Moldovan: The Language That Doesn't Exist Anymore!

Moldvan was a language that doesn't exist anymore, and in fact, never really existed.
In 2023, something very peculiar happened. A language, Moldovan, stopped existing, even though there were still 2.5 million people who were speaking it. How did this happen?
Some would say Romanian was the reason. Moldovan's turbulent history in the Roman Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and the Soviet Union led it down a pretty rocky road, but its mutual intelligibility with Romanian would ultimately be its demise. Check out the story of this fascinating case of linguistics as we bid Moldovan goodbye.

**READ BEFORE YOU COMMENT:** Yes, I know that Moldovan never truly existed as a language. If you watch past the first minute of the video, you'll discover that the video dissects *why* Moldovan was ever classified as its own language in the first place. Have a great day! 🙃

I'm from Brazil, I have a profound curiosity about Romania, probably because it's the only country in Eastern Europe with a romance language, it's exotic and beautiful to my ears. During 20 years, I was an avid fan of many romanian singers, especially regarding the rap scene. Unfortunately, the language is quite distinctive from other romance languages such as portuguese, spanish and italian. But I can notice many words that are similar or even identical to many words we have in Portuguese.
@PaddingtonBear4
@PaddingtonBear4 3 месяца назад
In practice it is much easier for a speaker of Romanian to learn French, Spanish, or Portuguese (and especially easy to learn Italian) than for a speaker of these languages to learn Romanian. This has an objective explanation. Romanian contains elements that don't exist in other Latin languages, such as Slavic loanwords, and pronunciation and constructs that identify it as part of the so-called Balkan sprachbund. For example a speaker of Greek or Albania or Bulgarian, if he or she would learn Romanian, would be able to pronounce the words exactly as Romanians do, while a native Italian for example would forever retain an "Italian accent".
@valevisa8429
@valevisa8429 3 месяца назад
It's distinctive because we have a vast Slavic vocabulary mixed with Latin.

avînd existed in Romania too until, in early nineties, it was decided that î should be replaced with â inside the word and keep î as it is in the beginning and end of the word. This is because all words were using î excepting român and its derivates, so they generalized to make sure that â becomes a common used letter.

Moldovan here. This youtuber is only repeating the Moscow's imperialist propaganda. There is no such language "Moldovan" as distinct from "Romanian". Our ancestors named our language both Romanian and Moldovan, but mainly "Romanian". Moldova itself was established by Romanians, which continued to name themselves "Romanians" (or Wallachians, in other languages), while also using the name "Moldovans" when aiming to differentiate from Romanians from other Romanian regions. Even if other Romanian regions would not exist ... we would still name ourselves "Romanians" and our language also "Romanian". Moldova created the modern state of Romania, after freely uniting with Wallachia in 1859. The present day "Republic of Moldova" is not Moldova. Moldova is in Romania. The "Republic" is only a former part of Moldova which was occupied by the Russians 1812-1917 and by Soviets 1944-1991.

There are bigger difference between Mexican Spanish and Spanish spoken in Spain than there seems to be between Romanian and Moldovan yet both varieties are known simply as Spanish. I like how you mentioned Afrikaans and Dutch as well as three of the Scandinavian languages which are almost the same. There may be a high lexical similarity when regarding the two, but they have a very different grammar. The demise of the "moldovan" language was due to the disappearance of the cause of its creation: politically created artificial division between the Moldovan people and the Romanians. Even during the medieval Moldova Principality, the language was called Romanian. It is the same to German, spoken in many different small states. So Moldovan language never existed. As to Transnistria, they speak Russian officially there, so their comments on others' language is also politic.

In the historic documents prior to 20th century, whenever the phrase "Moldovan language" is used, if one actually understands the language and the text, one immediately knows that what is meant is "the language of Moldovans", not a linguistic claim that the language was somehow different from Romanian. Moldovans were, of course, the people from (the subjects of) the Principality of Moldova (Moldavia in Medieval Latin).

@@Vlad-yi6oo Actually, we don't use different terms. We use the term "Romanian language" to denote the language, in all spheres, ethnic and geopolitical included. The usage of the term "Moldovan language" was imposed by Soviet propaganda before 1989, which called "Romania" a "fascist entity", so everything related to Romania, including the language had to be fascist. This term was taken over after the dissolution of the USSR by Russian Putinist propaganda, which was so pervasive in some countries in the west (for example, Germany) that some politicians took it for representing the truth, without bothering to check the reality on the ground. In Moldova, the language is called Romanian, in school and everywhere. The only ones who use the term "Moldovan language" are the pro-putinists, which is a small politically extremist minority.

My Friend, only the Soviet imperialism supported this idea, of a "so-called" Moldavian language. At the same time, their Serbian friends, also support the idea of a Vlahian/Valahian language as a distinct and not Romanian language, for the Romanians living south Danube, in Serbia. So, the Russians and their Serbian friends say that Valahian and Moldavian languages and peoples are something else than the Romanian language and peoples, but what a SURPRISE!!, Romania itself was created by the unification of Valahia (Wallachia) and Moldavia (half of it in Romania, the other almost half as Republic of Moldavia, plus parts in Ukraine)!!! Very profound and logic, this Ruso-Serbian approach! It's like saying that Moravians and Bohemians are not Czechs and they speak Moravian and Bohemian languages! For instance, the Bavarians and Franconians speak pretty different dialects, but nobody says that they are not Germans! Instead, we all speak the same Romanian language WITH NO DIALECTS! and others come to teach us that these are different languages! Yeah, that is the measure of how stupid it is this discussion!

This video is cleary made for triggering people. Historical fact - the "moldovan language" was a historical name of what we call today the "romanian language." It's name came from the former principality of Moldova, that existed untill 1859. At that time, Wallachia and Moldova united and formed a new country, Romania. 2. Could it be that two actual languages with 100% intelligibility are actually the same language but named differently? It sure the vast majority of all the writers, savants, and linguists from Moldova and Romania consider this. 3. Moldovan language believers are basically the antivaxxers of the linguistic community.

Current Republic of Moldova lies partially on Eastern territories of Principality of Moldova occupied by the Russian Empire in 1812. The Principality of Moldova continued to exist in the Western part, where the river Moldova is and all the old capitals of the Principality are, and where the majority of Moldovans lived. In 1859, Moldovan and Wallachian Principalities united by electing the same man as Prince, a Moldovan called Alexandru Ioan Cuza, founding the Romanian nation state. Romanian language doesn't have dialects, but regional variations distinguished by accent and few regionalisms. This may seem weird, but there's a simple explanation how this happened: for the vast majority of their history, up until the modern era, a very large number of Romanian people were transhumance pastoralists. Year, after year, Romanians from Transylvania, Moldova and Wallachia were mingling in the warmer months on the alpine pastures of the Carpathians. It's also why there's a confusion between Moldovan and Romanian in polls since for less educated people it looks as if they're asked if they speak with Romanian "standard" accent or Moldovan one. Moldovan nation and language were created to justify the invasion and occupation of Eastern Moldova... sorry the liberation of Moldova and the oppressed Moldovan people from the clutches of Romanian imperialism. By a miracle of Russian science the Moldovan people lived only in some (not all) territories of Eastern Moldova and the vast majority of Moldovans were declared not real Moldovans but just Romanians, including those living in a new batch of Moldovan territories extracted as payment from Romania for the suffering inflicted on the noble and freedom loving Moldovan people that were totally not Romanians. While the "Moldovan" and Romanian languages are identical, the initial version of "Moldovan" invented in 1920s in the New and Improved Russian Empire aka the Soviet Union was quite different: it was based on a Romanian-Russian pidgin spoken by minority Romanian communities in Transnistria, outside of Moldova proper, using a brand new alphabet based on Russian and stuffed to the brim with meaningless Russian neologisms. It was completely unintelligible for everyone, especially for those supposed to be Moldovan nationals, so then the Moldovan language became Romanian language with Russian alphabet and neologisms, but even that didn't stick. Finally, around the 70s, Russians had to content themselves with a "Moldovan" language that was just Romanian written with Russian alphabet and that too died as soon as Soviet Republic of Moldova became independent. Now the Russians are fighting and losing the battle to just force that Romanian language be called Moldovan in random region they decided it's the actual and real Moldova.

@@ThePolyglotFiles It is, and it's also one of the main reasons Romanians have been on the Anti-Russian train for the last two centuries. Even the one difference between the "Moldovan" and Romanian text you noticed is there simply because when Soviet Republic of Moldova gained independence at the begging of the 90s, it adopted Romanian alphabet and orthography (together with the red-yellow-blue flag that is a Romanian nationalist symbol since 18th century). In the meantime, Romanian Academy decided go back to the more "aesthetically pleasing" pre WWII orthography, but the real reason was trying to completely wipe out everything connected with the Communist regime that was imposed by Russian tanks, including its own post-WWII orthographic reform.

Very nice video. Your positive attitude is very pleasant to the viewers, too. :) Unfortunately, the history of "Moldovan language" wasn't at all rosy and light. In 1940s people were murdered for opposing Soviet occupation; one of the key tools of occupation was renaming the language from Romanian to "Moldovan", and trying to forcibly modify it. It was a brain child of Stalin's nationalities policy. From 1924 to 1940 a groups of 19 or 20 Soviet linguists was given the task of creating the new "Moldovan language", as "a language of the proletariat" as opposed to literary Romanian, which the Soviets deemed "a bourjois language". Yes, Soviet leaders, who did not speak a word in the language, took upon themselves to modify the language of another people. (Probably should ring a similarity bell with Putin's motivation for invading Ukraine in 2022.) To this end, 19th century Romanian loanwords from French, Italian, and other languages, describing concepts or objects that did not exist prior to 1800s, were deemed "bourjois", and had to be replaced with ... Russian loanwords. Moreover, the native words were to be pronounced and written in the most pidgin and uneducated way possible. This was a time, when Soviet ideology encouraged being illiterate or having little education as something to be proud of, as showing one's "healthy social, working class heritage". Educated people were deemed a social enemy class, and were expected to be eradicated via deportations and Gulag to make way for a new Soviet man that would be created. The new Russified pidgin was imposed as the "Moldovan language" on people overnight, in 1940. There was one problem, though. The population could hardly understand the new pidgin. Nonetheless, is was carried on in documents and official texts till Stalin's death in 1953, when the Soviet authorities, again overnight, re-introduced literary Romanian, albeit written with the Russian script till 1989. Here is an example of the pidgin that Soviets used in documents in 1940-1953. Ministry of Internal Affairs (Ministerul Afacerilor Interne) became Министерюл Трегилор дин Нэунтру, which in English would be ”Ministry of Stuff from Inside”. The language had to be simple, "working class", without "bourjois" words such as "affair" or "interior". The worst part was not that the language was mutilated, but the fact that many people were killed by the Soviets for not conforming themselves to their demands. As an ironic twist of fate, from 1932 to 1938 Soviet Union saw an opportunity to promote its ideology by temporarily improving relationships with Romania. Thus, in 1932, the linguistic work on creating the "Moldovan language" (in what is today the Transnistrian region of Moldova) was ceased, and Romanian language was used instead. When this policy was reversed in 1938, scapegoats had to be identified. Thus the linguists that created "Moldovan" were purged for acquiescing in 1932 to switch to Romanian, and most of them were executed.
