Modi's Zelensky Hug I India Walks Tightrope Between Russia, Ukraine & West I Barkha Dutt 

With this visit, India has successfully addressed Western concerns about seemingly sidelining Ukraine in favour of its friendship with Russia, while also asserting its policy of strategic autonomy and neutrality in the conflict. However, expecting the visit to yield concrete results beyond the optics of gestures like hugging and Modi holding Zelensky by the shoulders would be unrealistic. Given its longstanding relations with Russia, India can only do so much. The world must recognize that India will always prioritize its own interests.

Modi is trying to end this mindless war between brothers. If the war can be stopped in this way that is good for the world but bad for the weapons industry in both the USA and the UK.

I wonder how Putian looks at this hug. Could you clarify Modi? Why is Modi poking his nose in a war where it has no influence? Why is Modi making India a laughingstock in the world?

Our PM is perfect in saying that this is not an era of war but an era of diplomacy. He should seriously persuade Putin and Zelensky to stop the war forthwith and withdraw to the pre 2022 February borders. But having started the invasion Putin and Russia should pay reparations to Ukraine for all the destruction caused due to Putin 's war actions.

Indian diplomacy also made a fool of itself in Afghanistan, both during the American occupation and even after its withdrawal. Today, in Bangladesh, it is also confusing. In Ukraine also, it is poking its nose where we have no role to Play. With America, we formed QUAD to protect Taiwan, which says Arunachal is part of China. Modi has made a mess with our Nehruvian non-alignment policy.

What seems paradoxical is only so because we go by the Western construct of "If you are not with Ukraine, you must be with Russia and vice versa". Actually, India has its own interests in both nations and has taken the position that THEY CANNOT RESOLVE THEIR PROBLEM THRU WAR, BUT ONLY THROUGH DIALOGUE & DISCUSSION. When such is India's stand and its readiness to act as an honest broker, why would Narendra Modi not greet both leaders with equal warmth & goodwill. Actually, Russia obviously does not seem to mind. It is America & the West which are acting like school bullies.

What is in a hug. Does one hug a friend and an acquittance in a same way? Modi may not know about Judas, Is his hug with Putin of the same affection as that with Zelensky? If it is the same then Russia has been betrayed by the Prime Minister of India. We Indians are ashamed that our prime minister is playing a shady game. We love Putin and Russia.

Definitely it's a start, but in words of president Zelensky himself today, it's the action that matters not the words,all this talking is just rehetorical, just plain talk because if you listen to what Mr.Zelensky said in his press conference today that he doesn't thinks that Putin respects PM Modi enough so I think he doesn't believes that we can make any difference & in any case what i inferred from his presser today was that he also doesn't finds us credible enough so that we can bring much on the table, he said that all India has to do is to stop buying oil from Russia and then the war will automatically stop, will we do that, can we do that? I also don't think Putin is ready to stop fighting at this moment & even without any support from anyone Ukrainians will keep fighting, so this visit & all is just what it looks like, a mere balancing act, but still they say that diplomacy is an art of impossible so let's be hopeful but i think not much is going to come out of it.
