Known as the "most Hawaiian" of all of the Hawaiian Islands, Molokai is home to less than 7,000 people and the 5th largest of all of the islands. On the island there is only one hotel called Hotel Molokai, the largest town is called Kaunakakai and features two grocery stores, a book store, a couple art galleries, some cafes, a library, various shops and a few places to eat. For being small however there is still so much to see and do.
What to see:
- Visit a plumeria farm
- Visit Purdy's Macadamia nut farm
- Beautiful deserted beaches
- Kalaupapa (home to the Kalaupapa Leprosy (Hansen's Disease) Settlement and National Historic Park
- The highest sea cliffs in the world (as seen in Jurassic Park 3)
What to do:
- Send a beautifully decorated coconut in the mail
- Enjoy a cultural experience and hike to a waterfall in the Halawa Valley with Anakala Pilipo and Greg Solatorio the last remaining descendants of the Halawa Valley.
- Visit the Pu'u O Hoku Ranch
- Stay at Hotel Molokai www.travelyourself.ca/cailins-...
What to EAT:
- Molokai Hot Bread
- Fresh Poi
- Fresh macadamia nuts
- Molokai Burger

I dream of spending some time there in the winter when we retire. What type of accommodations might be available for a couple months besides a hotel?

I hope not too many people ruin the island by too many visits. This Island is sacred and so are it's people. My grandmother was born on this island.

I agree, it is a beautiful destination. I think they are doing a great job so far by limiting the visitors, but some tourism dollars can also help support many people and jobs there.

Hi, Nothing is there. I wouldn't go by yourself. A car rental cost me around 600 and everything is like 40 min away and gas was so expensive. I would travel there for a day and go back.

I am very interesting in spending a couple months in Molokai or another Hawaiian island during Michigan winter when we retire, however as I read comments on some of the videos, I am unsure if we would be welcome. We would love the beauty and serenity, learning about locals and local histiry, however sometimes I get the impression visitors might be unwelcome. Thoughts?

The islands are very different - Oahu and Maui are highly developed while Molokai is the Hawaii of the 1950s. I came from the mainland to attend the U. Of Hawaii in the 1960s during the Vietnam War. People in Hawaii are just like Michiganers- big cities versus small rural towns.

Aloha I understand your wanting to show our beautiful Island, but at what expense. The majority of the people do not want too much exposure because of the repercussions. We like it low key, undeveloped and less tourist, but we can’t have it all
@TravelYourself
@TravelYourself 4 года назад
Thank you for your comment. I understand and I am simply trying to showcase your beautiful island and was brought there by your tourism board to do so. I do not think that is the type of destination to be ruined by tourism and I hope that it won't be.
@AuntJoanieBaloney
@AuntJoanieBaloney 3 года назад
Would a "snow bird" from Michigan be welcome there for a couple of months during the winter? Would there be some type of rental available? Not a "touristy" tourist, but someone who would enjoy the beauty, serenity and local experience.

For any location in Hawaii, and especially on Molokai visitors should be mindful of our culture of aloha. On Molokai, many have adopted a “Give, Spend, Go Home!” slogan, and you’ll see it on signs, posted in the yards of private residences. Others also include “Tourists Not Welcome.” While many of us don’t hold that as law, know that it comes from broken hearts. We love our home dearly. We don’t hate tourists, but we’re not a tourist destination. If you are mindful and can exude aloha to the utmost, or take time to learn our culture- both our Hawaiian culture, and culture of aloha, you’d stand a better chance with locals. Ignorance and carelessness is met the same way, no matter where you go. Albeit, some locals still won’t care, just as some tourists won’t care about the words I say. People are people. Mālama.

Not as it seems. If you do go to the falls. The Only way is with the guide. Otherwise, you lose out on culture and knowledge you will never get any where else. Also, trespassing and the dude that made this possible sued so the family’s insurance is very high. David from Boston
