Modern Sonnet 244. The Union of Words.
“Again,” became my go-to rhyme, against
Scant competition. “Apathy,” came close.
The most close. Words, of course could not care less
How carelessly or lazily they’re used.
But if they could! If words could have a voice
To claim that they’d been over-used, dismissed
Because then out of fashion, unemployed
Because of hard-to-find thesauruses,
Would “Wow!” and “Sucks!” and “Shit!” in poetry,
Get picketed as scabs to eloquence?
Before that fine-line-forming factory
Would syllables declare with arrogance,
“
We learned to work together as a team;
Don’t furlough us for each slang phrase again?”
