Mollenhauer's Dream Flute Soprano Recorder VS the half priced Student Recorder: Can be compared?

Andri's Dream 4119 Soprano and Student 1042 Soprano recorders, both in pearwood, by Mollenhauer
I'm making this video just because these are the only wooden soprano instruments I own.
To be honest, the student model I don't use it anymore . I had been using it for about six months and then I turned to a plastic Yamaha. The Andri's Dream Flute came later in my collection and it's one of my favorite instruments. I love playing medieval, renaissance, early baroque and folk music.
If I have to say one drawback about the Dream Flute this will be fingering of the b flat. On the Dream Flute is 013467 instead of 0134 the Student and my plastic recorders as well use.
The Student model was very helpful for me to practice on how to clean and oil a wooden recorder without worrying that I may harm an expensive instrument.

thanks for the nice comparison! The recorder is actually not an easy instrument. My new Eagle model is maybe 5 times more difficult to master than a baroque recorder or a dream flute... :-) It's a totally new dimension and it's very satisfying to master something difficult, whatever level you play , whether it is a dream flute, a plastic Yamaha or an Eagle recorder.

Really helpful. I had decided on the Dream but the guy in the music shop tried to dissuade me and suggested I go for a Mollenhauer Denner as he said the sound was more refined. I play mainly folk and your video convinced me that the Dream is right for me. A video with you playing Greek folk music on the recorder would be really good sometime 🙂

I think the dream flute is great at folk music, although I’m not into this genre that much, but I’d like to explore it

Sounds like the Dream in plum wood would have been the perfect instrument for you. It is so much better than the pear wood version. I also mainly play folk and jazz.

I would love to hear that and in the meantime does anybody have some other recommendations for great greek folk with recorders or flutes to try?

The dreamflute essentially is derived form a renaissance recorder, and not a baroque recorder. It is indened to be an affordable modern recorder, that you use in combination with modern instruments. baroque recorders ar available in may different qualities, the cheaper ones of pear wood are OK for beginners, but if you are more advanced, get something better. Both types have their specific use, it is not orne or the other, but as a recorder player you like to have several different recorders.

Just got the Dream model after seeing this. It really does sound as good as this video demonstrates. and compared to a plastic one, well wow, it is far better, giving a wonderful mellow tone. So thank you for this. My only question is, did you oil the recorder immediately after you bought it or is that not necessary?

Wow that really was a night and day difference. I hope I can get a hold of one of those dream recorders sometime but maybe either of these might be better than my Yamaha plastic one. I can't wait for my aulos basic tenor to come in. I have never played a larger recorder before so not sure what to expect?

I liked the sound of the “student” better, especially at the top. The sound at the top is cleaner, there are no hissing overtones and, it seemed to me, better controlled.Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what I heard.

The hole for the right hand's pinky finger is further away on the dream recorder which I find is bit of a problem for me. I can't move as fast as I'm used to.

So far I have the Adri's Dream Recorder in plastic and I can notice that the sound is big and very good for vocal music :) I played a Debussy Romance on it :D if that's how good the plastic model is... I can't imagine a wooden version.

Surprisingly the pear wood is not a huge step up from the plastic Dream, but that is partly true because the plastic Dreams are superb. BUT for a huge improvement try the plum wood Dream. It is absolutely gorgeous and such a delight to play.

Look for the Mollenhauer Waldorf edition, it has exactly the same shape (bore, windway, labium, fingerholes) as the dream flute, sounds equal, is quite cheaper than the dream flute, but looks somehow like a kind of sextoy...

@nickperpirakis2211 3 года назад
I want an alto of this model too😁
@ninjaaron
@ninjaaron 3 года назад
I've got them both and I honestly like the soprano much more. The soprano is easier to play in tune on tricky notes like F# (B on Alto), and the alto sounds a bit wimpy on the low notes, and they are really easy to split, but I guess this is quite normal on alto recorders. The upper register on the alto is beautiful, however, and it's not as picky about your half-hole technique on the highest notes as the soprano. In general, the dream flutes sound beautiful, but they are more challenging in terms of intonation and ease of play than a good baroque recorder (like a Denner---not this student model). There are definitely pros and cons to this design.

@@ninjaaron couple of months ago I got a moeck Rottenburgh soprano, and I want to make a video playing them side-by-side in various pieces of the repertory. I think the dream flutes are a very good introduction to the Renaissance recorders (using the baroque fingerings 🤷🏼‍♂️)

@@nickperpirakis2211 yes, thanks, It's true, it is similar to F. I have a question, I didn't buy the Dream recorder yet, and I'm still hesitating, would not be better to pay a little bit more and buy a baroque model, In Canada, the adris dream model is about 198,00 $ and the Moeck Rottenberg Soprano Recorder (was about 275 $) and I just looked and It is in sold at 235,00$ What would be your suggestion? @@eleonorer.6861 I have a Rottenburgh sopyas well, but they are different instruments. For example if you want to play late baroque sonatas who require a lot of high notes you shoo for the Rottenburgh. The andis dream is perfect for Earl Baroque and folk etc.
