@@mrowlsssbonus chest makes the first three minutes of gameplay much less tedious and affects nothing after the first day. One person playing with bonus chest and one who plays without are going to have nearly identical levels of progression after the first day or two, so the bonus chest is not a game changing feature that defines everything currently considered a cheat. Keep inventory changes gameplay throughout the entire course of a world and makes every risk much less of a risk. The only penalty to dying is being forcibly moved to your spawn point. The gameplay is vastly different. This is especially noticeable during the journey back from an adventure. Keep inventory off = going all of the way back to make it home safely with your spoils, which is a journey in itself. Keep inventory on = just die and you’re back at home within a minute or two of deciding that it’s time to head back, losing absolutely nothing

One important thing I want to note is for some people, keep inventory is an accessibility feature. For me it is. I have very limited hand mobility, and playing games in general is hard, but I especially can’t do quick actions. I like the actual hunger element of easy, but die to mobs very easily, then I can’t get back to my stuff before it despawns and that’s no longer a fun challenge, it just sucks. Keep inventory eases the sort of unfair stress of “I physically can’t hit the buttons fast enough” from me.

Minecraft needs to have an in-between setting for losing items on death. Have it work pretty much exactly like the way Core Keeper does it. When you die in Core Keeper you drop all of your items besides what is in your hotbar and the equipment you are wearing. This lets you actually make it back to wherever you died to get your stuff if you die somewhere really far or dangerous.
@headphonesaxolotl
@headphonesaxolotl 15 часов назад
Or subnautica. "You died and lost some belongings." Tools and certain rare things are excluded, but you'll have to go find those diamonds and kyanite you dropped.
@theapexsurvivor9538
@theapexsurvivor9538 15 часов назад
Or factorio/gravestone mods: you leave a body/grave that might eventually be deleted (for Minecraft I'd say 30 mins within render distance should work), but that keeps all your items and allows you to go back to secure them. This also could ensure killing players for their items remains viable on PvP servers.
@SoneNando
@SoneNando 14 часов назад
Yes, one of the bad things about how it works now is that it makes it harder, ESPECIALLY IN THE EARLY GAME (aka, when the game should be easier) to go back and claim your stuff because you lost your weapons, armor and shit
@SisterRose
@SisterRose 14 часов назад
That's a really good compromise. IMO, losing *all* your items including potential netherite tools and armor you grinded for brings absolutely nothing to the game but tedium. But losing some random items in your inventory; chances are there's SOMETHING you spent time mining so it's still a set back and still a reason to go back there. Also 5 minutes is ridiculous, I'd say in over half the situations I've been in it's simply completely impossible to reach your dropped items in time without a recovery compass.

I sometimes put the "keep inventory on" because I don't want to lose everything because I was some mines where it's just not feasible to find my stuff within default 5 min timer. But the keep xp setting feels wrong. I think very least they should separate these two in the settings for more nuanced options. Or preferably some sort of gravestone-like feature where your items don't clutter server and don't de-spawn within 5min of someone loading the chunk despite actual range to the stuff. And then put timeout for that grave with easily adjustable timer. And maybe even put rules if these graves can be destroyed by players, creepers, TNT traps etc. And play with the defaults in those difficulty settings.

I’m honestly okay with this if they ONLY roll this out for Peaceful. Peaceful is kind of like “baby mode” as is, and adding this to Peaceful wouldn’t make much of a difference in my mind, since a lot of other risks are already turned off. If they roll this out on Easy Mode as well though I’ll have issues because that difficulty doesn’t disable any features, it only nerfs them. Taking away a risk so big from Easy is too much of a difference.

So they could make it a gamble: If you die on easy mode, you might only lose your inventory e.g. 1/3 of the time. It would nerf the damage done by dying, while still teaching new players the risks of harder gamemodes. I do think that this mechanic would be hard to communicate though

But why does it matter? "Too much of a difference" is no justification at all, if anything, Minecraft's difficulties should have more differences, right now it's just "Oh yeah certain mobs deal a lot more damage" accompanied by a bunch of niche mechanics like villager conversion that arguably make Hard the easiest difficulty. If you care so much about the challenge, play hardcore mode, because that's the only difficulty that meaningfully makes the game more difficult. Minecraft's difficulty levels are currently so meaningless, speedrunners can change it mid-run (as long as it's not to peaceful) and still get their time on the leaderboard. If your argument is that people shouldn't be able to get achievements you have easier than the way you got them, then that's an issue entirely in your mind. TL;DR: if you care about preserving the difficulty of Minecraft, why do you care what changes easy mode gets? Hard mode isn't changing.

I personally think "when u die, all your items spill on the ground and despawn after a few minutes hurry up" is bad game design, especially if you want to encourage the player traveling very far. I always hated it and always asked for Keep Inventory. I'm not a fan of Keep Inventory being forced off, but I'm also not a fan of it being forced on. most of all, I think it's a crime that Keep Inventory is considered a "Cheat" in Bedrock edition. I think the entire difficulty system should be reworked, so instead of being a single option there's a bunch of separate options, and the current "Difficulty" options are presets. for example you can customize a difficulty starting with the Easy preset but without natural mob spawns*, and a special Death Bundle appears as a block on the ground where you die instead of the default of Keep Inventory, etc * Natural Mob Spawns would be different from Allow Hostile Mobs because mob spawners would still work and structures with mobs would still include them

I have an addon for this on Bedrock and let you say I probably would have actually passed out if my items despawned after that hour of fighting 3+ skeletons every single time I got back to the cave. I was so mad because regardless of what swords and armor I brought from my base, there would be not one, not two, but three witches bringing me to one shot for 2 minutes because cows dont spawn in caves and I really dont want to bring a whole bar of milk into every cave. The skeletons are also awful on bedrock with borderline hitscan and about twice the attack speed they do on java. If you see more than one you have to pray they try to strafe you instead of firing or they can and will hitlock you with their knockback until you die. And of course, they can just... shoot past raised shields. Fun!

I’m willing to have this change as long as they don’t make it so that peaceful and easy are considered a cheat. Because on bedrock I can’t play in normal or hard because of the difficulty curve, it takes away from my enjoyment, but I also don’t want to be punished by losing achievements. I think instead of keeping inventory they need to have parity with Java for healing. Java is easier because when the player gets their hunger bar full their health goes up within a second or so. While in bedrock health goes back up at a speed similar to drowning.

From what I can see, they would be best adopting the Terraria difficulty model there. Making a difficulty and mode slider. Meaning players could choose if they want KeepInventory true or false without being called a cheater. (Wouldn't be surprised if Terraria's Mediumcore came to be because of Minecraft) It would also give the opportunity for players to go hardcore without having a world locked on hard mode. (Just like Terraria's Hardcore is not locked to Master Mode, for instance)

I think this is a good idea; when I tried to get my friend into Minecraft (who isn't new to videogames in general, and who is overall smart and competent) his two biggest complaints were 1) there is SO MUCh to learn for people who haven't been playing for years and learning updates as they come, which makes the game somewhat dense and unapproachable in the modern era, especially in terms of learning where the fun can actually be found/how to progress to get to cool stuff; and 2) so many things are pretty deadly to the new player, especially stuff that doesn't really have a warning (hello Powder Snow), which is exacerbated by number one (i.e. you don't know everything that can kill you and how to avoid it, even stuff like how to best fight/survive groups of monsters) AND then when you DO die you lose basically all your progress (particularly early game) if you aren't able to get back to your stuff quickly. You could argue that learning to navigate back to your death location AND keeping a bunch of resources safe at home for emergencies are both ways to counter this, and I'd agree, BUT those are both things you learn how to do effectively and efficiently only once you are a somewhat experienced player! If you're a new player, you now have to navigate however many blocks far back to where you died, using no or less resources (since you may not have stashed any at home) and possibly without the danger of what you died to actually being gone! And of course, new players are more likely to be playing on lower difficulties anyway. HOWEVER, that being said, I agree with everyone who says it should be a prominent world option rather than an optional cheat; I would just add it should be on by default when you select a lower difficulty, and off by default when you choose a higher one, and then you can toggle it at your leisure from there.
@osku388
@osku388 12 часов назад
I think the expected behaviour is that you do lose your stuff when you die so it should only be easily an easily visible option but definitely not on by default. Especially if it would be bundled with difficulty, then when a new player is feeling a bit cocky playing on hard, they die, think "ok, lets play on easy first" and change difficulty but obviously don't expect it to change core mechanics so it's terrible design
@blazernitrox6329
@blazernitrox6329 11 часов назад
On the one hand, I'd argue that realizing you should stockpile some resources in case you die and need to go get your stuff is less a problem for the inexperienced and more a problem for people who don't plan ahead. On the other hand, it's not really a mechanic in and of itself as it is a consequence of how the game is designed, so I'm not surprised that a lot of new players get screwed by it. I wouldn't mind if they did something like Terraria and made a version of keepInventory the default and let more hardcore players turn it off at their leisure, although I also think they should have some other penalty for dying so it doesn't just become a free TP home.

Keep-inventory will also be moved to this setting category. Customizable difficulty settings, like for when someone wants to play normal Minecraft but without the monsters. Especially because of how the achievement system works on bedrock, having keep inventory literally eliminates all risk in the game. Going to an ancient city to find the silence armor trim? No risk. Going to a bastion to loot it and get your achievement? No risk. Fighting the wither? No risk. Nothing would have any risk and would make everything easy. I think though as a compromise we could have the Java system as well where achievements are tied to the world and happen no matter what game rules are applied.

Idk maybe this is just me preferring terraria over minecraft again, but I feel like the fact that so much of minecraft's "challenge" relies on inventory management that this is actually an argument is... a little damning. Like, terraria has no durability, and keeps inventory on death by default without removing advancements for it, and it's still plenty challenging and engaging. Are some of these people trying to say that minecraft has so few engaging features going for it that it's imperative to (checks notes) make players waste time searching for their items after they die so they can't actually complete their goal for a little longer? (And it's even worse than terraria mediumcore... At least there your items dont despawn. Seriously, it's THAT important to prioritize the risk of losing your items for good??)

I think the big difference with Terraria and Minecraft that a lot of people forget is that they are in no way the same game. Like yes, funny haha, block game pickaxe. But Minecraft is a survival sandbox with 2 optional bosses, and functionally infinite world size. Terraria is also a survival sandbox, but WAY more focused on material progression and fighting up the boss ladder, with a relatively small world size. I feel like with Minecraft's rather short vertical progression it makes losing items on death MUCH less punishing than doing the same in Terraria. I just don't think they're as comparable as most people think.

@@lotsofducks3236 Okay but if it *is* less punishing, doesn't that mean that it's *not* as much of a problem to consider KeepInventory not a cheat? Also I agree that they're not enough of the same, but I feel the same way about other games in regards to how they treat inventory as part of the difficulty. I find games that make it needlessly hard to keep what you worked for, whether bc you lose them on death or bc durability breaks your stuff, to be a lot more tedious and less fun. I could compare Horizon: Zero Dawn and Degrees of Lewdity and make the same point, honestly - except depending on what you want in DoL, losing your clothes all the time does lend to the narrative might not inherently be a bad thing. I proposed that on a PVP factions server once. Instead of losing everything, when you died it would drop 3-5 random things from your inventory (usually diamonds, blocks, or rarer resources like potion mats.) I think it'd be great to have keepinventory as a choice between keeping it fully, partially or not at all. The new default for the easier modes could then be to keep some of it to maintain some level of punishment. The mid tier option could also keep more exp, perhaps remove the 7 level cap and just keep a percentage of all exp.

Why are people on easy mode complaining about Mojang making it easier?

*Simple Solution:* Don't make keep-inventory a cheat, and have it right under the difficulty menu so that people can observe it change as they change difficulties and turn it off if they don't like it.

People arguing against this need to be cautious about two things when forming arguments: 1)this is first and fore-mostly a SANDBOX game and 2) this change was most likely intended for a younger, arguably less capable, and perhaps less experienced audience. So, if easy mode - a game mode that a seeming majority of the players doesn’t interact with, young and old included - undergoes a change that makes the game EASIER for new people, why be upset?Granted, I do believe that keep inventory should be an option in ALL difficulties. Having the rulesets be readily available to the player encourages fine tuning of the experience, which is good for player count. The point is, do NOT tack on YOUR perception of what is acceptable for each gamemode in a SANDBOX setting. Other people have no obligation to adhere to abitrary standards set by YOU if they are playing in a single player world.

I think the best way to do this is to have a "custom" difficulty with a submenu listing all features and how they're altered, and when you make a new world, you're presented with a screen showing each 'preset' difficulty and its mechanics, like in BG3. This is a good change for the casual player or you know, CHILDREN who play this game. We really shouldn't be making a game too hard for the kids. Let them run wild and die. Trust me, the frustration of running back to where you died is more than enough punishment. If you have kids lose their super enchanted diamond armor or even netherite armor, that alone might make them quit the game. I've had adult friends quit modded minecraft games over enchanted equipment vanish due to it vanishing. The hours and effort they spent on it was not worth the 5mins it takes to disappear.

The people who hate the idea of keep inventory on peaceful and easier difficulties are not people who use those difficulties... Mr. Hardcore man isnt going to be using fucking peaceful or easy mode, so it doesnt involve them. Neither does normal or just hard difficulty players. If they put Keep Inventory in the General tab for Bedrock Edition and in the Game tab for Java Edition, it would make it more visible. I believe that if this feature is to be implemented, whether or not advancements are made accessible with keepinventory, I say that if you have peaceful or easy mode selected, an additional simple popup appears to toggle keepinventory right there by the difficulty, along with a brief description of what it does. No complicated (for new players) menu navigation, and for more experienced players that may make new worlds often, no mild/annoying chore of going out of their way to hit a single button to toggle an option. While yes, more experienced players may not play easy difficulties as often, would it not make sense to still at least make it an easy toggle for everyone?
