Moen Roman Tub Faucet Dripping Repair

In this video I show you what I did to fix a Moen "Roman Tub" dual handle faucet (Chateu Two-Handle Garden Tub Faucet) that was dripping.
This model, 4902, uses cartridges, so the video shows the process of accessing and pulling the old cartridges and replacing with new cartridges. The cartridges are down pretty far in the valve body, so a special tool is required to get the cartridge nut out. The cartridges I needed were the older Moen 14891, but these are similar to the common Moen 1224 cartridge.
The cartridge nut removal tool, Moen 14272 works with 1224, 1234, and 1248, as well as my old 14891, and probably more. I did not buy the tool. Instead, I made a tool out of 3/4 copper pipe to remove the nut.
The video includes some of my initial research, and how I approached the problem, looking at the instructions on the Moen site, as well as what people were saying on Amazon about the nut removal tool.
This might not be the right way, the perfect way, the way you'd do it, the way a professional would do it, but it's the way I did it, and it happens to have solved the problem. Enjoy!

Excellent advice! Using a long deck screw to remove the stuck cartridge worked like a champ. Just made sure the lifting force from the claw hammer kept the screw perfectly vertical throughout the lift. I can’t thank you enough. Spent hours watching youtube videos of various tools that were incompatible with the Moen 1248 cartridge and had about given up. Your solution was the best of any. Awesome!

God bless you!!! I was about to give up (which I never do) and made all kinds of homemade tools, looked at RU-vid’s until I was blue in the face, but wasn’t sure what brand faucet it was. And then … I decided to use the Google Lens and it instantly told me what brand and model 😁 Then I found your video. You Da Man!!! I’m going to do it tonight after work. I also ordered a WiFi valve to turn off the water. My wife doesn’t do anything fast so it’s just easier this way … LOL. Thanks again!!!

Yeah I got one just like it tysm for posting, unraveled the mystery for me! parts were clean and serviceable, just needed new O-ring. Valves lifted out easily with gentle pressure on the stem extensions, slipped plier under the top nut and gently levered, popped right up. My escutcheons so frozen to pipe after 24 years they won't come off, I saw another post where some desperado sawed em off with a dremel cutter, lol. Nice post for what looks like an easy job but isn't, tyvm!

Measuring the depth that the old cartridges sit down in the valve body BEFORE removing them is a key step. There is basically no way to otherwise be sure that the tab on the cartridge is aligned and seated in the matching notch on the valve body. On the 1248 cartridge the difference in height between aligned and fully seated verses misaligned and not seated is about 2.4mm. I recommend using a digital caliper's depth gauge for all the measurements but a manual one or just a witness mark on a small flathead screwdriver's shaft may work, depending on how good your eyesight is. If you don't get the correct depth all you can do is remove and reinstall slightly rotated until it seats. Trying to rotate the cartridge body while in the valve body is almost impossible even if you can get it to turn because the fit it so tight that you can't rotate it accurately - just getting it to move insures once it does that it will move more than you want. If you find blue deposits on the inside of the valve body, fold a half sheet of paper towel and then roll it up from the sides so one end is the doubled up towel. Work the towel down into the valve body using a twisting motion. Once the towel is fully down, saturate the towel with white vinegar and let is sit for several hours, then repeat the bottle brush cleaning. White vinegar one a paper towel will also remove the blue stain that you might find in the tub if the dripping has been going on long enough. Allow several hours for the project as all the steps can take time - if you're lucky it will all go quick and easy but don't bet on it. A water shutoff can be a challenge to domestic tranquility.

Thanks for making the video and sharing your experience. Interestingly, you mention "getting up the courage" to do this DIY fix; it took me a good month to have the courage to work on mine. All turned out well, except I still got an extremely slow drip, which drives me crazy! I spoke with Moen, and they are sending another pair of cartridges. I get to do this all over again once they arrive. This time, I will measure the depth per your recommendation and hopefully get these cartridges seated correctly.

Just a tip for those who want to use long nose plyers. The standard size is 6" long, and that doesn't work very well. The middle part is too wide. The next smaller size is 5" long and the middle part is more narrow. I have both and my 5" is spring loaded open so you just squeeze and release inside the faucet tube. It works perfectly.

The dripping was happening for a long time before I actually did anything about it. But I hope the video gives you some confidence to tackle the job.

@sengsational Год назад
I just used the "look" of what was showing on top to determine which model I had. As Mike Milner mentioned, "domestic tranquility" is important: you can't just shut the water off to the house for a week and wait for the part to come in the mail!

Hmmm. Not sure how to correct that problem. Broke, as in not holding the cartridge in place, or broke, as in can't turn it, but still holding the cartridge? If the latter, then I guess you're ok, but if the former, I'd say you'd need to get a replacement cartridge nut.
