Conclusion of modular dining area storage benches.
These are modular, free-standing dining area benches with built-in storage. They feature a shaker panel design and have a painted finish. These are simple to build and are a great DIY project to get more storage space in your dining area. These have a built-in look, but are free-standing so they can be moved around to fit different spaces or suit different needs.
The cases are built with MDF, but any 3/4 sheet material will work. I rabbited the ends to increase the strength of the joints and make lining up the pieces for assembly a breeze. The trim is 1x3 primed pine. Everything is glued and nailed together using Brad nails for simple fast assembly. I used poplar plywood for the top to increase durability. The edges of the plywood are trimmed with 1/4x3/4 pine screen-molding, glued and pin nailed on for a durable edge. The top hjnges open with piano hinges. After assembly, everything is prepped using wood filler, sanded using a random orbit sander to 220 grit, and primed. After the primer is dry, I give it a quick sanding again, then spray the final finish with my hvlp spray gun. The finish is a latex, semi gloss paint in white.
