To simply say this, they used Euclid's Division Lemma over Modular Arithmetic to make it easier for negative integers as well. (a congruent to b (mod n)) Euclid's Division Lemma: If a ÷ n leaves a reminder b, and quotient q, then, a = nq + b where 0

Thank you! I spent ALL morning trying to figure out how the R language was coming up with the modulus for negative numbers. Now I know how. Certainty I cannot let a computer language just calculate without knowing exactly what it is doing.

Add r to your number n, n = r + n such that it is divisible by divisor, that -r is your answer

You don't need a formula in this case, it is just zero, since the remainder is zero.

exactly.... the formula only works when the divisor and dividend are different and the dividend is a negative no.

The remainder you get when you divide "a by (-b)" is the same as the one you get when you divide "(-a) by b." Therefore ( a mod -b ) = (-a mod b)

tf...its just plain idiotic....especially the shortcut method....the steps are badly explained...i am pretty sure its not supposed to be hard. i like the series but its just making things hard for people studying it,
