Mohammed Shafi, well-known music director, arranger and sitar player in the world of Hindi film music.
Who can forget that beautiful creation when Nargis with her stunning looks, and Lata Mangeshkar and lyricist Khumar Barabankvi giving their sentiments the necessary pain, K. Appeared on screen in Asif's Hulchul (1951). The master who made this gem was Mohammad Shafi! Mohammed Shafi was a sitar player, arranging and assisting. He was Naushad's arranger and assistant for almost 14 years.
Mohammad Shafi was born in the 1920s. Majid Khan, his father died when Mohammad Shafi was still very young, and this forced him to start working at a very young age. His mastery over the sitar got him a job at New Theatres. He was married to Zeenat, sister of Vilayat Khan. He assisted in the music of New Theatres, and contributed significantly to films such as Kapal Kundala and Aandhi in the 1930s.
In 1942, he assisted Bashir Dehlavi for Taj Mahal Pictures' Ujala, where the film's protagonist, Prithvi Raj Kapoor, played a sitar player! Mohammad Shafi got his independent break in 1946 with Haqdaar.
He composed for about one and a half dozen Hindi films as a music director and also assisted and arranged and background scores for about five dozen films. He also composed music for two Marathi films.
Mohammad Shafi had an old relationship with Naushad. It is said that when he was assisting Naushad for Mughal-e-Azam, K. Asif used to send a car to pick him up to play the sitar for the background music along with another sitar player, Abdul Haleem Jaffer Khan! It tells about the contribution of Mohammed Shafi to the world of Indian film music.
Mohammad Shafi was going through a very difficult phase in his last days. He suffered a stroke and became almost unemployed. Apart from Mohammed Rafi, no one from the industry came forward to help him. It is said that during this time Rafi visited him and when he left, Mohammed Shafi found a bundle of Rs 10,000 under his pillow! He called Rafi back and thanked him for his gesture and returned the bundle. He was touched by the singer's love and care.
Mohammed Shafi will also be special as he gave Suman Kalyanpur the opportunity to sing "Koi Pukare Dheere Se Tujhe" for Mangu in 1954. He is said to have recorded more songs for this film, but due to some problems he had to leave the film and O. P. Nayyar was brought in. Luckily this immortal lullaby was retained in the film.

Mohammed Shafi left this world on 30th April ,1980.
