I am a huge fan of Open Source as a tool for development. However, I also believe people's time and effort has value. I do not hold with the NIC's attitude that everyone's designs should be free to everyone. The NIC is not entitled to anyone's work without fair compensation. If someone wishes to make it free, that is fine. If someone prefers to benefit from their work, that is also fine.

@@CaptainXavier Well, lets say. I am against commercialization of the hobby. I like the idea of people coming with new ideas and mods and sharing them with others. My 3d printer and CAD software is just another tool along side the existing epoxy putty and brass tubing; with stl files being the same level as the DIY mod writeup guides that are already shared. I create 3d designs that are built up upon a knowledge base that others have taught to me freely, the ideas don't exist in a vacuum; therefore it wouldn't feel right for me to not give the results back to the community. I find the recent trends of people creating things not to share but instead with the intent to make money, distasteful.

@@adriansue8955 while I am all for sharing knowledge (obviously given that I have a channel dedicated to teaching and a Makerspace that is free to use), I do not agree with you that people's time and effort have no value. Expecting people to give their .stls away for free is like expecting someone to do commissions for cost of materials. Time, effort, and skill have value. If someone has free time and doesn't mind doing commissions for cost or giving away their .stls, cool. That is admirable and awesome. But expecting fair compensation for one's time, work, and skill is not wrong. R&D is expensive. Test prints that fail cost money. Software costs money. Upkeep on printers costs money. It is not wrong to want to recoup those losses. Not everyone has the luxury to give stuff away. I love that I am able to and I love that many others are too, but I would never hold it against someone who isn't able to or who just chooses not to. Telling people they are distasteful for expecting payment for their work is a good way to get someone to stop working. Why should they put in the effort if we constantly tell them that effort has no value?

@@CaptainXavier I will counter with: why do people do mod writeup guides without being paid for them? Time and skill and materials cost went into inventing and testing a mod, yet they are shared freely. Tools and raw materials cost money, yet folks aren't looking to recoup those losses. We do it because its Fun, not business. The implementation of a mod is its own reward for the creator. We are then happy to share the idea with others so they can achieve the same. You speak people not having the luxury of "giving things away"; but an Idea is non-material, when you share it you don't lose it, only other people gain. There is a net positive. I follow the same philosophy with my own 3d printed designs. I create something and my reward is that I can now use it myself. And so can everyone else because I share it. That is the Value. That is enough motivation to Put in Effort and Create. As it has always been, since Before Commercialization. I don't believe money needs to be a motivation for the community.

@@adriansue8955 As I said, if someone is willing to give their time, skill, effort, and money away for free, for the betterment of the hobby, more power to them. I do it all the time. I love doing it. That you do also is awesome. That many people do so is one of the most amazing things about this hobby. But that is our choice. I do not, for one second, believe that I am entitled to the time, skill, work, or money of other people without giving fair value for it simply because I give so much away. It is for them to decide if they want to give it away or sell it. People volunteer all the time but that does not mean that everyone who expects to get paid for work is somehow selfish or greedy. I love fixing computers. I fix my families computers for free. But when I fixed computers for a living I expected to get paid. Also, .stl's are not just "ideas." They required time, effort, skill, and money to create. They have measurable costs and thus measurable value. If some wants to get paid for their work that is their right. Yes, it is awesome when people freely give away their work. That makes them awesome. But it does not make those who don't bad.
