Wait a minute... The Oscars had this performance in their hands... and dumped it on a Pre-Show instead of the awards themselves?!? What idiots... this was stunning... I can't believe I missed this until today. Also can't believe this song lost...
If you compare the two recordings her voice is is a lot smoother and less raw then in the version from the movie. This makes me think that in the film they mixed Rachel McAdams' voice with hers to create an ABBA-like hybrid sound that is a little rougher around the edges. Molly and Rachel actually have similar voices so this would be possible to do. That also explains why Molly is credited under her "My Marianne" middle name in the film rather than under her first and last name. I would love to hear more about where Rachel's voice was used and where Molly's voice was.
Also Ironically Iceland probably would have actually won Eurovision for real if it had happened!! Dadi Freyr giving in to peer pressure and doing a version of ja ja ding dong was one of my fav things last year.
this end credits thing has become an epidemic. Same thing with the bias against comedies. Years ago, I thought That Thing You Do, another song that was integral to the actual movie, should’ve won. This performance was an all-timer.
@Soyman the Sorceror If "woke culture" is damaging then how come a certain dark comedy with a bumbling imaginary Hitler recently won an Oscar and became an instant audience favorite?
Not only is she an extraordinary vocalist - the way the children spontaneously smile at her when she glances back at them and smiles encouragingly. Big heart!!!!
The song is solid, the performance was flawless by Molly and the children’s choir, and the visuals overall were stunning. I think the only reason this was snubbed at the Oscars is because the song is from a Netflix movie and the film industry is terrified of being snuffed out by streaming service based entertainment.
It’s actually a really good movie, while the scores on average were decent for the kind of film it is, it’s really better than the critic scores. It’s done with a lot of heart and sincerity and the music is of course phenomenal. It’s definitely Will Ferrel’s best movie in quite a while, and you can tell how much respect he has for Eurovision.
This song is an anthem not only for Husavik, but for all the small towns around the world, which their inhabitants love regardless of all the challenges that life in a small town brings. Love and a sense of belonging are stronger than anything.
I'm from a mid-sized city and feel this way about it, even! I really love my hometown. I think it's great how so many people all over the world feel the love in this song ♥️
Now I'm definetly crying...my hometown is really not special, with problably 400 people living there, it's not fancy at all. But I would never change it.
Commenting a third time on this video, because this performance is just SO DAMN STUNNING. HOW IN THE HELL DID THE OSCARS PUT THIS ON THEIR PRESHOW? If this was any American artist, it would never stop being shown as a highlight, as one of the greatest Oscar performances of ALL TIME.
@@victoriabennage2190 Its more than that... she has the very rare ability to emote in her phrasing. This is what separates good singers from great singers. Good singers can have perfect pitch and hit every note, but without the ability to emote, it won't "grab the audience by the feels". Take for example "How Do I Live Without You" recorded by both LeAnn Rimes and Trisha Yearwood. Rimes sang in perfect pitch, hit every note. But when compared to Trisha's, it feels bereft of emotion.
Molly Sandén has been famous I Sweden (where she is from) for being a especially strong vocalist, since she was quite young. Extremely talented. She sings in a way that is very popular in a certain type of Swedish pop. Imagine if you had classically trained singers, maybe a bit of musical theatre too, that is pop. But in a lot of ways is quite similar to this song. But I also think Swedish singers have a bit of a free advantage, that Swedish is very suited for singing. Many singers need to work a lot of adjusting their vowel sounds while singing, so they become ones that are more easy to sing. So when speaking and singing the same word, you would need to make different vowel sounds, or you are going to have a very hard time singing. (This is also the reason why even in languages that have a lot of different accents within it. It’s almost always sang the same way, with a few exceptions) But in Swedish this isn’t the case. You can just use the sounds that you are used to using when speaking Swedish and it works great. Most of the Swedish vocal sounds are extremely similar to the sounds that researchers found are the easiest to sing. Where you have a easier time holding a note longer, keep the pitch and without tensing up. And Swedish also is also spoken with a lot of melody compared to most languages. So you use the melody of the sentence to convey what you mean more or less always more then the actual words you use. Norwegian would probably be among the most extreme in the world in its use of melody to convey emotion and intention. English is on the other side of the spectrum, and is spoken extremely monotone, little melody, few pauses or emphasis. And when I speak English because I can’t use melody when speaking, it feels like I lose most of my personality while I’m speaking. It’s to a much higher degree conveyed by what I say then how. Obviously you can still do it in English. But there are a lot less ‘tools’ available. So many Swedish singers also get a little free head start in finding how to convey emotion while singing.
They probably knew if they put this in the actual broadcast, that it would have over shadowed all the other songs. Would have made it not winning even harder.
Lars Erickksong line from the movie was never more true than after this beautiful performance: "The perfect song isn’t the winning song, but a song that comes from the heart” She may not have gotten the award but she walked away a winner! This was absolute perfection!
This song is beautiful, the reason why it did not win it is because it is in a Will Ferrel comedy and the academy thinks everything needs to be ultra serious ultra depressing to be considered “art”. Oscars are so stupid now. Every year I keep expecting them to change, but they don’t.
@@ronbaron4414 No, they may pick mediocre winners most times, but the whole "if it's nominated for an Oscar means it sucks" narrative is just ignorant and overblown, last year they had one of the greatest Best Picture line-ups ever, The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Marriage Story, Joker, Parasite, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, 1917, Ford V Ferrari, Little Women, all of them great movies. Oscars are not an indicator of quality in any way but it's not the opposite either.
I think this is one of the unique performance in the Oscars history. This one song literally brings together the entire town of Husavik. Not to mention the campaigns Husavik people conducted for the Oscar run. I rooted this one will win but it didn't, but however we should greatly appreciate on the Oscar nomination first. Such a deserving song. 👏
A song about a town that is likely 100% White...winning an Oscar? I agree the song should have won hand's down. But everything in Hollywood these days is about being "woke."
This song seriously brought me to tears.. when she started singing in Icelandic, I don't even know what she was saying, but it moved something in me. Thank you
Idk why this category wasn’t just a competition between Husavik, Double Trouble, Volcano Man, In The Mirror, Come and Play, Lion of Love and Jaja Ding Dong.
@@SR-jr5nh lol the song was won was definitely not expected to win. If you bet on the song that won, you would have won a lot of money cause it was the winner with the least likely chance to win
Dont trust it isnt edited in, the fact that they only show it last minute kinda implies to me that it was thrown in tentatively. If it was real it would be featured a lot more, I think.
@@ots1634 I thought this too but a hotel in the town blogged about the performance and said that it was great the northern lights decided to show up for it, so it's real! Very cool!
@@ots1634 you must be not watching it on the day it was streamed. It was live and was the most beautiful performance i’ve ever watched, i literally burst into tears. No way it was edited. The concept that year was different due to the pandemic and they have to do it because of the travel restriction, etc. And still not complaining because no way it can be more beautiful than this.
This is one of the best performances ever. The song, her voice, the location, the background and the adorable choir makes this into an absolute masterpiece. Goosebumps all over!
I am once again commenting on this video to express my sheer wonder and love for this song and performance. Molly Sanden, the visuals, the young ladies singing, the Aurora, the instrumentalists, the fireworks; it's all just absolutely stunning in every way. And it still stuns/disappoints me to realize that the Oscars relegated this to a preshow. If Lady Gaga or some mainstream American artist had composed this song, they would have put this performance in the highest viewership segment of the show, replayed it a dozen times, and would probably still be talking about it two years later.
This song and the images of Husavik made me ball my eyes out....I was standing exactly where she was 2 summers ago....eating fresh cod on the wharf and staying that the Husvik hotel, just to the left of the screen...i have so many fond memories of Husavik and my travels of the entire country of Iceland. Iceland changed me....and it will always be a part of me.
This has to be the most humble heart warming performance of all of these nominations. These little children singing in their town of husavik a small town and they are all probably excited to be at the oscars. That would melt anyone’s heart.
Yeah, and you can really tell how proud and happy they are when Molly turns to them when they sing the chorus together with her. The smiles on their faces in that moment is just the cutest thing ever!
You know, the ironic part is, this song was featured in a movie about a music competition where this small town all of a sudden filled all of Iceland with pride... sadly the song didn't win the price but it won everyone's hearts. The song then gets nominated for a real life award where the very much real town gets to be in the spotlight for real. I imagine a lot of Icelandic tuning in for the award ceremony. Sadly it didn't win the Oscars, but the performance sure did win our hearts yet again.
Which countries national tresure? Sweden's tresure to have Molly the amazing singer? Or Iceland? Or what ever country produced the song and whatever country the production of the movie was in?
I'm 17, Irish and went to Reykjavik in Iceland over Easter on a school trip and it was so beautiful. Also Molly's outfit reminds me of the Northern Lights. So stunning
Here I am just singing about northern lights even when we don't have that here in the Philippines. 😂 Wherever we're from, I think HUSAVIK is our hometown.
Bruh this performance was so fucking cool. - Powerful singer - Good song - Takes place in the actual place that the song is about - A children choir from Husavik (:OOO) - Fireworks!!! (:D) And... ACTUAL REAL NO FUCKING CGI LEGIT AURORA BOREALIS?!?!?!! BRO HOW DID THIS SONG NOT WIN?!?! 😡
@@alchemyst1920 Some weird song that wasn’t even that good, just had that super boring up beat vibes like litterly every single song right now (🙄) and non original (idk y I get those vibes but ye)
Molly Sandén is worth gold and diamonds no matter she was robbed in JESC, Melfest and Oscars. She will have that outstanding voice for life and my unconditional love forever.
I couldn't give two shits about the Oscars, but this was a rip-roaring, mind-blowing performance, and would have been the only redeeming thing about Oscars night. Total champion
I was born and grew up in Indonesia but moved to Scandinavia 7 years ago - been living in both Norway & Sweden … this song has been touching my heart …. Where the mountain sing, seagulls and northern light … i am proud to call it now - My home ❄️🌌
The song from a movie about Eurovision that is actually deeper and more sincere than the majority of real Eurovision songs. EDIT: Whoa, thanks for the likes, I guess I'm not the only one that thinks like this.
Exactly! The way the Russia guy cannot be himself in his home country because he is gay is so sad but sadly true. I’m no Eurovision fan but I liked the movie.
Eurovision was once all about nonstop ballads that were sincere and deep and it was boring and tiring by the end. It still has songs like that and they've won a few years (2016, 2017, 2019, just recently!) but it's not a weakness that many are just fun. It's better entertainment by being variety.
@@occono3543 Eurovision is the most random song consuete ever. From songs from the Crimean genocide to a chicken song of female empowerment and an Italian rock song! Unfortunately there are politics such as voting for neighbours or groups such as balkans or ex-soviet. There are some really good songs though and that’s why I love it.
Watched this movie with my mother in law. I couldn't hold back tears when this song came on, something about it is moving and powerful. I think it brought be me back to simpler times, when people had love for one another and not disdain. Small towns seem to hold onto the comradery that cites lose. One day, maybe we'll be able to find our own "Husavik".
@@terrybaker8156 I mean you can see the Northern lights outside of the arctic circle as well it's just not as common, I live in the south of Sweden and I've seen them a couple of times here. Amazing!
1:39 this shot of the girls is incredible. It's the first time the singer turns back and looks at them, and they are just beaming back at her. I hope she saw that, that was so cute.
I know. Their beaming faces are just the most beautiful thing ever. And I also love it when Molly turns back after looking at them at 2:00 and you can see the little tear in her right eye
Even though my hometown is thousand of miles away from Husavik, in the middle of the desert, this song always make me think of it, drops of tears fall off my eyes. This song is just lovely, and full of heart.
Ok manager...gorgeous face, adorable hairstyle, sings in multiple languages, seems genuinely nice, and a powerhouse voice that could shake the world. But yea...Shaving off 20lbs will be the key to her success. Dumbass
@@t.f.b.h That's disgusting, she is so attractive and talent off the charts. I swear the amount of middle aged managers are so out of touch with society they have no concept of what will sell anymore.
I can't believe she actually hits that note in the end. In the movie, it's obviously a production/computer generated so I didn't think anyone would ever actually sing it yet she does and with so much power too. Absolutely unbelievable.
She's singing in Icelandic! Molly done such a great job here. I don't know how the Oscar can go to anyone other than Molly, Husavik and the songwriters. Wish the UK aired it live.
Oscars go to Woke candidates now.. It's not about actual good movies and songs anymore. A song about a black panther terrorist organization won. Why is anyone surprised.
@@TheQuEeNoNhErThRoNe ooops and no. HER is a great singer song is good don't get me wrong about that. But lets stop selecting in demand just to sympathize color or race.
Not a lot of singers are this talented LIVE. Most mainstream artists lip sing on stage or try too hard and sound like an elephant, but wow, Molly is natural and on a different dimension.
Ohhhhh my godness !!!!! it was so moving with the little Icelandic girls, it moved me to tears! bravo molly and long live sweden and iceland, i love these countries
@@Nazaba09 It's called 'part 1: Molly Sandén going to Husavik' and can be found on her RU-vid channel. There's also a part 2 and 3 of her journey to Husavik for this performance.
The fact that they sing “where the nothern lights burst out in colours” and then the Nothern lights are truly in the background, makes me very very happy
It's just so magical and beautiful. The flawless vocal, the adorable children's choir, the stunning backdrop, the northern lights, the musical crescendo and epic ending. Just WOW.
This makes me feel really emotional! It's absolutely beautiful; everything from the little children in their warm cardis, her dressed in Aurora Borealis, the stirring music, and her stunning voice! It's just perfect! I want to watch the film now ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I've watched and listened to this more times than i care to count. Everytime, it brings me to tears...It should have been Number one at the Oscars ,not the Pre -show.
Instant tears when those kids sang in icelandic. 😢 Didn't get better when Molly chimed in. Simply gorgeous. And gods, how beautiful the icelandic language is. Lots of love from Norway
Everything about this performance was absolutely a masterpiece. the little girls coir, her voice, the place, the fireworks, the northern lights at the very end. So emotional! One of the best Oscars presentations of all time.
Does anyone know who actually won? NO. Because this is the winner of the people, for the people. Never in the history of Oscars has a winning song been so forgotten. Just shows how wrong the jury was. And the real winner is. 🇸🇪Molly Sandén🇸🇪
I just burst into tears. I have never done that in my life. Just the fact that she's singing it there, in the place it's meant to be. I miss my hometown
Greatest, most spine tingling Oscars musical moment since Celine Dion in 1998. Incredible performance and I hope this makes this vocalist a huge global star.
