I fired up my oscilloscope to show you some of the basic waveforms you will find in Eurorack VCOs. Let's see what happens to them, when filtered, mixed, bit-crushed, etc.

as someone who just wants to understand the basic of synths in DAWs this was surprisingly helpful.

That was brilliantly useful! Not just for modular synthesis, but really for anyone who uses synthesizers. Plus the visualization was quite beautiful in its own way :) and now, having watch your series on modulars, I really want to start building one!

Thank you! And yes, you should totally get into modular synths! ;-)

Nice conclusion :) --- An oscilloscope is an absolute necessity. In VCR Rack it's even free: you can just use "SCOPE". You can even put in 1000 scopes when needed, all for free :)

I don't know why but these synth module tutorials wouldn't be the same without your accent. I really enjoy listening to it.

Ah, the answer to the question I somehow never asked myself but is really good to know: why do bitcrushed sounds have more harmonics.. Great video!

StarmanDeluxe2001 It's an old Hameg scope. I just filmed it with a camera and the added contrast and some color changes in editing ;)

How do you actually hook up an oscilloscope to your Eurorack system to monitor audio signals? There are tons of videos that suggest using an oscilloscope, but i found NONE so far which explains how do you actually go about that. For example, what I don't understand is what cables do you use. I suppose you simply take the output jack of your typical Eurorack oscillator. But then, you have a 3.5 mm mono jack. Where and how do you put it into an oscilloscope since none of the oscilloscopes I checked has a 3.5 mm mono input. Somebody?

Oscilloscopes usually have BNC connectors for which you can find adapters. I use BNC-RCA adapters on the Oscilloscope side and then connect a 3.5mm mono jack to RCA cables to that and the Eurorack.

I see, thanks! One more question: how do you send the signal from a VCO both to the oscilloscope and the speaker, to see and hear the signal at the same time? Do you use a stackable cable or maybe a multiple module? Do you maybe need a buffered multiple so that the signal doesn't get too weak just because you branch off part of the signal? By the way, I was making fun of your accent in one of my comments few months ago. But after watching all of your videos, I kinda like it. I think, I'll start pronounce "synthesizer" with a "ü" now :D
@tuesdaynightmachines
@tuesdaynightmachines 8 лет назад
+whiterottenrabbit it depends on the signal and how many copies you make, but I've never owned a buffered multiple and never had problems with passive ones. But you're right, you need a multiple or stackcable. I think I'll never get used to the "Sinth" pronunciation :D

I have one more question about oscilloscopes. I bought a cheap 15 Mhz analog oscilloscope. It works quite fine when displaying high frequencies, the picture is quite stable and comparable to what you show in your videos. But when I want to display some low bass signals, I have to adjust the time switch on the oscilloscope in such a manner that when displaying at least two or three wavelengths, the horizontal sweep becomes visible so that the picture starts to flicker and strains my eyes. I can adjust the time swith such that the picture becomes stable again, but then, the ocsilloscope only shows part of the full wavelength, so that I don't have a nice overview of the signal. So, my question is: with your Hameg oscilloscope, did you encounter any problems with monitoring low frequencies and if so, how did you overcome these issues? I hope, I made myself clear, although I am a noob and thus, I am probably confusing things. What I want to achieve is that the oscilloscope picture is always stable, without the horizontal sweep, regardless of the audio signal frequency. Maybe I need another analog oscilloscope? I am aware that a digital oscilloscope would display the signal without any flickering, bit then, I have an ugly digital display, whereas I love the type of displays on analog oscilloscopes! Only when they show a stable non-flickering picture, that is...

16 down 1 to go. Curious what did you use to record your oscilloscope? was ita camera or a direct feed?

Enrique Martinez I just used a camera (Canon DSLR and GoPro) and did some color correction afterwards :)

These waves are so intriguing But can somebody tell me what kind of ocilloscope this is : instagram.com/p/BE1W5pSw5p2/ ?

+heinz schröder just ask the person on Instagram. It seems like any regular scope with an X & Y input though.
