The statue has returned 😬
Howzit kākou. This week we’ll be discussing how images such as the statue at Papio Park contribute to the erasure of kuanaʻike Hawaiʻi here in Puna. The majority of residents here in Waiakahiʻula still refer to this ʻāina as Hawaiian Beaches and with non-Hawaiʻi images such as this out on display, any Hawaiian knowledge of this area is basically pushed out of existence.
My solution to this issue would be that the Hawaiian Shores Community Association Board, find an ʻŌiwi artist out there (there are many, but one from Puna would be great) to craft an image that properly represents this area (from a Hawaiian perspective) and that creation would later be placed in the Papio Park.
As for the “Moonwalker”, perhaps it can be placed elsewhere, where it is not featured in the forefront on Hawaiian lands. Unless one wants to contribute to the erasure of Hawaiian history and culture, Hawaiian imagery in Hawaiʻi must always come first. ☝🏽
