

@johnroberts3824
@johnroberts3824 Месяц назад
@@Bonanzaking I won't quibble about prices, you're probably right about that. But regarding safety the only useful "modern" features are crumple zones, air bags, rear cameras, and antilock brakes. Three of those have been around for a pretty long time now, with rear cameras being more recent. And rear cameras are really only necessary in vehicles with poor rearward visibility like pickups and large SUVs. In a sedan, a rear camera can actually be less safe because of the limited field of view. People will depend on the camera instead of looking all around while backing up. I have a rear camera in my car but I don't even use it when backing up. I don't need sensors all over the car to make up for poor driving. Before changing lanes I check the blind spot. When backing up I check all around and then go slow, and I continue looking rearward as I back up, turning my head both ways to make sure things are clear. I don't need emergency braking because I pay attention. Most of the newest safety features are to protect against unsafe drivers, but I'm not an unsafe driver. They add cost and complexity that I simply do not need or want. But far and away the absolutely worst part of new cars is the loss of privacy. People seem all to willing to trade privacy for convenience, but I place a much higher value on privacy. A value so high that I will not buy the product.

I've got an '02 camry, and a '99 corolla, and I'm keeping them both. Easy to maintain on my own, wide parts availability, cheap to own, they still achieve really good mileage, They both still drive like new, and everything still works! Not one bit of rust, either! They've saved me so much money since I bought them 4 yrs. ago. New cars are so much more fragile, and complicated. I have a coworker who owns a '19 TSX, and it's already giving her all sorts of problems. BUT she never allows it to build up enough oil pressure before taking off like a speeding missile, and she never maintained it properly either. So the blame falls mostly on her.

Here's what I will say working as an engineer at a tier 1 supplier, but my only mechanic experience is from building karts. There are issues with modern cars, but id say a lot of it is consumer driven. Here are the most common mistakes I see people make: 1. Don't get upsold on stuff you don't need such as, sport trims ,AWD, air shocks, etc. These add complexity and inefficiency that most people just don't need. For example, the V6 has 50% more ignition coils and spark plugs vs inline four version. All these sports and luxury packages are not designed with repeatability and simplify in mind because its assumed the buyer is rich or foolish enough to not care. 2. More efficient cars are out there, you just have to consciously look for them. Engines have gotten a little bit more efficient, its just people "spend" that efficiency on more power, a lager car, etc so the end up getting the same. The 2018 Honda Fit gets 33mpgs city and 40mpg highway - no hybrids needs. 3. If you want to know what is cheap to own, repair, etc, look at what companies buy for fleet cars.
@MrOiram46

Yea, getting that car paid off is such a good feeling. And then after a month or two without that several hundred dollar a month payment you suddenly realize just how much that one payment really bites into the discretionary income. Following a divorce I had to go into bankruptcy and the trustee only left me with about $125 in discretionary income a month. At that point I just grew an immense appreciation for simplifying my finances and learned firsthand how all those loans and credit cards just slowly bleed you dry. Once you get rid of all that stuff you can do this extraordinary thing called, "Saving Money!". And when you get to the point of saving enough money to have about 3-6 months of living expenses on hand it's like a great weight of stress lifted off your shoulders. Now if something like, "Needing to buy a $1400 catalytic convertor for my truck...", comes up I know I have that savings I can lean on rather than digging myself further in the hole with a credit card.

Okay, BMW Tech from Germany here, I’ve owned an E36 and two E46s. None of the BMWs I owned have ever forced me to get rid of them because of some kind of a mechanical fault I couldn’t fix. My 328i had 340,000 Kms on it when I got rid of it. Why did I have to get rid of these cars? Rust. All of them. I toyed with the idea of getting a E9x 3 Series - but even I as a BMW Technician do not have the nerve to be replacing timing chains, VANOS Solenoids, Injectors, and other extracts from the litany of items that go on those. I won’t even start about some of the shit I see on a daily basis - and BMWs contrary to belief are actually easier to wrench on and diagnose than some other Euro stuff. But let’s just say that I spent 2 hours of my life putting in a motor mount because it has two AC lines routed over it for some reason. A motor mount! Those things are DESIGNED to go out eventually. In the end I got myself a ‘13 Yaris with the 1.33 vvti. Why? That car just works. Yeah some of them apparently burn oil, but it seems to be isolated to cars that were run with too thin oil or too much city driving. I put 30,000kms on mine a year and every 10k it gets fresh 5W-30. Hasn’t skipped a beat ONCE. No electrical gremlins, no mechanical issues, just put gas in, oil change every 10k, a yearly inspection for other stuff, and that’s it. For comparison, on my Toyota swapping a motor mount is a case of supporting the engine from the bottom and undoing a couple of bolts and replacing the damn thing. At the end of the day, it’s primarily piss poor design that makes modern cars a pain in the neck to do anything on

I believe part of the problem is consumers. Most people don’t buy cars anymore they lease them drive them for a few years then trade it out for another shiny new car. These companies have no incentive to build a reliable car. It’s a vicious cycle. As much crap a Jeep gets; for what it’s worth I’m glad I got the base model with manual doors and locks with analogue displays. The only electric crap is the federally mandated screen for backing up. Fortunately I only drive it to the train station down the street and take that to work. I’ve got no interest in getting a new car after this is payed off anytime after that. Payments and dealers suck. My whole family has only bought new cars when the old ones finally died and my old 01 f-150 died earlier in the year; I’m going to do the same for this car.

Cars were NEVER consumer friendly. They were worst in the past and have gotten better with specific manufacturers. It was never about solving problems or doing business. ‘We can put 5 screens in the car because they are cheaper than servomotors/steppers for gauges’ ‘We can create this EFI system instead of improving the distributor because using chips with a constant failure rate is cheaper than a better cap’ ‘We have a new turbo 4 to replace our reliable V6 with some boost, but we have to make it an open deck design to save $3 in aluminum per block, not caring that it will cost us millions of dollars in lost reputation once head gaskets start failing’ The people who propose those decisions will get promoted and paid handsomely every time.
