Modern Folk Quartet (MFQ)
Chip Douglas, Cyrus Faryar, Henry Diltz, Jerry Yester
This Could Be the Night
Produced by Phil Spector, Arranger: Jack Nitzsche
Recorded: Gold star Studios, October,1965
Henry Diltz: ... We went into the studio and cut a song called "This Could Be the Night", a Harry Nilsson tune, and it had the whole Spector "wall of sound". Part of the sound was to have lots of guitars, lots of drums, lots of bass - not just one of everything. So anyway, we recorded this song, and Brian Wilson came down when it was finished. He'd sit in the control booth wearing pajamas, robe, and slippers, listening to the song over and over and over again. We didn't talk much, but we loved having him there, cuz we loved the Beach Boys. Everything seemed to be going real well, except that Phil never put the song out.

This should have been one of the biggest hits of the 60s.

When I was younger I was late to school many Mondays because I stayed up late to listen to this song on KROQ. Great memories.

Hard to believe in this year 2022 that all these exuberant young people in this video are pushing close to 75 years old.

Damn... the things Spector could do with echo. This might be his most genius production and that is saying something.

i used to think this track was influenced by pet sounds-era brian wilson. lol. what did i know? i was younger. spector had SUCH AN IMPACT on wilson's production. this track shows it so much more than others, i think. there was good music before, good music after, and good music now, but this was truly the golden era of music.

I met the legendary Rodney Bingenheimer last night backstage after our Blondie/Devo concert at the Greek. My son was thrilled to meet Clem Burke, and I was so happy to meet Rodney! I started listening to him on Roq of the 80's, 106.7 KROQ in 1982. I spent many sleepless nights listening to Rodney, "This could be the night," on my Sony Walkman. I sang a little bit of it to Rodney last night and he reminded me it was MFQ and mentioned Phil Spector. Thanks for posting, wonderful video!

The fact that this song didn't come out is ridiculous and Phil Spector messed up by not releasing it. If Brian Wilson likes it, it's probably a gem, but I guess Phil didn't realize that.

Thank you for posting this! I guess I can say that I lived in the "good ol' days." The days of great and innovative music. The days before Spector and Yester turned out the creeps that we know them to be. And the days of great songwriters like Harry Nilsson. I noticed in the comments that some people asked where they can obtain this. This track is available on a Spector collection ( "Essential Phil Spector," maybe?) and on "Gotta Get Up," a great 24 song collection of Nilsson songs covered by others.

I have this show on VHS. The performances are excellent. My version is hosted by Chuck Berry who introduces each act. Ray Charles, Jan and Dean, The Ronettes, Leslie Gore etc. It does not have all these great behind the scenes footage. It looks like everybody is having such a great time, and imagine Phil Spector got thru the whole show without killing anybody!

There's a live version recorded at the Ice House by the MFQ on a CD called Live At the Ice House 1978 that iTunes has. Not quite as much "Wall of Sound" but not bad.

Well, he turned up the reverb to get that ''wall of sound.'' I never could understand why that was such an accomplishment. Most of the words were inaudible. Do they matter? Hard to tell. This kind of song is so below what MFQ was capable of. I suppose that means I liked then when they were folk. And their sophisticated harmony was beautiful.

Eddie Hoh, drummer for MFQ, isn't mentioned here. Did he play on this, or did Phil use Hal Blaine? Eddie was a session drummer himself; he could certainly handle this quite easily.

Phil Spector deserves to be screwed (figuratively, of course) just for not promoting this. He favored certain artists (ronettes, Righteous Bros) and ignored others.
