I just completed this heel after purchasing your pattern. This is MY NEW FAVORITE!!! What an incredibly easy heel - much easier than the plain shadow wrap heel that is so hard to close the holes!! No holes at all!! I will be watching all your videos - my new favorite teacher!! I think I will need to join your group here.

I’ve knit many socks with your shadow wrap heel, now top down sock I’m knitting at the moment l’ve done that heel as usual but going to pull it back and follow this modified method. I haven’t had a problem with holes but interested in a better heel fit. Thank you.

Thank you so much for you great tutorial. I used to knit socks on double points. But I have arthritis in my hands and it was getting difficult for me so I switched to 2 at a time on magic loop. I tried a number of different heels and I like your Modified Shadow Wrap technique the best. I’m sold on it.

I just finished mine. I like it. It does the job,but my slip1 knit, pass slip stitch over is very messy. Can you do a knit 2 together there instead? Why is it that one side of a heel looks so much better than the other side? Thank you so much for sharing your videos. You’re a very good instructor and I appreciate them very much so. I learned to knit socks watching RU-vid. Thank you

I think the intention was to have mirroring decreases, left-leaning decrease on one side and right-leaning decrease on the other side. Try doing a k2tog through the back loop?

Cool, was just ready to start a heel and wanted to check your shadow wrap variation, but saw this. I'm working it now. I was having a problem for a bit with the purl below until I switched to wooden needles. I'm using 2 strands of fingering and knit continental style. Seems to be easier now. Can't wait to see how it looks compared to the shadow wrap heel variation. I have problems with pass stitches over when I have double strands, so might do knit together. We'll see. Thanks for showing this new to me knit below and purl below.

When I taught mused to knit socks I used your shadow wrap videos and never looked back. Having tried other heels I just love the simplicity of it. This is super interesting and I love that it can give a slightly deeper heel. I usually add stitches to do this. I’m knitting my current pair with Regis Pairfect, so may not be able to add in the two interim rounds on this pair but I could imagine you could still use the technique for the turning stitches.🧶

Excellent! Thank you! Quick question. If I want to use this as a contrasting heel w/o a line of contrasting yarn in front, can I increase two stitches to either side and leave them unworked until the end, then decrease them out like a mini-gusset?

I just finished making the first half of this heel using this technique and I love it. I, for whatever reason, had a difficult time knitting or pearling into the stitch below, so I lifted the leg of the stitch below and it seemed to work out fine. One thing I like to do is move 2 stitches from the front to the left and right side of the heel stitches. That provides 2 stitches that I can knit when I go around the full sock as it seems to give me better tension between the final twin stitches and the front stitches of the sock. (I like to work on DPN’s so it’s very easy for me to distribute stitches). A question, do you have any tips on how to maintain a nice tension with the twin stitches when making and or resolving them? Your work always looks so perfectly even. Thanks for sharing this technique! Very helpful.

Chilly Dog, thank you so much! I love this heel. Would it be possible to use the pigeon stitch on the back of the heel? I like the thickness because I normally wear boots with my wool socks. Another question: do you have a pattern for boot socks and/or hiking socks?
@thechillydog
@thechillydog Год назад
If you are familiar enough with the stitch pattern you like, I imagine that you could incorporate it into your sock (remembering you still have to do something special with the turning stitches). A different stitch will likely change your gauge though, so the second half of the shaping may be larger/smaller than you want. You can find all of my sock patterns here, shop.thechillydog.com/collections/socks. I wear all of my socks for just about every informal activity (running, hiking, walking, every-day wear around the house...) so I'm not sure what exactly what different characteristics you're looking for in a hiking sock unless you mean a heavier weight of yarn.

I absolutely loved this video and love the heel. I have a question, however. I did my heel in a different color and so how would I do those two complete rounds to avoid getting a hole? I lucked out because the color of my next stripe happened to be the same purple as my heel so I was able to do the instep, but I’m just wondering how you do it if you have different colors? P.S. I am joining your Plus membership today! I’ve been watching you for a while and you are just incredible!!
@thechillydog
@thechillydog Месяц назад
Off the top of my head, I don't know how you would be able to add the 2 extra rounds for a contrasting color heel without A) ending up with a lot of yarn tails or B) getting an odd contrasting band of color across the top of the foot. 🤔

I've been knitting the shadow wrap heel for all my socks, but I have trouble closing the hole. I want to knit this heel into my current sock as soon as I finish the leg. I need to get your pattern though because I need to study it further because I am 77 years old and need to relearn how to knit this.

I just finished my modified short row heel, but had a gap in the corners and it was loose . And wondering, is it possible to do the triple stitch method like you taught in your other shadow wrap heel ? Would it be better to do, to make a tighter heel join? And then how and when would you do the triple part?
@MidwestStitches
@MidwestStitches Год назад
Do you find that this shadow wrap method makes the heel less pointy on the sides? That is what I don’t like about the shadow wrap heel and I’m not sure if there is any way to fix or modify that to make it more rounded around the heel

I do have a question about knitting 2 stitches together rather than slip, knit, pass. Do they lean a certain direction? Is that why you are choosing to use that method to resolve the twin stitch on the knit side? Thanks in advance.
@thechillydog
@thechillydog Год назад
Yes, the decreases on each side slant in towards the center of the heel. I just think it looks a little nicer with how the turning stitches are made.

@lenamd100
@lenamd100 Год назад
Sorry, I'm using google translator. I can tell how I do it. In the heel of a contrasting color, leave the two extreme loops free. Then wait for the loops to use the boomerang in the second stage of the heel.
@lenamd100
@lenamd100 Год назад
That moment when you need to knit in a circle, these side loose loops will allow you to turn in the opposite direction. You can apply any method to them - German, wrap a loop or as in this video.

@thechillydog

The regular twin turning stitches are closely related to lifted increases. For this version the turning stitch is related to a median increase (sometimes known as a k1 below or p1 below).

I usually have to add a little gusset in order to be comfortable. I have a high instep and hate it when it is tight. I think this modified version is better than the usual shadow wrap, but I plan to add a gusset as usual anyways
