Your improv was very helpful, showing the different modes you use to play over the changes (using the same scale but different modes). I just started learning to improvise on "So What" using the D & Eb Dorian modes.
Fun trivia: The video game Secret of Mana has a battlefield song with the same dorian progression as So What. Do a search for "Into The Thick of It " and listen!
Hi. Im using a Cebulla Neckstrap, sometimes some pain by using neck strap. Would you recommend the saxholder in 2020 and if yes, is there a better version or smth. Would be glad if could awnser or send a link link of this. Thanks in advance!
@@bettersax Quite true - you probably need scales to be derivative or to copy others. Formal training can teach you to learn to use a typewriter but not to how write a good story. You need to know more than which keys to press. Sure, it works for some, but for most, it just takes you to a plateau and leaves you there. A sax is a vocal instrument. Few great innovative singers start by learning scales - you learn by listening to music!
Oh my goodness! I'm just getting back into it after 40 years and this brings back a lot. Thank you so much!!! I'll be signing up to your classes. Wish I had the internet when I was first learning this instrument. Would have made life so much easier.
I am also in the middle of that one too. I put it down for a while as I shifted to other practice focus, with plans to come back to it. And I will. I need to add this one as well.
As a music teacher myself, thank you Jay for a concise and accurate description of modes and how they relate to chords in improvisation. Very clear and all that is needed now is practice to make it real.
Hi Jayn NO doubt i'll catch your course! but have to keep going with the Pentatonic Pattern. I practice everyday 1h and improoved a lot thaks to your courses. Thanks for your material!
A clear and somewhat stiff way to adapt these modes. But a clear start, anyway. Just try to advance as soon as possible to find these all beginning with the same note, to make them more independent from the major scale.
This sounds great. You do too! Will you have "office hours" or private lesson/Q&A time for your students? How many Masterclasses will you have included?
Really interesting. Modes are in the air. I am currently in the middle of a course (with Trey Gunn of King Crimson ) in modes where we are approaching with solfège. Singing the intervals(I am so far from being a singer). BUT.... OMG..... my saxophone tone is improving exponentially with this! Your coarse looks like the perfect companion to what I am diving into. I am finally comfortable on all Major and minor scales and the practical function of modes is my next target. Intellectually, I know what they are. They are not yet in my fingers or available on the fly while I play. Good timing for me to see this .
Hi. What tenor ligature are you using? And would you recommend buy a better tenor mouthpiece than the yamaha classic mouthpiece ( im playing since 10 month and I'm already far for that time)
What I never seem to learn is how you know what chords to use when playing the certain modes or what notes I can stop on when switching mode. Nobody talks about that in a simplistic way.. do chord notes move away from your Cmaj scale all of a sudden when using a different mode? How can I know this then?
Have been playing alto for almost 11 years. I am studying Mark Levine's Jazz Theory Book. Practical with lots of harmony. Nice course you have. How about publishing a chapter by chapter list so that players can see what they are getting into? Sort of like Amazon's "Look Inside".
This will be on my todo list for sure. Just finished the blues foundation. Maybe I’ll first go through pentatonic and blues foundations again with more depth first. Next month will be my first ”anniversary” with the saxophone, hopefully I will be healthier and practise more next year. I’m still really pleased how much I have learned so far. Thank you :)
As always Jay, you provide concise, clear and entertaining instructional material that is inviting to a wide variety of viewers and players of any level. Having been a music teacher in public and private schools, I wish I had this resource to help my students understand Modal concepts and their uses in improvising. This will be a great addition to my learning library for me to brush up on my skills and hone the rusty spots too. The Music Theory cheat sheet is awesome! I end up usually hand writing something for my students when I was teaching fulltime. I will definitely refer students and players of all abilities and ages to your Instructional Website so they can garner the great knowledge you have put forth! Thanks again and I look forward to seeing where you will take us next on our Musical Journeys!
Oh Jay! What a great video - I am such a dunce! Seeing you demonstrate the mode at the chord change suddenly opened my eyes! It’s taken me years to understand how to apply the mode theory and you have done it in 8 minutes!
I remember when I started playing tenor saxophone, I began learning to play the blues and classic standards. After playing the main tune, I began trying to play the bridges. I simply went with the flow and played. The challenge was to stay in tune and in tempo. Not easy but not a negative experience. How much is the theory program? I don’t have a horn but I do sight reading when I can.
One question Jay, if we start the Dorian mode with a D note over a 2-5-1, isn't that being root dependent? Or the Lydian mode with an F note over the four chord in a C blues?
