It's really heartbreaking when he talked about his grandfather especially until the Croatian War. For those who don't know, his grandfather who Modric talks fondly in this video was executed near their home during the war, that's why he doesn't really want to talk about this.

luka grew up in a warn torn nation. His grandpa was killed by serb rebels, his father was forced to join the family and he was forced to flee. His family only bought their first house when luka landed a 10 year contract. What he has accomplished for his family, croatia, fans all around the world is nothing short of a miracle. Not only is he one of the best midfielders (if not the best), he demonstrates humility, integrity and leadership, leading Croatia (a wartorn nation with only 4 million people) into a world cup final and semi-final. He may never top ronaldo or messi, but he will forever win my heart as one of the true greats in football.

Luka Modrić, one of the greatest midfielders of all time, a humble man and a great professional. Someone we should just pause to appreciate in these last years of his career. His grandfather was murdered by Serbian paramilitaries. His story makes me think of kids in Ukraine, Yemen, Ethiopia and other places where there are active conflicts. Maybe some overcome war and inspire others like Luka, but many will not. Those who commit the crime of aggression in starting needless wars and crimes of humanity in the way they conduct war should face international justice.
