The Lost Boy it wouldn’t work as a general knife but I think would be fine as a serrated bread knife. Either way, LPL was talking about it as a handle, not a blade. I’d worry about the copper greening with skin contact.

Looks very pretty, although the asymmetry of the triangle bothers me a bit. 2 things I realized during my own experiments making jewellery: - Nickel causes allergies, so I recommend covering any nickel part that might touch the skin with a clear resin. - For pendants I recommend having triangles point down and not up, at least if it's intended for women. That way the shape lines up beautifully with the collarbones and the breasts. Also, that way there are no pointy bits poking into sensitive places, which especially women with larger breast sizes will appreciate!
@Taunus-Tim
@Taunus-Tim 5 лет назад
nickel doesn't cause allergies! But IF you already are allergic to nickel, then it causes allergic reactions. the majority of people isn't allergic to nickel, but a fair amount are. So yeah, a coating might be a good idea anyway.
@Nemozoli
@Nemozoli 5 лет назад
@@Taunus-Tim Also, copper tends to become green/stain the skin green with prolonged skin exposure, so coating this pendant is a must!
@ragnkja

@@Taunus-Tim Nickel allergies are pretty common, although a pendant isn’t necessarily a problem for everyone who is allergic, unlike earrings where nickel causes inflammation for basically everyone who is allergic to it.

Use the green wax you've been using for molds - melt a chunk onto the metal to grind and stick a wooden dowel into the wax. Then you can hold the piece to grind and polish. Jewelers do this for lots of things. Adding a very very light coat of something like canola oil on the silicone as a release agent might allow the wax to flow smoothly...

I think what I like about Alec Steele's videos is that he takes every project as a learning opportunity. He seems to be a very humble man that is focused on perfecting his craft. The amount he has grown over the years as a blacksmith and designer is phenomenal. It's nice to see a young man with a hunger for learning and a strong work ethic instead of the normal man child RU-vidrs. I'm also glad that he found a colleague who is equally adept at his craft so they can push each other to greater heights. I don't know if he will see this, but keep at it Allec Steele, you are an inspiration to to a lot of young men.

Alec get a sheet of thin finished plywood. When needing to cut something small on a bandsaw glue what you need to cut onto a piece of the plywood. You can then hold it with your hands for control without getting close to the blade. Finished plywood is perfect for that because it's flat enough and smooth enough.

Leeroy that is true, and that’s why I want him to stay on them longer. If he can’t even show us a real shot of his work than he’s not holding himself to a high enough standard. This is especially true for someone like him who constantly preaches about how much ‘elbow grease’ he puts into projects, and how he wants them to be absolutely perfect. If he shows the imperfections then he will get criticism and will have to improve. He is extremely talented and a gifted artist, but he still has an immense amount to learn (like he says in his videos all the time).

1.99 is actually exactly 2 mm if you take the tolerance of the calipers into account. the failure lies in the thousands of a millimeter... saying this, there is no thing on earth, that is "exactly" any size. it's just a matter of how precise your measuring method is. even a drill bit, that measures 2.00000 millimeters would really be something like this size: 2.000035892. but there is a limit how exact you want to measure it.

For the hanging hole, instead of going front to back which requires a link to put it on a chain, I would have drilled holes in the sides that meet in the middle so that you can put a chain right through it. That way and the front face of the triangle remains unmarked. I think it would have had a cleaner look overall that way, but that's just my personal opinion. I suppose if it was really thin this might not have been possible though.

Stone marking tip my stepmother (certified gemologist) used occasionally for mass pave or invisible settings' layouts: Put a bit of non-damaging ink or paint on stone's face & stamp that to metal for exact dimensions of stone face no matter stone's shape. Just look up what the stone you're using has issues with as far as potentially staining or scuffing the surface. When done, just drop stones in their appropriate cleaning solution bath to remove the ink or paint. (If I remember from 20 years ago correctly, white acrylic paint or talcum powder paste were used mostly for darker metals & black alcohol ink marker was used on certain stones for lighter metals. There were other black "inks or paints" but I don't recall what they all were. NEVR use graphite due to its abrasive properties & can it get into cracks, scratches, and/or chips you didn't want highlighted or didn't notice at purchase.)

Just a quick tip regarding soldering the jumpring.. try heating the ring evenly instead of the solder itself. Also know that the solder will run toward the hotter parts of the ring, so if you put the solder on the opposite side to where your torch is, it should run into the gap nicely. otherwise, keep practicing and you'll get better and better :)

An idea for a mokume gane project: a super luxurious poker chip set, with perhaps a precious metal disk inlay and stone setting. If you can make it a large enough set, I am sure you will find a happy customer for it too... (speaking of disk setting: I'd love to see you try some of that: setting small plates or disks of metal into other metal or into wood. It seems like a silly glue job on first thought, but know that true craftsmen used to be able to do this without a single drop of glue... (and glueing doesn't give such a swell result anyway) Another path to explore and push your boundaries)

Great billet of mokume gane and pendant Alec! Your power tools are making me drool. You seem to have studied non-ferrous metals and stone setting, but you haven't followed some processes I learned and I would love to know why. MAKING the mokume gane: I learned to fuse the billet in one heating and to apply pressure while doing so. You can see the fuse point and remove the heat right away. HOT forging: I have never seen hot forging for non-ferrous metals. These are softer when quenched as soon as the red dulls. The molecules stay misaligned for a longer period of time. Don't know if the electric forging machine would make the metal too hard right away. I would usually make a billet and after quenching, forge till 1/3 to 1/2 the thickness annealing along the way, then run the billet thru a rolling mill to reduce the thickness annealing when the metal gets too hard. So have you tried doing the process the goldsmith way of doing things and chosen to switch to the steel way deliberately? I could have done better writing this but it is late. Jo in Philadelphia PA

To all the “fans” that are out here giving Alec crap for doing these more diverse projects. Keep in mind he is only 20 so being easily pulled in any which direction that interests him and is a luxury he can afford with his current life status. Every project he does isn’t just for us the fans but also for himself and for personal growth. Each new skill he acquires hones his entire skill set and makes him overall a better and more through craftsman. He is doing this for a living and the decision to follow what interests him is what got him started in this whole process to begin with so let’s all give him some slack for not whacking stuff every video.

Hey Alec I know you care about safety, so I have a chemical safety tip for you: keep a very clear distinction between the coffee mugs you use for etching and the mugs you use for drinking, so no one ever drinks from the etching mugs. It's like we (I'm a scientist) do in the lab: no food ever goes in the chemicals fridge.

New series name.. "How Alec became a jeweler" Also great work on the settings and pendant. When I make my designs I try to plan the way I attach the chain so it works into the piece design. Like that one I would drill the hole through the side rather then the front so I wouldn't need a jump ring to attach a chain to and disrupt the look of the piece.
