Eco-Friendly Luxury Home Carved into Mexican Mountains
This innovative project in Morelia, Mexico, seamlessly blends modern living with a rugged natural landscape. The residence, named Casa la Roca ("Rock House"), embraces the concept of harmonious integration.
Carving a Dream Home
Construction presented a thrilling challenge: incorporating the house into the complex environment of the surrounding rock mountains. Two levels were built directly into the rock face, while a third level appears to defy gravity, suspended from support columns. This creates a visually stunning illusion of the home floating amongst the peaks.
Sustainability at its Finest
Casa la Roca prioritizes eco-friendly living. The extensive glass facade, combined with a strategic orientation towards the sun, maximizes natural light and heat, reducing the need for conventional heating systems. The home boasts additional sustainable features like a water recycling system, solar panels, and a complete home automation system.
Prime Location, Breathtaking Views
The property sits within a prestigious 6-hectare enclave featuring just 10 residences, nestled amidst a Jack Nicklaus-designed 27-hole golf course. The impressive terrain boasts a massive rock formation dominating the landscape. The residence itself enjoys panoramic 270-degree views encompassing lush greenery, the city outskirts, valleys, and mountains. Remarkably, 90% of the flooring utilizes the home's natural rock foundation.
Balancing Strength and Lightness
The architectural vision aimed to create a bold yet light residence that appears to perch on the massive rock. This was achieved by designing the home on the rock itself and on its periphery. The top floor features a clear span of 26 meters supported by strategically placed beams tucked away from corners to maintain a light and airy aesthetic. Black glass cladding creates a captivating effect, seemingly disappearing at night and shimmering during the day.
An Oasis of Comfort
The ground floor features a self-contained social area complete with a pool, a terrace, and a fire pit nestled amongst the rocks. The expansive 90-meter facade optimizes both stunning views and a comfortable indoor climate. The well-planned layout ensures a sense of ease despite the home's size. A central core incorporates essential living areas like the garage, service areas, kitchen, dining, family room, a breakfast terrace, and a charming garden strategically placed to avoid the rocky formations. One wing of the house features bedrooms, each with private terraces and captivating vistas. The other wing prioritizes social areas, offering a truly exceptional 270-degree panoramic viewpoint.
A Seamless Blend of Nature and Design
The home's meticulously chosen finishes create a sense of the surrounding landscape seeping into the living space. The color palette harmonizes perfectly with the natural environment, allowing the breathtaking scenery to take center stage.
Technology for Sustainability
Casa la Roca embraces the latest advancements in eco-friendly technology. The home features a water recycling system, solar energy for water heating and power generation, and a user-friendly home automation system controlling lighting, curtains, sound, video, surveillance, locks, and more.
