Forming an A16 size crucible from clay and grog mix by hand.......I've used a vibration/ compaction tool that I've fashioned from a bit of old scrap metal attached to a compressed air hammer.
The recipe is in this video. • Making clay and grog c... I hope that helps.
This is the first time I have made a crucible this size and it is a bit of an experiment. ...Only watch if you like watching paint dry!

Hey Jimmy, you mention glazing it.If you use a flux for melting the copper or bronze, the flux will also affect the glaze. Especially if you use borax, it will significantly lower the melting point of the glaze and cause it to run down the sides of the crucible. Hope this helps! Great job with the molds and using an air hammer to pack the clay!

@JimmyCogg
@JimmyCogg 3 года назад
Grog - Crushed unglazed pottery or brick used as an additive in plaster or clay. It is clay that has already been fired and then crushed up. Being fired it is a refractory material, relatively stable under high temperatures. I hope that helps.

Hi Mike, I've not used this 3 litre one yet. It has dried out well, no obvious defects. It's winter here in the UK. When the weather gets better I will fire it, glaze it and then, if free of major defect, use it. My smaller one litre crucibles, made with the same process, are great and work very well. Cheers.

Hi Jimmy Cogg. Can you tell me how to get the Graphite and what clay might you use to make a Graphite cruicible. Seems info on the net is hard to come buy. And what would the curing time be before you can use it?. Thanx Tom Copland Ayr.
@JimmyCogg
@JimmyCogg 4 года назад
Hi Thomas, I've not made a clay graphite crucible. I've purchased some powdered graphite to use as an additive and mold release agent from ebay. I use standard fireclay for mine which are a mainly a mixture of fireclay and grog (crushed firebrick) I understand tha clay graphite crucibles seem to require a more industrial process, plenty of pressure. Cheers. Regards, Jim

What does anyone think about inserting a metal container into the center of the crucible? Such as graphite molded to the inside size of heavy can, then molding another crucible on outside? Would that last longer?
@JackTheAwesomeKnot

can i use castable refracory for fire clay? Thanx for ur attention
@JimmyCogg
@JimmyCogg 4 года назад
Hi, I don't know about that. That would be a worthwhile experiment. The clay acts as a binder and has moisture in it to help it bind and that must be dried out sufficiently before firing so that the final pot has strength and integrity at the high temperatures that it will be taken. The castable refractory would have to do the same thing to be any good. I would try it, dry it and fire it and look at the properties of the fired piece. If it has sufficient strength when fired, and stands up to the temperature of the metal being melted, why not give it a go. I would be interested to see the results of that.

It is a concrete mould. I put the mix in the other video in the sequence. Basically fire clay and grog with a small amount of water to moisten it.

@mhdyusuff5118
@mhdyusuff5118 5 лет назад
Sir.. it's working for iron melting?
@JimmyCogg
@JimmyCogg 5 лет назад
Hi, I've not used them for iron, only for Brass/copper. Iron is a much higher melting point. I don't see why they can't be used for iron. The clay used however must be a high temperature firing clay otherwise it will break down under the high temperature.

I was looking for videos on making crucibles to cast aluminium. Thanks. What’s the material? Sand? What’s the binder?
@JimmyCogg

The material is "grog" which is already fired ceramic material crushed into powder for example crushed fire brick. The binder is fire clay moistened with a very little water.

Green sand is a mixture of powdered cat litter (plain) and finely sifted sand, lightly dampened. Not sure of ratio but I think it's 2 parts sand to 1 part clay. Again, have not made any yet.
