My most difficult bike build ever.
Full modifications and conversion of barn find 1973 Raleigh Sports into a modern Road Gravel Bike (80% Tarmac, 20% Light Gravel)
I went all out crazy on this build. Exploring insane ideas.
Please, I did this on my own bike that I will ride myself. What you will see would probably not work and safe for anyone else to attempt. The risks are mine to be accountable with.
For more crazy ideas, follow me on FB

I'm not a bike mechanic or builder, but that was really compelling to watch. I intended to skip through it to see the results but ended up watching the whole video! And the fact that you're in SE Asia with more difficult access to tools, parts, and a workspace (vs. in the West) makes it extra admirable. Living in Vietnam, I know what it's like to have to depend on Shopee, etc., for gear. Lol. Awesome job!
@ranzteeezy9716

Living in SEA actually gives you an easier access and Cheaper bike/bike parts compared to the west, because Taiwan and China are just around the corner, I live in SEA too but my parents live in the west so I ocassionally go back and forth, so I can definetely testify to this :)

This should be the top " imposible bike conversion" on RU-vid. As the modern trend is to bring the steel bike vibes with modern tradition, here is the best example of how those fancy bike builders sell a steel frame for over $2k. Maybe that's why they say steel is real...

You worked hard on this... didn't even use a dip to get rid of the paint. I will say to you that this bike is probably 60s (50s design) and, is one of the very basic, heavy, inexpensive commuter bikes - for old boys. The quality of the components is very very low (Raleigh were failing and buying in Japanese pressed parts) There are very many low-priced, used Raleighs with 531 tubing, that are much much better donor bikes for a project. But, looks like you had fun - which is the important thing...

can you explain the headset/seat post clamp trick? what was the problem and how it got solved? also an estimation of total cost?
@AndyEFonYouTube
@AndyEFonYouTube 2 года назад
As noted in the vid, the headset is 34mm, a normal size for modern road bikes using 28.6 mm straight steerer. I wanted to use my modern carbon fork on this frame. However old bikes normally can only accept 25.4mm steerer forks and thus their headset maxed out at 30mm, obviously I cannot fit in the 34mm headset onto a 30mm head tube. The dual seatclamps solved that problem as exhibited in the video and now I can use any modern 28.6mm forks I want. There's no trick for the seatpost, it's just a carbon 25.4mm tube with Schmolke carbon lug. The whole bike cost me $2500 approx all in

Interesting headset hack. Good that you put that caution notice :) I'm not sure about durabilty... Haven't you consider ordering some precision made adapter at some local turner or even worldwide through bike forums etc.? I'd look nicer also and certainly be safer. Also it's really nothing bad in threaded headset(I'd say one need to check the screw of lock nut and main bolt, just like bolts and cap bolt form time to time, so what's the deal) there are available very nice ones, also quill stems can look much smoother than a-head ones(no visible bolts, nice aero curves etc...). I'm not against putting new parts on classic frame(here it's done surprisingly excellent, well done!) but sometimes one need to get this, that if it is classic, than some things are better left classic to be honest.
@AndyEFonYouTube
@AndyEFonYouTube 2 года назад
I did all measurements and the clearance left for adaptation of 34mm cups to 30mm headtube was paper thin. Possibly doable if both the head tube and cups were sent for machining, but I don't normally do that, I always opt to improvise with whatever home tools available. As for durability, that setup remained intact with regular riding even on gravel, check out my other video of me doing some gravel adventures
@ponuryhutnik
@ponuryhutnik 2 года назад
@@AndyEFonRU-vidWell, I get that you had to make this work, and the idea with seat clamps seems so simple but clever, but... 1. It seems for me like you have a nice, perfectly matched by color 1 1/8 inch carbon fork and just have to use it. I'm sure you could sell it and get samethin else(personally I like when fork is in contrast to frame, but still looks good). They harder to get and maybe more money/time consuming, but there are 1 inch carbon forks, also 1 inch threadless headsets and 1 inch ahead stems if really threaded headset doesn't fits your needs(thought that would be the easiest and proper thing to do). 2. Your solution is DIY ingenius but personally I would use it only with bike for local riding/commuting. Puting it on gravel/adventure bike for long distances, if that bolt in the clamp would crack or something else would happen, you might be out of means to repair it, no bike service, workshop nearby, you get the point. I hope you use some threadlock glue for clamp bolts. Before some trip I would probably put some epoxy "metal" glue or smth, to be less worried. 3. I saw the video, I watched it doing something else, and once i saw no top cap I've just thought "well, this guy is more hardcore than me in riding self-assembled bikes", so that seat post/headset thing is just nothing :) Breaking of top cap bolt happened to me once, of course it's not a disaster, but whole headset get loose a bit. ANYWAY enjoy that really nice bike, it took a lot of work/hours.

Raleigh uses the common 34.4mm British BSA threaded BB which is also a standard used by Shimano, so the Shimano BB fits in perfectly. No mods needed

@MrJonas2255 2 года назад
This one is sufficiently new it doesn't use that weird Raleigh TPI shell
@DavidJLevi
@DavidJLevi 2 года назад
Although the diameter is the same, the thread pitch is different. Raleigh used a 26tpi thread pitch rather than the BSA 24tpi thread. That's what the Nottingham factory used if that's where the bike was originally built. I have a 1981 bike from that factory and it has a 71mm wide shell with 26tpi thread pitch for the bottom bracket. I have heard that a 24tpi thread will screw into a 26tpi shell but will jam after a couple of turns.
@psclassy1123
@psclassy1123 2 года назад
I had picked up an original Nottingham Record and tried earlier to fit items on it. Everything was from another planet I learned. Was going to put an Orange Vello threadless BB in it but sold the frame and moved on. It was and interesting bike had I been able to complete it.
