Modern Gaming is Bleak 

Not purchased any new generation console yet, and I don't think I will. Got really into switch and the obscure amount of indie, steam, pixel games you can purchase for it. Fantastic lil system.

From several comments I found people say Modern Gaming declined in 2015 due to Monetisation.

You are actually completely wrong in regards to older consoles lifespan of support once the newer systems come out. There are many examples, Master System support carried on for nearly 10 years after the Mega Drives release in 1988. The SNES had support for 4 years after the N64 release. The PSone had support for over 5 years, PS2 many years, PS3 many years and PS4, of course, a lot of years too. The one exception I can think of is the Xbox being binned off right after the 360 release.

Ps3/360 generation was peak gaming downhill ever since

I remember the jump to the 360 and PS3 and it was a real wow moment. With the current ones, I really expected to notice a difference, but I didn't. It felt like a TV upgrade was more important than the console.

Sold all my retro gaming stuff recently to de clutter the house, but invested in a handheld retro gaming device to play all the classics again! Never really got into modern gaming after XBox360, which I still have.

The switch is technically 9th Gen as well. The Wii was 7th against, 360 and PS3. The Wii U then launched earlier to beat PS4 and XBOX one to market. As it flopped so massively they then launched Switch in 2017. In my book that is 9th Gen.

Ff7 rebirth, stellar blade, cyberpunk. I could go on. Plenty of good games on ps5. Sure some are available on ps4 too but the experience is better on ps5 with graphics, lack of loading, controller, etc.

The PS2 was the golden generation. The 3D games were good and 2D games like Viewtiful Joe showed you could have the best of both worlds! Plus there were all those arcade and 16-bit compilations! Glorious!

I feel the same way with modern games I also don’t like the fact almost ever game has to be some massive online thing I mostly enjoy playing single player games in my own head space and one thing that really annoys me with modern gaming is on Xbox one and Xbox series X to play a Blu-ray movie or a DVD you have to download an app on the console and that often needs updates too whereas on the 360 I could just put in my DVD and it would load and play instantly

I'm not going to disagree with you with the SBMM, I'd rather play against people at my skill level and than shit all over people one game, then go 0-10 the next, that's just not balanced IMO. There is no place for pay to win aspects in games, FC / FIFA is the main one where is absolutely kills my drive to play the game

I gave up with consoles on the launch of the Xbox one and the PS4 like you for me the golden era was the Xbox 360 and PS3 which I still collect on both for my best move ever was moving to pc , such a more diverse amount of games and developers to be had in pc gaming now there's no going back for me sadly

There's never been a better time for gaming. We have easy access to decades and decades of games from the past. You can emulate GameCube games on your phone. Also, there are many free to play games that you can spend dozens of hours on with your friends. Of course, there are a lot of bad AAA games. Those are extremely ignorable, and you can play hundreds of games in the meantime before another truly great game comes out.

If I just had the PS2 to play today I'd be more than happy

I think games have almost too much like real life. I play games to escape reality, I want to know that I'm gaming which is why I have gone back to older games on the PS2 and even the Gameboy. I am thinking of nothing else other than the gaming whilst I'm doing it. Also, i don't have to wait for a game to load / update or download, stick in a disc or cartridge and away you go. Gaming has become too complicated, the simplicity of older stuff is the best and most fun part.

I Love the older generation but now I've got a series x and especially with game pass it's an amazing experience but I can't wait for GTA 6 it will be amazing don't care how big the game is

I prefer to remain optimistic, and see that there are great games that have come out in the last few years, such as Persona 3 Reload and Resident Evil 4 Remake, as well as a Ender Lilies (a dark fantasy metroidvania) which is a free PS Plus Essential game this month, and are all brilliant I enjoyed playing a eighth generation title, Subnautica, on the PS5, it os one of my favorite games of all time, and it is even better on the current gen consoles

I would play more of the modern stuff on my pc with Microsoft game pass and some PlayStation games would appear on steam after a few months but building my xbox 360 collection and xbox one with my only go to on Nintendo is the gameboy as still got the same one when I was a kid

Agreed I spend more money picking up retro consoles and games now..I miss the lil game shop I use to go to in dublin..i miss the people and friends I made there in the 90s..i miss the art..the posters the cool standees..the new types of games and chances they used to take with new platforms..and the fun of old games before all the politics..I watch more about retro games on you tube then actually play any new ones..my ps5 is an expensive ornament..asides from the new space marine 2 game..black myth (which annoyingly has no disc release) and gta 6 I'm not looking forward to much else tbh..regards from Ireland man.

Agree with a lot of this, but the main thing that is ruining modern gaming for me, along with tv, and a lot of movies too, is all the woke crap being shoehorned in. I want to play games that take me away from all the political rubbish going on in the real world.

Totally agree.. Last great generation of games that grabbed you're attention for more than 30 mins was PS3 / 360 generation. Ps5 and X gaming looks great but overall Meh

Still plenty of games to play, you just need to stop looking at the crap the western AAA industry is shoveling out. Trails though daybreak, Unicorn overlord, Stellablade, Tevi, shin megami Tensei V Vengenance, FF7 rebirth, Tsukihime, class of Heros 1+2, System shock, Still Wakes the Deep--- Thats just what I've bought this year so far. Romancing SaGa 2, Dragon Quest III HD, Metaphor: ReFantazio, REYNATIS, Ys X: Nordics are almost certain buys

I don't entirely agree: it's easy to cherry-pick by excluding Switch when, as you acknowledge yourself, it's either wholly or somewhat resistant to most of the problems you mention. But people have always been inclined to do that in console debates - Nintendo has historically been easy to exclude on the excuse that, say, they alone have a cartridge-based system, or because they released new hardware late or early in a generation... what happens is, they innovate and others follow. But we could also mention the Steam Deck here: huge range of games, and in terms of capability, a real halfway house between getting the latest gen's PlayStation or Xbox and diving into PC gaming proper. I'm curious as to how that will affect all the other console companies going forward. As far as the number of games is concerned - how many games do you honestly expect to buy each month? Even if you're minted there's always a limited to how many you can actually play meaningfully...

Not to mtention the activist infection in 'modern gaming' that has ruined alot of AAA games.

Modern gaming might be bleak if you only play one console at once and a few games here and there, for me I mostly play PS5 because of its backwards compatibility with PS4 and many games coming out every month although they aren’t all triple A, I have just as many PS4 games as PS5 ones because I was late to the PS4 back in 2019, I only got the PS5 in late 2022 and now I have over 100 games total and most I haven’t even started yet, you’re probably limiting yourself too much if you’re not enjoying the said consoles with good games :/

That is the point i feel like this current gen has reached its peak, and the games are TERRIBLE. it has gotten so bad it is why the retro market has exploded over the last few years not cause of pre nineteen but also cause nothing good is really coming out with a few exceptions. this gen has been the lowest the industry has been since the crash of 83.

Modern gaming is pain in the ass, love 360

The only game I've looked forward to playing on ps5 was gt7 and even that was mehhh, kinda made is regret getting a ps5. SBMM ruined online gaming completely, you used to meet loads of random people online and have a good laugh but now it's just awful Haha especially cod felt like a mobile game when I opened that up for the first time just shoving the battle pass in your face and random packs

I used to drop £500 the first day on fifa 15,16 and 17 after fifa 17 I stopped buying them

Install times, HD space and updates all to play a half finished game riddled with defects that make it unplayable. 👍

Modern gaming is only bleak for those with narrow tastes and only play crap like COD. Just this past 2 years we've had - Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth - Persona 3 Reload - Alan Wake 2 - RE4 Remake - Like a Dragon Gaiden And tons and tons of indie games, and upcoming releases. You can emulate anything older, there's never been a better time to be a gamer. The PS4 generation was incredibly dry before like 2017 and the PS3 generation was full of brown generic fps games (not to discredit the bangers that did come out). People just need to realize their tastes are narrow.
