So listen up and let me tell you real quick
Exactly what it means for a fabric to moisture wick
Water sticks to a surface if it's hydrophilic
So if you're sweaty get ready for a wet shirt quick
If its fibers are cotton primarily
When it gets wet then it won't dry easily
Technology can stop all that from happenin'
With a phenomenon called capillary action
The same thing that pulls water up the roots of a tree
Is how moisture wicking pulls sweat from you and me
From nature to the lab to everyday life
The elegance of science'll make you stop and think twice
See from the ground to the leaves water travels up trees
Driven by evaporation and we know this
Inspired by that fact moisture wicking jackets act
Through a mix of hydrophil- and hydrophobic
Fibers which alternate and the result is to create
Capillary like paths for sweat to flow
From inner surfaces to outer where evaporation's faster
So you can dry and be good to go
I'm here to tell you that science can be inspired by nature
So sit back and let that fact expand your brain, kid
How many cats you know with a science show
Where they be rapping and explaining?

My colleague kept staying near the fan telling me that is so hot and I had no problems at all. So I told her and showed my base layer to buy this. She replied to me NOOO its PLASTIC! Right... and just because its plastic you wanna stay sweaty and hot since its physical work we do but "understandable". While plastic is made from polyurethane, I can only appreciate the great benefits it has. I also told her that I cannot cycle my 100 miles without a base layer like this. Told her to experiment but I really need to show her this video!

Great video Justin. I agree, it's cool that science can be inspired by nature to wick moisture ...but don't you think it sucks that we have used man-made fibres for this science. Fibres that don't biodegrade and pollute our oceans. This problem can't be removed from the environment and it causes immeasurable damage to the earth and wildlife... not to mention our own health? This leads me to my question, can't we be inspired by nature without using man-made, non-biodegradable fibres? Is there not a moisture wicking alternative that is 100% biodegradable and safe? Doesn't wool have the most complicated fibre structure which wicks moisture naturally and cannot be replicated by man-made fibres? Therefore can we not blend wool with other natural or biodegradable fibres to create a sustainable moisture wicking fabric for our future generations to enjoy, without ruining our planet?

The clothing looks nice, but it fits and drapes like shit. Cotton has a better fit but it lacks the action to “wickify” moisture.

Here's the problem with polyester "moisture wicking" clothing.....the problem is that polyester basically doesn't absorb water at all. So its missing the hydrophilic action. So if you are working out hard your clothes are dry but your skin is wet. Whereas cotton would mean your clothes are wet and your skin is wet. The best option and truly moisture wicking material is wool. Its absorbs water like a sponge by taking moisture straight to the center of the fiber, but the cuticle of the fiber is hydrophobic. This means it can litterally pull the liquid from your skin straight into the material and yet feel dry. Cotton holds 7 percent its weight in liquid but wool can hold 30 percent until it starts to feel wet. It may not dry as fast as polyester, but your skin will dry faster than a polyester shirt. Lastly there is one benefit that wool does that polyester can't. Its also not discussed often. Wool can condition the air before it hits your skin. Imagine a cold damp wind blowing on you. In polyester clothes this damp wind will pass through the material but because it doesn't absorb moisture it will mean that wet damp air touches your skin, but in contrast a wool material will absorb the liquid in the air and actually hold the moisture leaving dry air on your skin. This is why wool is better than polyester in winter. The only benefit polyesyer has is that its much more durable and way cheaper to make.
