Thank You for this video, to me it's a shame what most of Hawaii has become since it became a state when I was in the 6th grade. MUCH RESPECT to the people of Molokai for preserving their beautiful island, one can only imagine what the rest of Hawaii was like "back in the day", like when my dad visited a couple times in the 1930s when he was in the navy.

Nice tour of Moloka‘i, we flew to Kahului from the mainland and took Mokolele Airlines over to Moloka‘i for five days in October 2019. We did the awesome tour of Halawa Valley and met Mr. Solatorio prior to going on the hike. We didn't go to Kalaupapa as the trail was washed out at the time. We even drew on a coconut and mailed it from the post office. If you are looking for resorts and fine dining then this island is not for you. Good times, hope to go back again. Mahalo

Thank you, Mel. Though Molokai is ever deep in my heart, I have lived far away for quite a while. This impacts my pronunciation of Hawaiian words and of course, my pigin! So I am constantly having to keep track of updates. And there are a few to track. Not so much pronunciation (but that, too) but new ways of referencing locations and other things. For example, the Big Island is now referred to as Hawaii Island. Thankfully, my brother and his wife live at Kamalo and they keep me on my toes. Too sad the Covid is keeping me away but I would rather keep my distance and be a part of protecting Molokai. Mahalo for your comment.

My Wife and I visited Kalaupapa 15 years ago on an invitation of Fr.Hendrix who was then assigned Priest for the remaining residents of the original leper colony. Many who had the disease did wish to leave the island, remained there till their last days. No longer contagious they prefer the peace that seems to be blanketing the whole area. Fr. Hendrix brought us to St.Philomena Church, no longer used for Masses but used as a museum for visitors. He surprised us by celebrating Mass there for us and our companion which I would guess has not happened in a very long time. We were so moved that at the end we sang the “Salve Regina”. We all then realized that the hymn hasn’t been heard at that Church for a very long time. Upon leaving the Church the surrounding tombstones, that of Fr. Damien, Sr. Marrieanne and the other former residents seemed to exude an overwhelming sense of peace. Difficult to describe because you have to be there to feel it.

It was so nice to to learn about our 50 th state. Your presentation was Excellent with maps . It’s kind of sad That cliffs separate easy exploration all around the island and in the ocean. Not many people talk about going in the water except at good beaches. Are there coral reefs around the islands?
@sory4beinanonymous
@sory4beinanonymous 2 года назад
Hawai’i is not the 50th state. They were never served a treaty and the UN actually recognizes us as a sovereign nation. Think of the cliffs as a blessing. If they didn’t prevent exploration then Molokai would be overrun with tourism like Oahu
@kalanimondoy4564
@kalanimondoy4564 2 года назад
Coral reef aligns the southern shore of Molokai. Cliffs are not a hinderance for exploration nor should our home as it was for our ancestors be open to your "exploration" or your fantasy island.
@prindiflug4373
@prindiflug4373 Год назад
No sadness here about the sea cliffs of Molokai. They have protected the holy beauty of the northern coast of the island for millennia. Hawaii, to the rest of the world is the 50th state, but to many, it is a sovereign nation whose land was wrested from them by foreigners. Now, these two opposite realities live tenuously at the same time. Moving forward we endeavor to respect all people but especially the realities of native Hawaiians. The resistance to excessive tourism is part of fostering an environment conducive to protecting native ways. Those who visit should come with an attitude of humility and a desire to learn about and appreciate Hawaiian culture.

I enjoyed the video until the part where you said it was King Lot Kamehameha V who "banished" Hawaiian lepers to Kalaupapa. 1. Hawaiians did not have diseases before the white man came and brought diseases that killed hundreds of thousands of Maoli Kanaka, some say more than a million Maoli Kanaka. 2. During King Lot's reign there was a change in government and a new "Constitution" was written and a New Legislature was in place. Lot's foreign minister was French, many other's in his cabinet were "Foreigners." The King was not solely responsible for banishing leprosy to Kalaupapa and Maoli Kanaka still didn't understand anything about these NEW DISEASES after centuries of not having any at all so they did what they thought was best. If the USA or the State of Hawaii thought "banishing lepers" is so awful they should've changed that law much sooner than 1969 don't you think? The 5-6 people who are still there say they choose to be there, it's their home and they love that place. I saw them being interviewed at Kalaupapa.. very beautiful place.. I think "everyone" simply felt that they needed to confine this disease that didn't have a cure, especially after most of their family members had already died from diseases a generation or two before them. It hasn't been that long since the law changed and we're allowed to teach olelo in the department of education, and we never should have had to be FORCED to STOP SPEAKING OUR LANGUAGE or Get BEATINGS. I just wanted to let people know what "really happened to our ancestors in the Hawaiian Kingdom." If anyone wants to know the truth about Hawaii they can go to hawaiiankingdom.org www.hawaiiankingdom.org/

The suffering Hawaiians endured at the hands of foreigners, whether intentional or unintentional, was inexcusable. I appreciate your input. very helpful to broaden my understanding and inform my and my children’s future on Molokai. Mahalo.

I've been to every Hawaiian island over the past 26 years and Molokai is the most boring, desolate desert island I've seen. Most of that shitty island is a barren wasteland which only has a pocket of beautiful scenery on its eastern, windward, remote tip. And even that can't compare to the other islands' windward scenery. Sorry, but a barren rock like Molokai isn't worth anyone's time. It sucks in every way. I hated that ugly island.
