This special edition of the MOLAA Zoom Project series focuses on the PST Art and Science Exhibition: Arteônica* Art, Science, and Technology in Latin America today. In each chapter, in a conversation between the most remarkable artists from Latin America and Latinxs in the US, and our MOLAA Chief Curator Gabriela Urtiaga, we place the focus on a series or specific artwork that requires a close inspection and deliberate process of contemplation, and exploration; delving into the ideas surrounding the creation of the works, their sources of research and inspiration, to immerse ourselves in the world of the artists. This special edition of the MOLAA Zoom Project series focuses on the PST Art and Science Exhibition: Arteônica* Art, Science, and Technology in Latin America today.
About the artist:
Leo Nuñez is an Argentine artist born in Buenos Aires in 1975. He holds a Master's degree in Technology and Aesthetics of Technological Art from UNTREF (Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero). His previous academic training includes studies at various universities, technical courses such as "Systems Engineering" at UTN (Universidad Tecnológica Nacional), and artistic degrees like "Image and Sound Design" at UBA (Universidad de Buenos Aires), and a Bachelor's degree in Electronic Arts at UNTREF.
He was recently appointed Director of the Master's program in Technologies and Aesthetics of Electronic Arts at UNTREF, where he has been working for several years as a postgraduate lecturer and technical manager in the technological art production workshop. He is a tenured professor at UNA (Universidad Nacional del Arte). Leo is also the co-founder of Espacio Nixso, a space dedicated to the dissemination of technological knowledge for artists, schools, teachers, and children. Additionally, he served as the technical coordinator of the Bienal Sur.
His artistic career includes international accolades such as the VIDA 10.0 award for completed work and the VIDA 12.0 award for production incentive. Locally, he has received two Mamba/Fundación Telefónica awards, a first prize at the National Salon, and a second prize in the UNTREF Electronic Arts awards. Leo has been selected for the Japan Media Arts Festival and the New Media Festival in Miami. He has also received a study grant from CCEBA (Centro Cultural de España en Buenos Aires) and a residency at DXArts, Center for Digital Arts and Experimental Media at the University of Washington.
Leo has exhibited extensively, both in solo and group shows. His exhibitions have taken place not only in Argentina but also across Latin America, Europe, and the United States. Notable participations include Arco (Spain), Cyberfest at The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, "What’s on Your Mind?" at the World Bank, Washington D.C., SIGGRAPH 2017 in California, four participations in the File Festival (Brazil), Beall Center at UCLA, California, two exhibitions at DXArts at UW, Washington, Fundación Telefónica in Argentina and Peru, Arte BA, CCK, Usina del Arte, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes Neuquén, Festival Voltaje, and Festival Propaganda in Colombia, Maker Space in Chile, among others. He has also held solo and group exhibitions in galleries such as Galería Pasaje 17 and RoArts in Argentina and participated in Dacil Art.
