Thank you so much for the video. The use of legos for molding never came to my mind. That's a very smart strategy!

Thanks! It helped me a lot on the pigment section. I currently use a white smooth on resin and thinking of pigmenting it with black.

That is really cool! I just made my first Oomoo mold this weekend. I haven't yet tried any of their resins yet though. I did look at them on the website though. I definitely prefer clear resin so likely will try one of those. I used the Lego box idea for my mold as well. It was fun. Thankfully my son let me borrow some of his Lego pieces. :) The vent idea is cool. I may have to try that sometimes. So far I am molding spheres so not sure how I could get a vent to work in that. It isn't a two part mold either. I would be afraid of ruining the sphere shape. - Heidi

Thank you for this tutorial. I had some questions 1. Have you used Legos for bigger molds? 2. Is the mold sealer the best way to stop the silicone from coming out of the Legos or is there a better way? 3. Have you used a pressure pot to get bubbles out or would you recommend a vacuum chamber? And lastly have you tried the petroleum jelly as a way to seal the Legos cause I am not sure if I want to try it for a bigger molds. Thank you

1. How do i get rid of bubbles without buying vacuum stuff? for silicone mold mix and resin mix? 2. Once i have the mold made and im about to pour resin in, is it a good idea to spray mold release spray on the inside of the mold? 3. If i had other pigment powder for other things, or stuff like acrylic paint, would those work to add color to the resin? 4. wat would happen if when you were pouring silicone mold straight onto piece u were tryin to mold? 5. is it a bad idea to use other products resin with this brand silicone mold and vice versa?

I'm confused. I have Alumilite Amazing Rubber to make the molds. I bought Smooth-on Smooth-Cast 325 to make the casts. Why are you using a color-able resin to make your molds? The resin is supposed to be hard so you can make figure parts with it, while the mold is made from rubber so its flexible Edit: I see what happened. Had to go back. That was OOMOO that you used first

GREAT VIDEO! but i have a question! is the pigment starter kit you have in the descriptions one the correct one for the liquid plastic? i only ask because in the link it says its pigment for silicone (which i thought is used to make the mold)... unless they are basically the same substance (except one is more rubbery) if you can clear this up i appreciate it. i bought the starter kit and want to get into it! thanks!
@GregSarabiaArt
@GregSarabiaArt 10 лет назад
You're right, I've updated the link with the correct version. I bought mine on ebay and it was unlabeled. If you go to Smooth-on's website and look under pigments you'll see the correct ones that work for liquid plastic and then if you want to shop around, you have the correct info. Hope that helps and good luck.

Great tutorial I have a question on casting say if I want to cast a 1/6 (12 inch) head sculpt but I want it shrink that head sculpt to 1/12 scale (6 inches) what materials would I need to do that? Will it be the same method as seen in your video or will it be different? I ask since haven't seen anyone make a proper video tutorial on shrinking a 1/6 head and making it to a 6 inch head sculpt since I would like to learn how to do that for figures

hello, very nice video, im actually having some problems with bubbles on that resin, my question is if when you cast it you have a lot of microbubbles in the piece, or if you don´t and what do you recommend me, to avoid all the microbubbles or almost all of them, another thing that i wanna ask you is: Do you shake parts a and b just before using it? is it really necesary? thank´s for the video,excellent job

I hope someone gets to read this before this comment get removed. Do not use Smooth-On silicone rubber if unless you are willing to accept that it will shrink and change its shape in a few months and it will continue to shrink substantially over the course of a few years. I have made many molds with both of their silicones. The chart Smooth-On gives you for how much it will shrink is false. It shinks about 1/4" per every 24". I had to constantly cut the mother mold down to adjust for this continuous shrinkage. I have to throw the mold out this morning as it is now too deformed to be able to use. This rubber also tears quite easily and it will rip after a short while of demolding.

Shore Hardness is an important factor when considering which mold rubber you should choose for your mold. It's not necessarily the Smooth ON brand that you're having trouble with, it's that you don;'t seem to know what shore hardness is right for your work. Smooth On makes a TON of great products and it would probably help if you explored all of their shore hardnesses before you tell someone not to use their products.

How do u get the molds perfectly clear I did mine and I either got them with bubbles in them or they came out too soft. What do you suggest?
@GregSarabiaArt
@GregSarabiaArt 8 лет назад
baby powder helps the resin adhere to the mold if the mold itself has no bubbles in it. but, it can take a few casts to get the kinks out

Anyone know how good the quality of this plastic is?
@truwe316
@truwe316 9 лет назад
Zach DeWitt nothing that is shown in this video is plastic. If you are referring to the final product, then you mean resin, and it is quite hard (harder than a normal factory made action figure head would be)once it is properly allowed to dry. If you want to make it more durable then you should be using a casting pot to get all the air bubbles out and make the resin more durable and compact.
