Bailey Edwards I never got it either until I had my own daughter. It's just kind of another little sign of how quickly your beloved child is growing up. Another incredible milestone, even though it's a bit of a miserable one. 😊❤
Bailey Edwards Not my mom. She was uncomfortable, so I was uncomfortable; she told me, "Don't let a boy play with you down there, or else you'll get pregnant." Verbatim, those were her exact words. 😑 She _did_ tell me about belts, what a pain they were, and luckily, we have Stayfree with adhesive now. (I was 11; this was 1978) She also told me that the earlier ya start, the later ya go, which is bs; a woman is done when her ovaries are empty. Can't tell when that'll be, but what my mom said is a false old wive's tale. 😊
this is so heart warming. my family was also very supportive of me when i had my first period. my mom taught me how to use the pads and my dad got me a bracelet as a memento of me growing up. "you're a women now" they said. i remember it was around christmas and very cold. but my mom prepared warm drinks for me every day. I've experienced almost a hundred menstruation cycles now. in fact im experiencing one right now. i'll always remember the first time. so full of love. i feel blessed thinking about those memories. 💛
A lot of people are surprised at how frank and even borderline graphic these educational videos are. There are a lot of stereotypes about prudish taboos from the 1950s and 1960s, but they're not very well-founded. We knew about these things and talked about them as necessary ... it's just that it's seldom necessary, and when it is, it can be done in private!
Golly! Awful belts with metal clips that dig in! No maxi-pads. Dry, huge tampons that hurt like hell to get in. No magic bullet Motrin. I'm 64 and all those myths about not swimming, etc., still applied. We called it "the cardinal," "the friend," and yes, "the curse." Often we just said: " Damn! I have my effing period! This was the 60s and 70s!!!
I remember one lady talking about the change over from belts to glue. She said that you could go dancing again, and everything was fine, until it started to peel...you never forget the feeling you had the first time glue hit punani.
Tish Lynn ikr Such misinformation 60+ years ago! We 'catch' a cold from the cold virus! Granted, if one's immune system is fighting a virus (or other infection), and his/ her body temp is extremely hot or cold, the immune system has a more difficult time fighting the infection, and one won't feel well. But periods have nothing to do with it. If it's warm enough to swim, and one is comfortable with tampons, go for it!
@@strivingformindfulness2356 It was probably scandalous and taboo to use a tampon back then if you were unmarried or had no children. After all, we gotta protect your innocence and keep you away from temptation! Remember girls: There is nothing interesting to see or explore down there. No reason at all for you to know as much about your genitals as the boys do! In fact, you don't even have to worry about having a proper word to describe that part of yourself until maybe you're in your mid to late teens (if you're lucky).
It amazes me how we've been taught so many negative things about the 1950s and how "backwards" and "anti-woman" it was. But after watching all these videos and doing so much reading from the time, they were so mature and easy going about everything! Men were masculine but that included having integrity, being gentle, telling the truth, and taking care of his responsibilities. Women were house wives, sure, but it was taboo for them not to go to college or to get married too young, and many women worked, especially in the beginning of marriages in order to save money for the things they would need for the life they were starting together. We aren't better off now! People were sooo much happier then, whereas now, people are depressed and have no sense of community or direction in life. I would have loved to come of age in the 50s.
AND MANY WOMEN QUIT THEIR JOBS AFTER GETTING MARRIED, AND QUIT THEIR JOBS IF THEY BECAME PREGNANT WHILE WORKING & HUSBANDS COULD ASK THEIR WIVES TO STAY AT HOME😠 THAT WAY THE WIVES WOULDN'T SEE WHAT THEWERE REALLY DOING😂😂😂
“Why you’re growing like a weed. Better let that hem line down. We wouldn’t want you looking like a street walker, flashing your knees for the whole world to see!” 😅🤭
Aw man, I wish my mom had been this cool about it. She showed me how to use the pad and then immediately called all our relatives telling them “Sarah is a woman now” 🤣
OMG I love this! 💕 Figured it would be shame-laden and invasive with an emphasis on a need to conceal it from men at all cost! Love how Mom didn’t encourage her to call it “the curse.” Mom even asked for permission before discussing it with Dad! Fascinating about the need to sit up straight and avoid swimming though… Wonder when they were disproven?
I can't believe they used to call the children back then girls/boys or young lady/young woman/young man. Such a horrific and terribly normal and sane time in the history of the world. 😐😐
My God... I wish I could be a parent like mine were... I am TERRIFIED of talking of such things... my daughter is only 7, but I dread having to talk about this...
AWWW WHAT INNOCENCE😇 IM SURE YOU HAD NO PROBLEM SPREADING YOUR LEGS & FUCKING🤣 WOMEN KILL ME WITH THAT STUPID SHIT, EITHER YOU TALK TO HER OR THE STREETS WILL TEACH HER & YOU WILL BE GRAMA
More progressive and enlightened than expected for the time. The teacher in my mother's class instructed girls not to tell males of any age when they had The Curse, because it might upset them if they heard that girls bleed.
Lol! Oh those were the days! I remember them well! We girls prayed for "it" to start. We felt that when "it" started, 'it" was the start of our woman- hood blossoming. But when "it" did start tho, we were just mostly embarrassed! Lol. (Especially in public) The same with a training bra! Ha ha. These youngings today have it all! All the fancy things and so many choices! And they still want to complain! Jeesh! SMH, They should've lived through what we oldies had to live through. Maybe then they'd be more grateful! Lol. Also wondering... Any you oldies remember any of those "for girls only" health classes "your body is changing" movies? Wanna talk about miss information! OMG! 😨😱😷Lol.
I don't know how we survived the pain from those cramps. We girls were tough in the 70s. I don't even remember Advil then, but we got through it. My mom wasn't approached the right way, so she didn't know how with me.
Excert from Rational Wiki - If you attended high school anytime before the sexual revolution of the 60's and 70's you were likely to hear any number of myths about "The Curse" and what you should do during it. Do not wash your hair while on menses; it will make you go bald. Do not bathe until the last day of your menses; you will get dry skin. Do not swim; your body cannot handle the pressure. Dental fillings will fall out (yes, dentists would routinely ask women if it was "those days"). Do not have sex during your period. You can get any number of horrors, from diseases to muscle weakness. Do not exercise during your period. 1) you are too weak, and 2) it will make you BUTCH.[8] There's also a popular tale that women who live together eventually find their periods synching up.[9]
Back then? Molly’s options were likely: A) Being sent to (hidden away) a home for unwed mothers until she has the baby then gives it up for adoption. B) Being hidden again, but having her parents adopt the baby & raise it as their own. The kid would think Molly was his/her sister. C) Depending on Molly’s age at the time, talking to a friend, who has a friend, who knows a guy who could perform a dangerous back alley abortion that could potentially kill Molly or cause internal injuries that permanently sterilize her. Kind of puts a whole new, dark spin on the “Happy Days” version of the 1950’s! Lol
I got my first period when I was staying at my dad's and I had no idea what was going on with my body i was super scared... my mom had never talked to me about it lol i was so confused and afraid of telling my dad what was happening lmao
Wait.... so the massive amounts of blood loss makes you more susceptible to getting chills and sick?? 🤔 omg I've had girlfriends that went swimming during their periods, if only they knew how dangerous it was. 😨
SweetIvory 1203 Have fun when your husband is a perfect gentleman, until you don't have dinner ready when he gets home so he decides to put a bullet in the back of your head 😂 (not saying domestic-violence doesn't happen now, we just don't hear about all the crazy crap that used to go on, unless it's from your rickety-old grandmother like in my case). Us women need to keep a good perspective on how good we have it now, and stand firm enough that it can only get better.
Was that reality? Lolol! Where is the part where she screams at everyone? And her cramps turn her into an evil bitch? Mommm!! I don't like everyone knowing my business!!! Lolol! How could life have been so perfect? Barf, lol!
i wish my first time was like this my mom only hinted at the monthly torture and you think shes just playing around about cramps i think by my 3rd period i was begging for my mom to take it back lol
