MODS I'VE MADE TO MY WELDING RIG SINCE PIPELINE (UPDATED WELDING RIG TOUR!)

Let’s talk about modifications I’ve made to my welding rig in the last year. Since coming off the pipeline and transitioning from pipeline welding to a local welding business offering services to a wide range of customers a lot of my rig needs have changed. I need more tools on a daily basis as a mobile rig welder than I did as a pipeline welder. I’ve added a few visible things like the gin pole, chop saw, vice, and material rack and a few things that you can’t see.
In this video, I’m doing a walk around tour of my welding rig as it is today on-site. No clean up or prep before the video so you can see how it functions and what it is like on an everyday basis. It’s not the way I would have done it if the welding bed was built from scratch but I do like that I’m able to modify as needed to fit my needs today.

Now this is a real welders bed that’s actually used. Those tricked out custom ones aren’t, they have another truck that follows them to the job to deliver all the rest of the equipment they really need.

Beds differ, often drastically, by use. Pure pipeline welding is not service truck work is not mixed work. Austin made his bed RECONFIGURABLE to any use he has for it which beats maintaining more than one truck.

Certainly some great ideas, my truck is maxed out on weight. I have a welder, air compressor, oxy/acetylene set up, plasma cutter and many hand & air tools. I only carry my picker when I am going to need it. I mostly do mechanical work, but when people see a welder they always find stuff to be welded. I have rigged up several things that I can add or subtract as needed. I will be copying the set up you have for the saw. Thanks!

Its set ups like these that makes you more versatile and more dependable. I have a air compressor and paint gun with a small sandblaster along with my welding rig, gets me more work and i can charge the customer a bit more for a paint job on their fences or rails. Beats calling another guy to outsource the work and pay.

Love that truck set-up Austin - very practical. With the amount of rain we get here, almost every welder goes for an enclosed van - tools don't do good uncovered in our climate - but that truck set up is super cool IMO.

A really slick move could be to make your next bed detachable (heavy bolts, heavy pins, even vertical sockets with pins or bolts so the fasteners never take the bed weight) and have fork lift pockets so you can pick it up. That also wins when you need to replace a fuel pump if you didn't make the bed with an access door over the pump or want that space for something else.

Nice set up brother. But here in Canada everything you do, you have to think about winter. The jack stands you have for example, in the winter it won’t come out until you sledge hammer all the ice off of it. Then you have to worry about the MTO. They pull you over give you a warning first time then next time $1000 ticket.

Got a tip on picking a truck? Do mainly repair and maintenance work on docks and equipment. And I’m starting the journey of building a truck to get away from the trailer set up I currently have. Ideally would want something similar to IC weld but not quite that extravagant. Don’t have all the tooling he does. So I don’t need that big of a bed. Would like a crane or gin pole.

I had my portable welding business from 2007 to 2013. It seemed like my truck was getting cut apart and rebuild every 3 weeks when I got a break between jobs. I thought it was a blessing when I sold my portable equipment in 2013 but part of me wants to jump right back into it. I currently buy and sell crude oil and the money is good but it feels too much like a job anymore. Miss my old days of every days different

Looks awesome. A word of advice, you may want to secure your chop saw with a ratchet strap when it's in transit. I'm not sure if you fall under commercial DOT but they could grab you for an insecure load as most governing bodies don't recognize bungees as cargo securement. No idea what the laws are in your neck of the woods but as a truck driver I use ratchets for everything to save myself a possible headache. Thanks so much for what you do, you helped me realize it was time to ditch the truck and follow my dream of being a welder and fabricator. I finish school next month.
